I didn't think it was loud. Was glad to catch the back half of Swearin' or however much it was. A friend of mine had to leave Mike Krol because of the strobes?? I am also very much in favor of weeknight shows that end at 9:22.

Joey Bada$$/Flatbush Zombies/Beast Coast was insanely fun and super well put together. Sets flowed naturally from one to the next with artists performing their featured tracks together as the segue between two sets. There was a group of 5 openers that essentially handed each other off this way, 15 minutes of DJ work, and then 2 full hours of some Beast Coast songs, Joey for a few tracks, Flatbush for a few, back and forth a bit until they ended with everyone on stage. Great fun, crowd was super into it. Maybe 15-20 minutes too long in the grand scheme of things but a total party. Full price tickets were $70 after fees, and going for the low price of free was very much worth it.

Glad you had fun! My buddy was at the Aragon show on Weds, looked like a good time.
Re: The free tickets, did you enter their web contest for Beast Coast? The Rave is pretty generous with giveaways and BOGOs for undersold shows. In the past they used to send a street team down to Chicago to give away tickets to shows outside of Chicago venues as concerts were letting out. Mailing tickets to people who actually entered a contest sounds much more practical however.

I didn’t enter a contest or anything. On Monday I went to get my mail and there was a little slip that had some sort of generic “because you liked previous shows...” and there were 4 tickets to the show tucked in there. Kinda wild because I had only briefly had the thought I wanted to go and had never vocalized it. Perhaps they saw me go to look at tickets, see the price tag, and change my mind. The only other show I’ve seen there is Vince Staples, which was BOGO, and they required me to provide an address to mail them to. Last night they were handing out free tickets to shows there next weekend so if there’s anyone here who wants to see Kevin Gates let me know and the two tickets are yours lmao.

Ha! That's awesome. Yeah it must have been because you bought the BOGO Vince tickets. Glad to hear they're still handing out tickets by the boatload.

They send tickets all the time without rhyme or reason if you go to shows there every so often. I got four for Pennywise earlier this week that promptly went in the trash.

For how undersold it supposedly was it never really felt empty. Also I’m pretty sure more than 50% of the people there had a Flatbush Zombie tattoo of some kind. Pretty insane how dedicated their fan base is.

1060 Block Party was pretty fun yesterday, although they had a smaller turnout than I was expecting for a free fest that booked real bands. They clearly supplemented the cost of the talent by charging $10 a beer and selling overpriced food, but I guess that's fair. It sounds like it's going to be an annual thing, but they also just posted a cryptic "see you soon" message on IG with the sideways eyes emoji, so maybe they're doing another fest in the fall?

i saw ted leo at the top note last night. they were filming it for what i can only assume is an episode of Storytellers. he played two hours and at least a half-hour of that was chatting. the guy sitting behind me laughed at everything he said and replied whenever even remotely fitting. but i was glad to hear some songs i haven't heard in a while, and a few new ones.
also, i was completely unaware of his kickstarter fiasco and the vitriol over it. i read a little bit about it after getting home. also, he really does not like the national.

Also curious about why he hates the national i read this: www.kickstarter.com/ projects/98880859/new-ted-leo-album/comments and then searched twitter and found a lot more comments. it's basically that he did a kickstarter for an album and it funded $165k with deliveries noted for september 2017. a lot of people still haven't received anything. he talked briefly last night that he had trouble getting some of the packaging done properly. but it seems like a bit more than that.

I had a ticket to see Ted last night. Completely forgot about it until I checked my email after I got home from Psycho Las Vegas yesterday evening and saw the email describing the details. I would have had to leave immediately and was like, "Uhh...."
Sorry to have missed it. Will have to catch the filmed version I guess.

Flying Lotus started off a little slow but then totally ramped it up after the first 15-20 minutes. He was clearly having a great time and the visuals were pretty neat

Pkew Pkew Pkew are a perfect band to kick off a day of Riot Fest. They cranked through their whole set and barely stopped to tune between songs. Sounded pretty great too.
Hold Steady put on a typically great show. I was very happy to get both Weekenders and Hurricane J in the same set for once, it's been a while since they played both in the same show I was at. New songs were fine, none really stood out so far. They did a Pkewx3 cover at the end too, since Craig apparently loves that band, so that was pretty cool.
I will say that for having a pretty fervent fan base, the crowd was pretty good. You would expect more assholes in the crowd, but that wasn't the case where I was.

