Ratboys kicked ass last night at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Was part of their double-headlining tour with Wild Pink. They went on first but played about 1:10 - with an amazing setlist (7 from Printer's Devil, 3 from GN and Happy Birthday, Ratboy, plus one from VOID and an amazing John Denver cover that I don't want to completely spoil in case any of y'all are seeing them at Riot Fest). Whole band was ripping, especially Dave. Amazing energy - great sound - great socks that I bought at the merch booth. Wild Pink were also wonderful. Their pedal steel player was the MVP of the evening, and the new songs (about 3/4 of the set) sounded lovely. A Billion Little Lights is an AOTY contender for me, and last night elevated it just a little bit more. I was surprised they only went for ~55 minutes, despite getting the closing slot. But otherwise, no complaints. Also, if you're seeing an indoor club show, mask up!! We're on fucking thin ice rn, and I don't want to see live music taken away again - especially come wintertime. Only about 30-40% of the crowd were masked. :/

the california bands were excellent today at riot fest. spider was old school, and a great way to open the day. the crowd for man on man wasn't big, but it was also a good set. just for friends were just not for me, because they were too pop. I did run into ferroman there, on my way to see the bronx, who were okay, but not as excellent as mariachi el bronx was whatever yr they played the fest in humboldt. bearings from ottawa have potential, big freedia was big freedia, and that's where I ran into thebosma, rango, wretched, and whatever board name the rockford guy used to use. four year strong, who I was excited to see was very disappointing. hepcat were great, maybe the best of the day, and after all that punk it was a nice palette cleaner to hear some ska. I liked best coast too, but wasn't impressed by state champs who were similar to four yr strong, and a little bit better than the latter.

Big Thief was so good last night. Couple of the new songs sounded amazing and pretty great setlist. I thought they were good at Pitchfork but they really work in a smaller venue Edit- just to add the conversation above me, the band requested everyone wear masks although it was only enforced at the door by the venue, mask usage was probably over 90% and they also did a vaccine check at the door.

Alanis put on an enjoyable nostalgia driven set at Tinley last night. Her voice is still 100%, and she mixed in some newer songs in addition to playing Jagged Little Pill in full. Garbage ran through an hour long greatest hits setlist, with Shirley Manson taking time in between songs to wax nostalgic, mostly regarding their rise to fame in the mid 90s. We missed Cat Power unfortunately, as Google had us enter the venue from the south, and it took over 30 minutes to get parked from the time we reached the venue. The audience was 75% female which came as no surprise, lines for the ladies room were so long security was directing them to use the stalls in the men's. By the end of the night women were using the troughs as well. It was a fun night, and this was a perfect fist concert for MPH since having our son. Thanks to nanatod for driving. Emma and I went to this tour in Long Island a few weeks back and had pretty much the same experience lol. Super fun show, Alanis sounded amazing, and the pistachio soft serve we had before the show was divine. Fiancee and I went to this show in STL last night, we had a good time. We caught the last half of Cat Power, it was just her solo, she sounded good. Garbage was very good, was surprised they played 'The Trick is to Keep Breathing' and 'Wicked Ways' - the latter with a bit of 'Personal Jesus' thrown in - as those are two deep cuts from their 2nd album. Alanis sounded good, was very happy she played 'Uninvited' as I like that song more than anything on Jagged Little Pill.

today's fest: I could have picked a better booth for lunch today than dumpling house, because I was not up to eating any of the stuffed cabbage. the gories were excellent as expected, facs may or may not have been good, but I was too nauseous from the hot sun and more than just lunch to concentrate on the playing. I didn't like 3oh3, but mother mother who played right after them, were really enjoyable. The crowd enjoyed kennyhoopla, but I did not. Ice T and body count were goofy, but great, and gave me a second wind. Thursday got better as they went along, the sisters in bleached were a little bit like the breeders (that's good), and knuckle puck were really disappointing.

alanis was good. like, REALLY good. i actually couldn't quite believe how good she sounded. i turned to a colleague and said at one point, "this could be half as good as it is, 25 years post-JLP, and i'd probably be satisfied." she just fucking crushed. i have no idea how many more markets its hitting that the board can take advantage of, but this cant be an expensive ticket. you should go.

I threw it and the oversized pancake away, but did eat the 3 cheese pierogi, the polish sausage, and a quarter of the sauerkraut that was dished out in the combo meal.

