ias its going around, another one of them leans toward me and says "i've got......" but i can't make out the rest of what he's saying because the music is too loud. i figure its drug-related so i prioritize, and lean in closer. he shouts, "i've got a lot of tears to cry for 'the reason'" This might be the best few sentences of any review in this thread

The Popes put on a great, albeit short set. They played some, but not all of the hits, time constraints clearly played a factor. I'm back home just after 8:30 and I couldn't ask for a better return to live music.

Also, Scott Lucas was to my left for most of the Popes set.

orville peck last night was my first show in 522 days. that's my longest gap without live music since i started going to shows. anyway, thalia hall "strongly encouraged" mask-wearing. most people didn't go for that. there wasn't even a question between my partner and i that we would wear masks. we were a little disappointed at how few people were masked up and acting like everything was back to normal. two feet between me and the guy in front of me? pixie girls swoop right in. can't hear what your friend is saying during the middle of the show? yell a little louder during a song.
there's something that bugs me about his music i can't quite put my finger on. on paper, it's something i'd really like. in execution, it just doesn't hit that high level. but despite whatever it is, i enjoyed his show. he's very charismatic. he's a good performer. he played what i expected. he covered "ain't living long like this" by waylon jennings and "born this way" by gaga. crowd lost its shit for the latter. one dude near me went bonkers for the former. it was a fun show to return to live music, except for some audience elements.

James Taylor & Jackson Browne were both entertaining. They each joined each other for one song in each other's set, and more or less played all the hits. Taylor incorporated a bunch of fan videos that appeared to be recorded during lockdown into some of his visual production, which was pretty cool. He also added his youngest son to his grouping of backing singers, which...whatever, he has certainly earned the right to have whomever he wishes on stage with him.
My buddy and I each masked up, and while the vast majority of the audience didn't, there were plenty of people wearing them throughout the show. Overall it was a fun night, I am happy live music is back.

Seems like JT dropped “Millworker” from his setlist after 2015. That’s too bad; it’s one of his best imo.
Assuming Jackson Browne did not suck, I’ll have to catch one of his shows before long.

The Jimmy Eat World set was incredible last night. Opened with a few new songs, then went into all of Bleed American. Really good crowd to that ate it all up. Closed with a few songs from Futures in the encore, and last with 23, which was a perfect end.
Did not like Aquadolls at all. Could not play their instruments well, not very good songs either.

Last night I played one of the longest sets I've ever done. I was on a bill with two other guys, and we each got an hour. Earlier this week, I noticed the pickup on my acoustic was loose, so I took it in to get it fixed. Got it back Thursday. When I go to plug in last night, there's no sound from the amp. The guy who went before me graciously offers me his guitar to play, so before I start I'm already kind of angry that I'm playing someone else's guitar b/c mine isn't working.
I played about an hour, all originals. I screwed up one song and abandoned it, but otherwise, I think I did a pretty good job.
This venue was outside of the city limits. It was behind a double wide and another old house that was covered with mildew. This guy who owned the double wide had built a stage with a small PA system, plus a shack where they sold cheap domestic beer. Restroom was a port-o-potty. There were a few folding chairs, tables were those giant spools for cables. Before the show, he asked if we wanted to try some homemade apple-flavored moonshine. I said sure. It tasted pretty good, though 10 seconds later I needed a chaser. It was a good night - my fiance brought lawn chairs, and it wasn't as hot as it had been the past few days.

Modest Mouse is extremely hit or miss as a live act, maybe more so than any other artist I've seen live multiple times. Last night was a hit, albeit a slightly shorter set than usual. They played a nice mix of songs from throughout their catalog, including Convenient Parking for the first time since 1997. It seems we are in a honeymoon period of sorts for live music right now, as every artist I've seen over the last week or so has seemingly been in a great mood and the the performances have reflected that.

JPEGMAFIA was great. Really good crowd and I was able to hang by myself toward the back of the room without being overly close to anybody.
Only bummer was that his laptop died during “Rainbow Six” and he had to do the last couple a cappella. But that also ruled and most of the crowd knew all the words. Fun time.

It was great to be back at the bandshell for Celebrate Brooklyn!'s opening night on Saturday. Nesta opened and he clearly had a good amount of family/friends there seated in the front section. Not really my thing, but I thought he was pretty good regardless. Kamauu was the second opener. I missed about half of his set while waiting in line for beverages, but I thought he was pretty average anyway. I only regretted missing Adeline sitting in on guest vocals and bass towards the end of his set. Ari Lennox was the headliner and while I'm not a fan of smooth R&B, I thought she had a great voice, great stage presence and put on an entertaining show. She also had a penchant for salty language which I enjoyed in contrast to the music. She was also funny. Oh, and J. Cole came on for a guest appearance during one of her final tunes. The crowd went absolutely nuts. Side notes: - Loved the ASL interpreters that they now have for every show.
- Weather was absolutely perfect.
- Met the President of BRIC as well as the Executive Producer of Celebrate Brooklyn! and the presumptive new City Comptroller brushed past me on his way to the stage.
- We walked over just as the gates were opening 90 minutes before showtime. The line to get in is always long, especially on opening night, but this line was about twice as long as I've ever seen it (about 1/2 mile). Nevertheless, they managed to get everyone inside by showtime and they did not appear to reach full capacity.
monasterymonochrome Did you make it over?

