I went to a concert last night! It was a repeat of this one. Dark Star Orchestra sounded great- I wasn't expecting a bunch of hacks up there, but the musicianship was better than I thought it'd be and it ended up being a really nice time. 1st setlist was much better than the 2nd one I thought- 2nd wasn't bad, just weird. Lots of families there too and we parked next to a Tesla. Security didn't even check to see we brought a full cooler of beers in and one security guy walking through the crowd gave me a thumbs up as I smoked a joint. Fun times! Don't think I'd do it again though, mainly because an actual concert in a venue is next on my agenda I think. Wow, I'm not familiar with the OG show, but I want to check it out now. Love the idea of that oddball Help > Slip progression

Even my friend, who is easily the biggest dead fan I know in my age bracket, couldn't figure out what they were doing for a while. It worked out fine in the end!

the two worst songs the dead ever covered are hag's mama tried and marty robbins' el paso, and you got the latter. I like just about everything else Hag ever wrote or sang, but I can't stand anything from Robbins' oevre.

I really like the run of the beginning of that second set but I imagine even with a cover band that does a good job of capturing the essence of the original you need a little bit of that extra dead magic to make it really work

I went to a Dead show once when I was like 17. Bought some bunk shrooms. It was awful.

Second Billy Strings show of the year last night and it far outshone the first one. Just straight fire through the first set and a super fun second set. We had a dope pod right up front and you can see me in the official photos lol. Danced (and sweated) my whole ass off. There were no rules and no masks at Wintrust Field (except on staff) and they gave zero shits if you stayed in your pod or danced up to the front.
Only bummer was no Dead covers (or any non-trad covers at all) and I already sold my tickets for tonight for a multiplicity of not great reasons. Welp.

Buddy of mine just saw Billy down in Columbia. He's a big fan. I watched some vids. Impressive musician, no doubt!

Didn't realize this show was last night, I was going to ask you to see if the little pretzel stand they have at the ball games was there for the concerts too. Those are the BEST.

went to see dirty honey last night. they’re a young rock band that’s got some catchy hooky songs - kind of an aerosmith/stones/black crowes vibe to them. nowhere near that talent, though, but good enough for a $25 night out. felt weird but good to be so close to 3-400 unmasked people all enjoying the show. still may take a while to get used to being normal again!

Steve Earle played a solo acoustic show in the courtyard of one of our favorite restaurants in Brooklyn last night. Wasn’t cheap, but it was a nice way to ease back into live music (my first show since Drive-By Truckers on Feb. 21, 2020). I love that he played a lot of songs from Guitar Town, Exit 0 and Train A Comin’.
Bonus: we attended with thatfarmgirl from the old ACL board. First friend I’ve hugged in a long fuckin time.

Had my brain fucking exploded at the first night of Yonatan Gat's residency at the Sultan Room in Bushwick. He performed with Innov Gnawa, Jaime Branch, the bassist from Swans, and Cinque Kemp, one of the most ferocious drummers I've ever seen. Hard to describe the show. Basically two continuous hours of deep fried grooves, psychedelic noise jazz, Moroccan jam rock - I don't even know. My mind was blown. Oh yea, and William Parker opened the show too with a half hour of incredible bass explorations. Here's some pics via Jesse Jarnow:

i saw living colour last night at a casino’s food truck festival for $5. it was part of the summerland package tour with everclear, etc. but i only stayed for living colour. they only got 35 minutes and played 7 songs but they were fantastic - so tight and sounded great! and got to meet corey glover after the show. best $5 i’ve spent in a long time ;-)

It was great to be back at the Bottle last night. Ganser sounded great, their new songs were pretty good live too. These limited capacity shows meant it was probably about 60% of the usual max, it was fairly full but wasn't packed.
It was great that Nadia chewed out some dude in the front two rows who thought it was a good idea to smoke a cigarette or something during this set. They also had horn players from Cheer Accident do one song from their new album with them too.
The Bottle is a little different now, that middle spot where the arcade games and water used to be is wide open now, bathrooms were redone there too.

And I know it's supposed to be safe to not wear a mask, but I still wore mine during the show. Yeah, I was the only one pretty much, but I'll pretty much be doing that until my son can get vaccinated.
But I found that's a pretty great way to keep people from standing right next to you during shows now.

I would totally wear a mask to shows if it meant other people kept away from me.

Went to the record release show at Sleeping Village for Wild Earp and the Free for Alls.
Really great country band. A few songs on their new album are legit fantastic. Bought the CD and have been listening repeatedly.

