i think i heard you can go to the place you got vaxxed and they should be able to fill out a new card for you. that might be easier if it's a pharmacy as opposed to some mass vaccination place, tho. I did it through CVS and I found out they do have a digital record of it and apparently I can go get a new one so crisis averted Just not sure if I have to go the same CVS, I had to drive to one 90 miles away at the time to find an appointment, but I guess I'll find out

Went to see Wu-Tang Clan with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra at Mission Ballroom last night. After the hubbub AEG made earlier this week I was surprised they were not checking vaccination cards. I was wearing a mask but I'd say I was in the 1% in that regard.
Big Boi opened and played several Outkast hits and was generally very enjoyable. Wu-Tang however...they decided they'd give us all in CO a "special performance" and in addition to the symphony they'd screen the 36th Chamber of Shaolin while they performed. But instead of just playing a concert with the movie running in the background, they played 3-5 minutes of the film (with some accompaniment from the symphony), and then they'd come out a do a song for 3-5 minutes while there was a fight scene or something playing. So there was absolutely no momentum. I was over it after about an hour and left.

I don’t think Mission was included on the list of venues checking for proof of vaccination.

Hella Mega didn't quite live up to the name, but it was still nice to be back at Wrigley for a big summer show again. I wish Weezer had gotten more time, but when you have three "headliners" no one really gets a full set, even with the early start time (Weezer hit the stage at 6:10). Fallout Boy were fine but I spent most of their set in the merch line with my buddy. I ended up buying a t-shirt just because I felt so pot committed after standing in line for 40 minutes. Green Day did an abbreviated version of their normal set, I think its time for them to change up their live show a bit. The whole bringing a fan on stage to play felt particularly forced and rushed - the fan didn't even get to stay up there for a full song. Still, I enjoyed myself and it was nice seeing krentist and rango, even briefly.

Wild that Green Day has totally abandoned playing the material from their last album already.
I get why, but still...

Had a great time at Hella Mega tour. All three bands were great. So many hits. I do wish Green Day would drop the ayoooooooooooo's and play more tunes though since they have such a deep catalogue.

The Hella MAGA tour was sick as hell. StubHub told us not to buy our seats but they ended up being second row production holds just behind the pit. Shit algorithm but I had a great time.

Had a v pleasant weekend at the Hoxeyville festival, a little bluegrass fest in the Manistee National Forest in Michigan. Fairly rustic, leafy camping at the edge of the woods, and only about a five minute walk to the rail if you were so inclined (most weren't; chairs are encouraged behind the sound booth, and there was lots of room to spread a blanket). Never a wait for anything, free water, great food, top notch hippie merch, gorgeous weather and kind people - honestly just a whole vibe. Did I mention it was the Perseid meteor shower? Billy Strings headlined the first two nights (we didn't stay for the third) and this is sort of his hometown fest, apparently. The first night's set felt quick but blistering - hits heavy, with an unexpected "Mire" opener, a raucous "Ole Slewfoot" and a sprawling, transcendent "Home" with sitar and djembe - kinda felt like Dylan going electric. The second day we caught a bit of Lindsay Lou (fairly generic sounding Nashville country), the Allman Betts Band (exactly what you'd think; the kids did a serviceable job on their dads' songs, Billy joined them for " Midnight Rider", and they threw in a fun "Shakedown Street" cover that got the crowd moving). Billy's set the second night was a bit more sedate aside from a blazing "Little Maggie" and a joyful "Cassidy" cover. A slyly creepy "Psycho" rounded out the back half of the set, and the encore of "If Your Hair's Too Long (There's Sin in Your Heart)" was the perfect way to end the weekend. Five stars! Would go again!

The Jason Isbell show was pretty great last night. The setlist was almost all Reunions, which was perfect for me since that is the album of his I really love. Crowd was fine, venue didn't make it clear that we could bring a chair or something if we had infield tickets, so we just sat in the stands. alady you did not miss out on the pretzel I was talking about at the Billy Strings show, they did not have the tent set up for it last night, so they must not make those during the concerts. Went to Cloud Nothings Friday night at the Bottle too, they rocked. Got to hear alot of the older songs I like the most, so that worked out for me too. Loud af too, my ears were ringing pretty badly the next day despite using my usual earplugs.

