The music guy in me wants to see DBT in a proper venue show but the guy who just wanted to see (one of) his dead uncle’s favorite bands is content. Temperance setup for out of space is pretty solid too

Yeah it was all outdoor. I imagine it'd get hot as fuck since it's all pavement but luckily it was only like 70 degrees out. The stage is all the way in the back of the lot, which is good. Plenty of space even at the start of the show (it was not sold out so that probably helped). $7 for a decent beer, they even had some draft in the taproom. Sound is good- it got a little muddled once you went behind the booth but a basic understanding of acoustics can tell you that happens at any outdoor space. It wasn't a huge pain in the ass to get to so I'd definitely go back next year if they book someone I care about.
Edit: and I did see them turning away people who couldn't provide proof of vaxx/negative test so there's that

American Aquarium put on a really great show last night. Got pretty much all my favorite tracks from last year’s album and they closed with a cover of Queen of My Double Wide Trailer which was really fun. Katie Pruitt opened and sounded wonderful. I really enjoyed her record last year and it was impressive to see how well she was able to shift that to a live show

Home and showered now thanks to finding a spot right outside the metro and living five minutes away
This was an amazing show. These guys are going to be the biggest band in a year or two. We got the Underwater Boi live debut which was more than I could have hoped for. Constant stage diving from the first note of the opener (Buggin, great local band) until the last notes of TLC.
So the show is close to wrapping up, they’re playing Holiday and it’s pit time for this 35 year old bag of ancient bones. I feel something on my shoe. This girl I don’t know grabs me by my collar and pulls me out of the pit and is like I think someone just puked on us. I go surely it was just someone spilling their drink and she goes no I felt it and it was warm. So I pull out my phone flashlight and sure as shit it’s a big old puddle of puke. My girlfriend leaves to go get the car at this point, impressed by the music but disgusted by the scene. The area clears out until people eventually start dancing in the vomit. We tell them what’s happening and they don’t care.
Show of the year so far. Your move, Gulch.

Kevin Morby was really good last night. It was his first show in Florida. He opened with "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine" on account of that being where the show was.

Alanis put on an enjoyable nostalgia driven set at Tinley last night. Her voice is still 100%, and she mixed in some newer songs in addition to playing Jagged Little Pill in full. Garbage ran through an hour long greatest hits setlist, with Shirley Manson taking time in between songs to wax nostalgic, mostly regarding their rise to fame in the mid 90s. We missed Cat Power unfortunately, as Google had us enter the venue from the south, and it took over 30 minutes to get parked from the time we reached the venue. The audience was 75% female which came as no surprise, lines for the ladies room were so long security was directing them to use the stalls in the men's. By the end of the night women were using the troughs as well. It was a fun night, and this was a perfect fist concert for MPH since having our son. Thanks to nanatod for driving.

I saw Chelsea Cutler and Quinn XCII on Saturday at Northerly Island. This was the most middle of the road whitebread pop show ever and it had a sold out amphitheater of twenty somethings absolutely losing their shit. There was nothing particularly bad or offensive about it but there's just a disconnect between me and this scene/kind of music. I think knowing I was missing St. Vincent at the same time added a little sting to that.
Hadn't gone to Northerly Island in a while. I sprang for VIP parking and there's no way I don't do that for every show I drive to going forward. Watching everyone walk down Solidarity like zombies after the show gave me major ptsd.

Emma and I went to this tour in Long Island a few weeks back and had pretty much the same experience lol. Super fun show, Alanis sounded amazing, and the pistachio soft serve we had before the show was divine.

I paid $30, and yes I was able to park probably 100 feet from the security lines. No wait whatsoever to get in or out. If you didn't pay in advance on Ticketmaster I think it was $40 though.