Saw Billy & the Kids with Billy Strings last night. Great time, bf's first Red Rocks show, he got a kick out of it. Billy was playing a guitar his grandpa had made in prison in the sixties (??) and it surprisingly sounded pretty good! I don't love the other vocalists with the Kids, but Billy absolutely slayed on "So Many Roads" and "Thunder" which I believe is his composition/Robert Hunter lyrics. Covers of "Positively 4th Street" and "Back on the Train" were well received, and a raucous "US Blues" closed out the evening. Good times and old heads all around. Setlist here: www.setlist.fm/setlist/billy-and-the-kids/2021/red-rocks-amphitheatre-morrison-co-3b8ff8a0.html

Sheer Mag slayed last night! Saw them at TV Eye, a new-ish venue in Ridgewood that was very cool! Got good vibes from the place, the sound was great, and I appreciated that there were three separate bar areas for folks who are more interested in talking then seeing the show.
First time seeing Sheer Mag and they were completely on-point throughout. Tina is a force to be reckoned with - instantly became one of my favorite live vocalists. And their guitarists were shredding throughout. Biggest crowd reaction was for "Expect the Bayonet" which I loved. Opener Brower was super fun too! They were channeling some serious glam rock w/ harmonized Thin Lizzy guitars. Lots of falsetto, lots of charisma, lots of fun. Would check them out again.

i'm gonna go a little long today since it's been almost 16 months since i've had a reason to post in this thread on saturday night, i heard an ad on the radio for a show happening sunday at crossroads, an outdoor venue downtown, attached to a pizza place. the bill: SUMMERLAND with everclear / hoobastank / living colour / wheatus. my fiance was out of town and none of my friends were available, but i decided to go anyway. i loved everclear when i was a kid. scored a ticket for about half price online and made my way down to the venue for $3 hamms and some bands from my jr high ipod. spent the day listening to hoobastank and trying to memorize all of the words to "the reason" i tried to make it for the very end of wheatus's set so i could hear "teenage dirtbag", but i could hear it echoing through town as i walked toward the venue gates. sounded surprisingly good. my main mission at this point was to find and purchase a hoobastank tshirt. i cannot imagine wearing anything funnier. they did NOT have this shirt for sale, meaning i left the concert with $30 extra dollars in my pocket two hamms later, living colour is about to go on and i'm only a few people back from the stage. as soon as they come out, i'm smiling ear-to-ear, just in a pure daze to be watching a band again. feeling the drums, the volume, being in a crowd of people...it felt incredible. they also KICKED ASS. every single song absolutely slapped. there was a younger kid there with her mom who clearly did not know living colour but was wide-eyed and jaw dropped at how great they sounded, which was really cool to see candidly. when i was about her age i used to steal my dad's cd copy of the "say anything" soundtrack and listen to "cult of personality" on repeat. up comes hoobastank, and they want to go hard. alright! singer walks out with a KC royals jersey that says "HOOBASTANK" on the back which draws....recognition, though not the uproarious reaction intended. a couple guys behind me had been talking during the entire set break about how pumped they were for hoobastank. they looked to be about my age and had a twist of sarcasm and rowdiness to them that made me think they were just goofing off. lo and behold, hooba starts to stank and they are ridiculously into it, like jumping up and down and singing along. i spark up and offer some to them, and one of them asks if i'd like a sip of his beer in exchange (politely declined). as its going around, another one of them leans toward me and says "i've got......" but i can't make out the rest of what he's saying because the music is too loud. i figure its drug-related so i prioritize, and lean in closer. he shouts, "i've got a lot of tears to cry for 'the reason'" by the time everclear came out i'd truly had my share of fun and didn't really need any more fulfillment from them. which was good, because although it was a nice nostalgia trip to hear art alexakis's voice, they've definitely (and understandably) grown out of the fun young angst of their records. thought one last time about buying a hoobastank tshirt on the way out and balked again. i've tried about a hundred things - consciously, and subconsciously - to replicate the feeling i had that night over the past 16 months. the longer the drought went on, the more i convinced myself i was doing a good job filling the void. i walked out of that show on sunday with the simple realization that nothing else really works. it was like i'd just been to church. and the preacher was hoobastank.

i went to that summerland tour over a week ago and only saw living colour and they were fan-fucking-tastic. i didn't care to see the others (did see wheatus play teenage dirtbag, though) but yeah there's no substitute for real live music... you can't get that feeling from a tv screen.

Didn’t get One Step Behind (obvs the best GP track), but they played a bunch from Natural Facts, which was great. Total Yang as a set closer kicks ass. Excited to hopefully see this band between 3-5 more times before the year ends!