I thought all the reunions stuff sounded pretty good. I feel like he's at the point where he can play marathon shows but just doesn't. Oh well. Once an album cycle is enough for me. The people who brought lawn chairs to the infield need to be shot next time.
It was sick that he closed with Sway though.
It was also very sick that the hot dog guy came around with his surplus inventory at tbe end of the show and gave it away for free

Junglepussy was supposed to headline on Friday night at Celebrate Brooklyn! but on Wednesday she announced she was dropping out because she thought she could, "...perform in a pandemic but that is simply not the case." The festival booked Kool Keith in her place. I'm not at all familiar with his music, but I enjoyed many of his tunes. Unfortunately, the show was very sparsely attended.
Saturday night was the Wilco/Sleater-Kinney show at Forest Hills Stadium, rescheduled from 2020. We had great seats in the ninth row, but the weather did not play along. I lasagna'd on NNAMDI, but we were in our seats with time to spare for Sleater-Kinney who put on a very good show. They were only about halfway through their set when they had to stop due to a lightning strike in the area.
It was only drizzling when they left the stage, but the venue staff asked everyone to shelter underneath the stands. What was estimated to be a half hour delay ended up being more like 70 minutes. The rain became heavier and at one point, there was about an inch of running water flowing through that area where we were all huddled. While the We <3 NYC Homecoming concert in Central Park was evacuated, then cancelled, Wilco took the stage about 20 minutes later than scheduled (with Corin and Carrie singing backup on "Shot in the Arm" to kick off the set).
Shows at Forest Hills seem to end at 10pm (it's surrounded by a mostly residential neighborhood) and Wilco played about 80 minutes, so I'm guessing we missed out on a few songs. Despite the rain delay, the crowd seemed to be in a great mood. The rain alternated between drizzle and downpour during the set. When one particularly heavy downpour started, the audience spontaneously erupted into a massive cheer. A lot of people left during the rain delay, and I thought about leaving, too, but I'm glad we stayed because it was so incredible to see Wilco again. This was my ninth show of the year, but it was the one that carried the greatest emotional wallop in terms of having sorely missed and feeling more thankful than ever for live music.
Getting back to south Brooklyn from Queens was a total shitshow. I had the foresight to bring emergency ponchos, but we were completely soaked anyway. Normally, the F train runs from Forest Hills back to my neighborhood; it's a long ride, but it's direct. Being the weekend, the MTA was doing repairs so the subways were all messed up and there was no F service at Forest Hills. We took an E to Court Square and transferred to a G, but sat for about 20 minutes before it left the station. Then I realized the G wouldn't be stopping at either of the stations in my neighborhood and meanwhile the rain had become a steady downpour. We got off about a mile away from home and paid surge pricing for a Lyft to take us the rest of the way. Totally worth it.

Loud af too, my ears were ringing pretty badly the next day despite using my usual earplugs. The run of "wasted days" --> "Now Hear In" --> "Stay Useless" was something I didn't know I needed in my life. Reminded me why I've seen this band so much in my life. The opener Mansa (spelling?) was pretty interesting too. Solid night overall. Also the Bottle takes credit cards now.... never thought I'd see the day!