Saw Buffy Sainte-Marie at Celebrate Brooklyn! last night and she put on a very good show. Didn't really know much about her going in, but I was surprised to learn that she co-wrote "Up Where We Belong" and appeared on Sesame Street as a musical guest multiple times. Most memorable were her performances of "Cripple Creek" on mouthbow and the aforementioned "Up Where We Belong". Most of the rest of the set had a rock tilt and her three-piece band reminded me of latter day Lou Reed or Crazy Horse. The show was sparsely attended (maybe 30-40% capacity?), but there were definitely some superfans there, which made up in part for the lack of numbers.
Naia Kete opened the show. I was looking forward to her set based on a YouTube video I saw, but she played a full hour and her schtick got old pretty quick. She has an excellent voice (apparently she appeared on the second season of The Voice), but her songwriting left something to be desired. Seemed like she over-explained about how every song was trauma-informed.

Went to Lincoln Hall for Small Black last night. It was very good to be back there, and having them actually check the vax cards made me feel a little more comfortable than at the Metro last week, but I still wore a mask in the venue (I would guess maybe 10% of the crowd did).
It was an interesting night, it was the first show back for a large portion of the crowd, so they had a lot of energy. The opener, Korine, was very good, slightly goth-y dance pop.
One of the odd things was there was a woman with VERY big hair right in front of the stage dead center. She looked like a younger version of Scary Lady Sarah (anyone who has gone to any goth type show in Chicago has seen her). I think someone accidentally spilled a bit of something on the back of her hair during the opener, and she FLIPPED OUT.
Then during Small Black's set, during one of the slower songs, some guy got on stage and decided that was the time to stage dive. Like one guy in the crowd barely caught him, so that was a big failure.
Lastly, the door guy actually did take a few seconds looking over my vax card and compared it to my license the whole time, so they seem to be taking it very seriously.

The rain delay pushed the start time back about two and a half hours, but Willie Nelson was really great, even though he only played for about 45-50 minutes. He’s definitely showing some signs of age but he loves what he’s doing and it’s fun to watch.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed seeing the Avett brothers. I have notably not cared much for them on record since I was in early high school but they sound really put together. One thing that was a little grating is the solos that they’d do were really boring and way too long, primarily on the upright bass and fiddle. This is coming from the guy who has favorite Drums>Space recordings. I slipped out after they played Head Full of Doubt because I parked really far away and was unlikely to see a song of theirs I really wanted to. Overall a great time!

The Black Crowes were great, even if this whole tour was/is a cash grab. In addition to Shake Your Money Maker in full, (the irony of the album title and the premise of the tour was not lost on me) they played pretty much all the hits. Chris was still moving around quite well, even now in his mid 50s. The show wasn't close to sold out, but I was surprised at just how full Tinley was. I suppose that between the "reunion", pent up entertainment demand from the pandemic, and the promise of a greatest hits set - the Robinson brothers were able to create a bigger draw for the Crowes than ever before.

We had our first show back last night! I grabbed some cheap last-minute tickets for Hall & Oates/Squeeze/Kool & the Gang since it was super close and convenient.
Squeeze was GREAT, K&TG brought Gritty onstage and I'm pretty sure it was the same set I've seen Daryl 'n' John do before, but it was nice and felt pretty good. We wore masks most of the time, but only saw a few other people doing the same.

Did this show in Milwaukee last night. Setlist (after SYMM) was excellent. The fill-ins were really solid, especially the 2nd guitarist. I was most surprised by their amphitheater style stage set-up. Fancy riser for the back-up singers. A bartender who didn't serve one g-d drink. VIP viewing platform over the guitar techs. I've seen them a bunch of times and this was way beyond anything they've ever done before. When they come back next year to do The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion I'll definitely be there. I'd also like to mention that however much money the put into the rehab of the American Family Insurance Amphitheater wasn't enough. That place still sucks. The layout is so weird. The concourses are terrible. The drink options are pathetic. We had pretty good seats so maybe if we were farther back I would have appreciated the better sight lines but I was unimpressed.

I went to the ZZ Top, Willie Nelson and Family, and George Thorogood show last night. George Thorogood was okay in a country fair sense. No big surprises and he sounded okay. Willie Nelson was great in some parts and sad in other parts. He seemed to forget some of the words and would get lost playing guitar as well. But, he did have some great moments. ZZ Top really sounded good. Greatest hits made everyone happy.

I'm really excited to actually post a review in this thread
I saw The Mountain Goats last night and they were great. I'm not a particularly huge fan, though I do like multiple albums. They sounded good and seemed to be having a blast playing and just looked happy to be there. Outside of the Flaming Lips bubble show this was my first full band live show I've seen since Covid was a thing and it was just so nice to hear live music again and also "This Year" is super cathartic to hear live right now
The show was vaccinated only and as I mentioned they wanted the actual physical vaccine card at request of the band, and I like an absolute idiot apparently have misplaced said card. I tore apart my whole apartment looking for it and I'm very upset that I don't have it because I legitimately don't know how to replace it (this country not tracking that more officially is a huge fuck up but I digress) . Though also I hate the idea of bringing the actual card with me everywhere because I'm sure I'd lose it out if I did that at some point because I am clumsy. But anyways I had to go to the box office and sweet talk a manager with the picture of my card and showed my appointment confirmation emails which line up with the dates on my card and they ended up letting me in.
Also mask usage at this show was probably above 90% on top of that. Everyone followed that rule. I was kind of surprised. It was an indoor show though so I get it. Between that and the vaccine thing I felt very safe

i think i heard you can go to the place you got vaxxed and they should be able to fill out a new card for you. that might be easier if it's a pharmacy as opposed to some mass vaccination place, tho.