Long write-up incoming from the 2021 Outlaw Music Festival stop in Philadelphia last Saturday:
Bought these tickets back in May b/c Willie's 90 goddamn years old and I need to catch him once before he goes, or - perhaps the more likely scenario - he lives to be 190 and I go first. The lineup this year was ridiculous: Margo Price > Govt' Mule > Sturgill Simpson > Willie and the Family. Emma and I Amtrak'd it over to Philly in the morning, did a grand walking tour of the city (I logged 35,000 steps), ate some Beiler's Donuts, Dinic's roast pork, and cheesesteaks at Pat's (which, while they were delicious, I'm not convinced they're the best the city has to offer. If any real heads have some recommendations - I'm down to hear them). Then Emma grabbed a train back to NYC (still haven't gotten her onboard the country bandwagon) and I headed over to the Mann Center.
Vibes at the amphitheater were great. Some parties in the lot, tons of Deadheads on-site, and very enthusiastic responses to all performers throughout the night. Margo led things off and sounded fantastic. Most of her originals were from her latest album. I wish there had been more from All-American Made, but I'm not complaining. Highlight was a booming cover of "You Don't Own Me" dedicated to the bullshit going on in Texas.
Next was Gov't Mule - who I'd never seen before and hadn't really listened to much of either. They were originally an Allman Brothers (90s era) offshoot, and that influence is still there. Warren Haynes has a strong southern rock voice, like a more measured Gregg Allman. And his playing was sublime. Dude is a remarkably commanding guitar player, breaking free from the blues-rock structures of most of his songs and ascending into really soaring territories. By the end of their hour I was totally converted. Warren has a reputation as one of the greatest living guitarists and, in the immediately afterglow of that set, I'm inclined to agree. Not gonna like dive into their live archives or anything, but I'll def see them next time they're in town.
Sturgill came next and the crowd was fucking electric for him. He had the bluegrass band with him - mandolin, banjo, upright bass, snare and hi-hat, plus three acoustic guitars. And they were remarkably tight. The mandolin player had the best solos and the biggest cheers, but the whole band was really into it and watching their interplay was honestly joyful. Sturgill killed, of course. I haven't seen him since the end of his Metamodern era, and his set ranged from bluegrass versions of tracks from his first three albums, and a few cuts from Dood and Juanita (one of my fave albums of the year). Brought the house down.
Finally, Willie came out to do an hour around 9:45. He looked a little frail walking to his chair, but he sounded great. I was honestly taken aback by how strong and clear his vocal tone was. If you closed your eyes - well - you could probably tell that it wasn't 1978 anymore, but you certainly wouldn't think it was 2021. I was bracing myself for a potential Brian Wilson Pitchfork set experience, or even something like when I saw Kristofferson in 2019 and he couldn't sing much above a whisper. But Willie could still deliver. Now, his phrasing was a little off, and he missed an entry on "Whiskey River," perhaps attributed to a monitor error, but he was singing the hell out of his songs and was even soloing and carrying the lead on his acoustic guitar. Highlight was absolutely his Funny How Time Slips Away > Crazy > Night Life medley. Lowlight was letting his son Micah perform two of his originals. But hey, it's The Family, and Willie needed some breaks to catch his breath, so whatever.
Caught the midnight train back to NYC and got home around 2:30am. Would do again!

Willie Nelson has never believed in "phrasing."
Also, there are few things better than just demolishing a shit ton of food at Reading Terminal Market. You made an excellent decision.

wdrl were ok, joyce manor was energetic, but not really my cup of tea, and the first 15 minutes of patti smith were a slow slog, and being the 5th time I've seen her, I was ready to leave early, until she played dancing barefoot, which in the past she had dueted with stipe, and then she kicked butt for the next 40 minutes. my former colleague, who was seeing patti for the 8th time, and I both agreed that it will be tough for anyone in the rest of the riot fest weekend to beat patti's set this evening.

Two shows in a week for us! (credit goes to the grandparents with the assist). I counted four different hat and shirt changes for Axl, one shirt change for Duff (he went from Sly Stallone's mug shot to Ice-T), and Slash rocked a Janis Joplin shirt all night.

Torres was really great at the Bottle last night. I think I’ve seen almost all of her Chicago shows, and this was the first where Mackenzie genuinely looked happy. So that was good to see. The songs from the last two albums sounded pretty great live too.

All things considered Axl still sounds really good. What a band. He sounded a little gassed when he was trying to run around the stage during Brownstone. After that he limited his movement a bit more and sounded great for the rest of the show.

Ratboys kicked ass last night at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Was part of their double-headlining tour with Wild Pink. They went on first but played about 1:10 - with an amazing setlist (7 from Printer's Devil, 3 from GN and Happy Birthday, Ratboy, plus one from VOID and an amazing John Denver cover that I don't want to completely spoil in case any of y'all are seeing them at Riot Fest). Whole band was ripping, especially Dave. Amazing energy - great sound - great socks that I bought at the merch booth.
Wild Pink were also wonderful. Their pedal steel player was the MVP of the evening, and the new songs (about 3/4 of the set) sounded lovely. A Billion Little Lights is an AOTY contender for me, and last night elevated it just a little bit more. I was surprised they only went for ~55 minutes, despite getting the closing slot. But otherwise, no complaints.