Lots of shows over the last week! Gonna run through them quickly here:
Saw Garcia Peoples do two sets on the Sultan Room rooftop on Wednesday night. Sultan Room is quickly becoming one of my favorite NYC venues, partly because they've been booking the NYC psych-jam groups, and because of their proximity to Los Hermanos Tortilleria. GP crushed it - probably the best of the three times I've seen them. They did the entire Cosmic Cash suite, played some awesome, energetic new songs, and also played an epic version of "One Step Behind," with a menacing, slowed down introduction. Jammed it out for nearly 25 minutes. One of the best live songs period.
Next was the Celebrate Biggie show at the Prospect Park bandshell, w/ tix courtesy of Doso. Went with Emma, her sister, and a friend of mine who was in town for the weekend. Saw The LOX (pretty good, lots of energy, but I wasn't overly familiar w/ their catalogue), Lil Kim (honestly a little disappointing even tho I was most excited for her, she played a good setlist, but was relying way too much on call-and-response with the crowd, sometimes sitting out half an entire verse), and Busta Rhymes (easily the MVP of the night - dude put on a show and had the crowd going insane. His set seemed to fly by). Energy was incredible there, great vibes all around. Fun night - thanks, doso!
The next day my friend and I went to the Met and decided to wander through Central Park. They happened to be soundchecking the ill-fated NYC Homecoming festival, you may have heard of, while we were there. And we recognized from a short distance.... the opening riffs of Copacabana?! That's fuckin' right, Barry Motherfucking Manilow was soundchecking his set around 3:00pm for a crowd of ~100 people, ourselves included. It was a 10-15 minute medley of his hits, and me and the moms next to me were vibing. Barry cut off his band a couple times, had them run through certain sections a few times, and honestly sounded pretty good for 78. Then he ran through the whole set again! I'm counting this for the trapper keeper.
And that night was Dead and Company at Citi Field - the reason my friend was in town. Got to experience a proper Shakedown Street for the first time, as they weren't really set up last time and obvs can't at MSG. Drank some wine, watched some people, snacked on a burrito, and got myself a Brent / Schroder from Peanuts crossover t-shirt. The show itself was great - and probably also the best I've seen them? First set was pretty by the numbers, tho I was thrilled to get Cassidy. Second set felt pretty special though. Eyes was an excellent opener, jammed waaay out for Dead and Co, then into a similarly extended take on Uncle John's Band. Oteil was amazing taking lead on China Doll, which fell into a solid China > Rider and a pretty high-energy Drums > Space, which came out into fuckin' Spanish Jam? Really cool moment for me. Rest of the set was good fun - closing with The Weight. Great night altogether. Bobby sounded nice and Jeff was the MVP holding it down on the keys.
Finally, the next day was the aforementioned Homecoming festival, aka Bill DeBlasio's We Beat Covid Fest, again with tix courtesy of Doso. However, the hurricane was bearing down, and Emma and I were spending a nice afternoon discussing wedding plans (!!) with her parents. We got to the train to head over, but checked the forecast and saw that rain was coming around 7:00 and bailed. Turned out to be 1000% the right call. All accounts I've seen of the fest were kind of a mess. Hours-long lines to get in, poor sight lines (something I confirmed the day before), and, obviously, a torrential fucking downpour that wiped out Springsteen, Simon, JHud, Costello, and more's sets. Way to go, Bill!

We were in the upper deck on the third base line, not sure where that happened but no one seemed aware of it that night. Not sure the band even knew.

Went to Milwaukee to see Modest Mouse at the Riverside Theater on Saturday with a group of friends. Got a cool Airbnb and got drinks at Bryant's beforehand. Still my favorite cocktail bar I've ever been to.
The show was terrific. Opened with a powerhouse 1-2 punch of Dramamine and Night on the Sun, and weaved in really great older songs while also playing most of the new album.
The show was pretty undersold (balcony maybe 10% full?) so we had a bunch of room. Sounded great and was pretty cathartic. First time I've seen a non-festival set by them.

last night was my first club show in 18 months, bully at off broadway, and man was it good to be back. proof of vax and fully masked was a little different at first, but no one seemed to mind. they played all of the hits (trying->i remember was hot) and the new songs were great (every tradition was a standout). it was packed, lively and alicia said something about how stl is one of her favorite stops. ran into some friends i havent seen in a long time, because, ya know, no shows, and it was great to catch up.
on the second or third song, some people started yelling for them to turn it up and the band members were pointing at their instruments and pointing up at various points. i thought the mix was a little off with the guitar and bass. That's when i realized fuck its good to be back going to shows again ... and a shiteating grin came across my masked face.