I don't think I can do that show justice with words, but I'll try. Metallica played a two hour career spanning perfect set. I screamed, sang, and sweated my ass off, and the crowd matched their energy the entire time. Once they hit the stage, it was like we were in our own Metallica universe (I realize how corny that sounds, but I mean it). There was no need to get a beer, and the bathroom could certainly wait, because this was a moment where every second needed to be soaked in. I realize that stadium bands don't play 1100 person clubs every day, but shows like that are the reason we go to shows. Absolutely amazing and an experience I will never forget. Thank you Metallica, and thank you Metro.

They really did hit just about every album in their catalog (Sorry Load and St Anger) And any time they leave Enter Sandman out is a bonus for me. I was having some serious FOMO last night.

Sturgill came next and the crowd was fucking electric for him. He had the bluegrass band with him - mandolin, banjo, upright bass, snare and hi-hat, plus three acoustic guitars. And they were remarkably tight. The mandolin player had the best solos and the biggest cheers, but the whole band was really into it and watching their interplay was honestly joyful. Sturgill killed, of course. I haven't seen him since the end of his Metamodern era, and his set ranged from bluegrass versions of tracks from his first three albums, and a few cuts from Dood and Juanita (one of my fave albums of the year). Brought the house down. By any chance, was it Sierra Hull? She opened for Ricky Skaggs at the bandshell in 2018 and played with Sturgill when he did that bluegrass streaming show last year. She fucking shreds, man.

Trombone Shorty closed out the season at Celebrate Brooklyn! last Saturday and it was at capacity which was great (although they ran out of food). I ended up on the rail and had a blast.

Had an incredible time at the Fugees reunion last night! Which is funny to say, because the whole experience before the band actually went on was something approaching terrible, but! They sounded so incredible, the energy was so electric, and the crowd was so into it - that everything else was redeemed and I left with a massive smile on my face. The show was at Pier 17 in Manhattan, a 3,000 capacity rooftop venue that I'd never been to before. I'm definitely not a fan. Doors opened at 6:00, slated start time was 7:00 (looool), I figured we'd be operating on Lauryn Hill time, so we didn't arrive until 7:15. Did not anticipate the venue being so poorly managed that we'd wait in line for about 50 minutes before getting in. They had 3,000 going through one entrance, which was only staffed with about four security guards and six metal detectors... shit quickly became a bottleneck and took forever. The blogs (BV, Stereogum) have been making easy Fugees/Lauryn Hill late jokes in their write-ups this morning, but I feel the oft-cited "3 hours late" line is a bit disingenuous. WE didn't get inside until 8:10, and there were hundreds to thousands of people behind us in line. If they had started on-time, they would have been playing to a 1/5 full room. That said... Lauryn's DJ went on at 8:30 and played for damn near an hour and a half. I could have done with a lot less than that. My feet hurt. My legs hurt. My fucked up back was sore. But then the massive band started setting up (10 piece brass section, 2 keyboards, drums, 3 backup singers, 2 guitars, bass - it was a monster) and shit quickly got hype. Huge horn fanfare introduction into "How Many Mics" - and the lid blew off the place. I was skeptical of how ritzy the venue and how yuppie-ish much of the crowd seemed, but everyone brought it when the music started. They played an abbreviated set - about 8 songs (the blogs list seven but there was an extended Wyclef freestyle / band jam that was really cool). And they played all the hits from The Score. Everyone sounded spectacular - especially, and obviously, Ms. Lauryn. Zealots and Fu-Gee-La were incredible, and "Killing Me Softly" was the obvious show highlight. Show ended at eleven and we fuckin' booked it for the exit - seeing that everyone was gonna be funneled through the one exit - oh yea - and we had to get our Yondr pouches unlocked (that shit sucked). Made it out quickly though and got home like 30 minutes later. Frustrating logistics, but I'd say only half of that was the band's fault. However, the music was so good and the experience was so cool - that I'm happy to have gone

Went in with pretty low expectations for Julien Baker tonight since I really wasn't a fan of Little Oblivions (except Repeat which she of course did not play) but that was actually one of the better times I've seen her. The band rips and the new album sounds much better live imo. I know the drummer is a guy she's been friends with and playing live music with for close to a decade. I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the band are people she knew from the local scene in Memphis. Redoing of Shadowboxing with a band was awesome and probably the highlight for me. Would love a live album of this tour.
