That wasn't my favorite National set, but they did sound great and I had a lot of fun. Great seeing a bunch of you all, as always.

Young Guv were some pretty solid power pop in the vein of Teenage Fanclub. I feel like ten15 would dig them. Tony Molina was pretty dang fantastic for a guy that either doesn't know how to or just plain refuses to write a bridge. If you like the Mats, the Byrds, Dino Jr, Queen, and one verse and one chorus with some Thin Lizzy close harmony guitar solos he's your guy. It's been a while since I saw a set and thought "oh shit, this is dangerous" so thank you for that Culture Abuse. Tony Molina was so good. Left of the dial cover with dual thin lizzy leads was so good. Culture Abuse were fun as heck too and I was in the back out of harms way. Young Guv were great and the two hxc openers were completely different and really fun too. Good vibes

I agree, not the best set I've seen by them, but an average National show is better than most band's best day. I'll still see whatever the next show is they do here since I'm sure they will significantly chanhe the setlist by that point

Good vibes Bf had been saying how he hates a sold out summer show at Subt (who doesn't) and when we got there it was already sold out but the door guy was like "well for the right price it's not sold out" so I think we each gave him $20 and it was quite sweaty but bf surprised me by wanting to be up in the thick of it (I think we ended up just a little in front of you in the center on the edge of the pit but got pushed back as the show went on).

The National show was really great. The new songs sounded very good, and a couple were highlights of the show for me (especially "Not in Kansas").
A+ free show

I enjoyed The National, though I agree with those saying it wasn’t their best show. I think they lost a lot of the crowd early by front loading the new album. I was a little worried we wouldn’t get a full encore but they clearly gave no fucks about curfew so that was cool.

Bon Iver was good but the last 30 minutes of the Chicago set after 10 hours of drinking was out of control

Flipper with David Yow last night was a really good time. The finale was 'Sex Bomb' - sans sax player - with about 20 audience members up on stage dancing, and the mic being passed around for people to scream, "SEX BOMB BABY YEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!" It was pretty funny.
There were 3 opening bands, and they were surprisingly all pretty good too. One of them was Porcupine, which had ex-Husker Du member Greg Norton on bass.

Saturday turned out to be pretty great at Metro. I can’t remember if I’ve seen Cloakroom before, but they were a pretty great start to the show. Young Widows ripped, they had a great sound and some huge riffs. And then Pelican were pretty good as usual. I ended up leaving after about 45 minutes of their set since I was wiped out, but that was a solid night.

Had a nice run of shows from June 19-29:
Jason Isbell's Celebrate Brooklyn show at the Prospect Park Bandshell was great as usual. Amanda Shires was there - we've been lucky in that there's only one Isbell show we've seen without her over the past several years. I know pretty much everyone here is all in on FJM, but I remain unconvinced.
Drive-By Truckers' first night (of six) at Brooklyn Bowl was very good. Craig Finn opened and while I didn't recognize any of the material, it sounded fine. I bought my ticket at a discount on StubHub and the venue was maybe 2/3rds full. Six nights may have been a little too ambitious. It was great to be able to go back to the bar for a beer and reclaim my rail spot, though.
I generally don't care for Iron & Wine, but his show with Calexico at the Bandshell was superb! The weather was damn near perfect, too. Somehow I think I've maybe only seen Calexico once before.
Never been into Tortoise, either, but they performed TNT at the bandshell the following night and it was very enjoyable. Emily Wells opened and had a string section backing her up which was cool.
I kept wavering back and forth trying to decide whether I'd go to Yo La Tengo at Out of Space after having flown in that afternoon. Brought an emergency poncho and stood in the rain for 45 minutes between sets, but it was well worth the effort. Fully expected Rick Rizzo to join them as he was loitering side stage with Jon Langford, but instead it was Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey who came out for the encore which included a rousing rendition of "19th Nervous Breakdown".
Splurged on an excellent field level seat for the Stones at Soldier Field. Also bit the bullet for parking in the SW Facilities lot which proved to be totally worth it when I made it back to the hotel in Schaumburg before midnight. I absolutely loved the set list. So great to hear "Bitch", "Play With Fire", "Sweet Virginia" and "Slipping Away". Totally agree with rango that it felt like a rock show and not a Broadway production. I have to wonder if Keef was trying to slip past "Paint It Black" when he launched into "Midnight Rambler", but Mick didn't let him. Whiskey Myers opening was a major WTF, though.
The Industry City "venue" (it's a temporary stage in a courtyard between two of the buildings) is quite nice. I missed Screaming Females and only got to see about 2/3rds of Swearin' when I had to leave early to meet Mrs. Doso at an urgent care facility. (She's okay). I liked what I heard from Swearin' though.
Liz Phair was at the bandshell on Saturday night and she was excellent. As expected, she played pretty much the same set as the last time we saw her, but she did call an audible in the middle of the show and did a couple of extra tunes with her lead guitarist including "Explain It to Me". Ted Leo and the Pharmacists opened and killed. He also joined Liz during her set and they sang "Fuck & Run" as a duet.
Needless to say, I'm a little pooped (but very happy).

Body's/Beach In Life are so good live

Carly Rae Jepsen was so damn fun. She has a full band with backup singers, plus a great stage setup. She even does wardrobe changes flawlessly. Sounded terrific throughout. The crowd at the show tonight was A+.

fitzgerald's american music festival was so fuckin fun yesterday. sarah shook & the disarmers and robbie fulks & redd volkaert (merle haggard's old guitarist) were two of the best sets i've seen all year, and the vibe and setup outside fitzgerald's is so cool. jd mcpherson and the old nola jazz band i saw were fun too, along with the couple bluegrass groups. unfortunately i had to drive home and was up early yesterday so couldn't make it long enough to see waco brothers at midnight.
also worth noting that the cajun bbq food they have is incredible. had the cochon de lait roast pork po' boy early and the andouille sausage late, both very very tasty and pretty cheap.
definitely want to go back to the fest next year.

Caught about half an hour of Chris Robinson, his solo stuff is so weak compared to TBC. The irony of him calling his band Chris Robinson Brotherhood despite his inability to get along with his actual brother well enough to play in his much more successful and lucrative band is not lost on me.
That was Jesus Jones' first US show in 17 years, they looked and sounded very good. Kudos to Summerfest for bringing them across the pond, excellent booking.
The people watching at Summerfest is worth the price of admission alone (we bought tickets off a scalper for $10). I would love to get data on the percentage of men wearing jorts or cargo shorts, and the total amount of ranch consumed.

Saw Garbage tonight here in Rome. They played next to a lake (actually, the part of the park with the stage was surrounded by the lake) in a gorgeous park, Villa Ada. Maybe one of the most beautiful settings for a show that I've experienced. The band sounded great, and the crowd was great.
It's so fucking hot and humid in this country right now, though.

the bill callahan show last night was really great. first time seeing him with a band, live versions of the new songs were amazing and expansive. loved the apocalypse and smog tracks too.
bill brought haley from circuit des yeux out to do a brief tribute to joao gilberto which was nice too. he also had bill mackay (who opened with a really nice set) and his keyboardist join the callaband for an extended jam on "the beast" which was a very good vibe.

Priests were great, as usual. It ended up filling in a little bit more which was good. They only did about 50 minutes and wrapped by 10 which is good and bad. Bad bc we didn't get Nothing Feels Natural or anything from Bodies, but good bc I'm old.
Some of the newer stuff came off odd live tho, like the Seduction of Kansas was off. But Clean and 68 Screen were awesome as was Good Time Charlie. Not better than the last two times I've seen them but still a very good show.