Indian was so fucking loud and beyond perfect. again. Canyon of the Skull was cool for what they were too!
having a Dark Lord tapping for this event probably helped draw a lot of people in I'm sure but they all left the minute the Dark Lord keg kicked so it was kinda silly to have an overcrowded house for like 20 minutes lol (especially for what is not even their best stout)
ended up following the ticos over to beat kitchen. Closet Witch was fucking sick. highly recommend.
Meth. ... clearly did not know what they are. 3 members were dressed for a funeral, 2 were in corpsepaint and robes, one was playing to his amp like Dragged into Sunlight, and the singer was in red and white Gerard Way attire. kinda went everywhere between nu metal and hardcore to this bizarre drone piece that lasted way too long and then they just kinda seemed to give up. idk weird set.
fun night! am dead now. dunno how I'm gonna do 2 more nights of free shows

Sounds like I’m glad we didn’t stay for Meth.! Closet Witch were awesome, as was Indian despite the technical difficulties. Can’t ask for too much more from a free show.
Was also dead and just woke up a few minutes ago.

Converge were fucking great and had a real rowdy crowd. good times
Cloud Nothings sounded good but i feel like they should play more songs and stop do those "noise jams" for 10 minutes so often cause i think they only played 4 or 5 songs total.

Bryan Ferry continues to be one suave motherfucker and his band is excellent. Maybe my favorite show of the year so far.

Vampire Weekend was a ton of fun last night. Only played 2 hours flat because it was an outdoor venue with a noise curfew. But they squeezed in an abbreviated Hannah Hunt on request before closing with Walcott which made me happy. They brought a guy from the crowd who was holding an "i can play A-Punk" sign on stage to play A-Punk with them. He flubbed the intro the first time but managed after that, crowd ate it up. Atmosphere was great - maybe the most consistently engaged I've seen a crowd during a big-ish seated show, though I don't go to too many. Not many sitters.

Flying Lotus was so fun! My girlfriend who didn't really know anything about him might've enjoyed it more than I did, I was surprised. Thought the 3D would be cheesy but it wasn't at all. Hannibal Buress surprised everyone and did some stand up for like 20ish minutes. Also, normally I don't show up for openers unless I know who they are, but the openers for this tour are really fun, recommend going early to see them too if you have tickets to see him in the future. First time at the Vic, wasn't really a fan.
King Gizzard wasn't officially sold out but it definitely felt like it was. I liked Fishing For Fishies a little bit more than Infest The Rats Nest (nothing against rats nest, still a great album) so I was happy they played more songs from Fishies. Overall the setlist was awesome too, all my favorite songs they didn't play I've seen them play before so I wasn't upset. It's so weird that less than three years ago I was seeing them in a venue with maybe 200 people and now they're close to selling out the Aragon, pretty wild. Didn't expect them to get that big

i went to see alex lahey last night. she took a while to get going, but it was a fun show. her guitar player had the enthusiasm of franz ferdinand's bass player, but everyone else looked like they enjoyed playing music in a band.
through three songs, i was 100% convinced the opener was covering deep cut 80s songs that i didn't know. it sounded pretty good. she's got a knack for new wave. but she grated on my nerves like few do. the teen open mic level banter was plenty and brutal. the stadium show rockstar moves were a little over the top. then this morning i looked her up and found she's from orlando, so a lot made sense then.

We saw Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at Schubas on Monday and they were a ton better than I expected at this point. Nice, varied setlist, good banter/energy, sounded great, and a fun crowd to boot. I feel like I've seen them more recently than 2007, but can't remember when that would have been. Glad we went.

Orange Goblin ruled. really surprised by a lot of the setlist but in the best way possible. sucks that there were like 40 people there total but i honestly will never understand who booked them for Thalia or why. such an odd booking.
Weedeater was great and hysterical as always. pretty standard set.
The Skull got better as they went along but honestly the first song or two sounded like no one had rehearsed in...ever? like they didnt know how their own songs started and just kinda fumbled through it. the ending was cool but trying to be a jam band on your last song as the first band of 3 at a poorly attended metal show is...a choice.
still really fun night!

I should have gone to that instead of playing softball. I ended up pulling a dang muscle and we got destroyed. Would've had much more fun elsewhere.
