Julien Baker was excellent tonight. Started off on the balcony which had really great sound, but I couldn't see shit even though I'm 8 feet tall. Ended up by the bar.
What a wonderful show. I know I'm not young anymore now because I greatly appreciate these 10pm curfews for all ages shows.

Went in with pretty low expectations for Julien Baker tonight since I really wasn't a fan of Little Oblivions (except Repeat which she of course did not play) but that was actually one of the better times I've seen her. The band rips and the new album sounds much better live imo. I know the drummer is a guy she's been friends with and playing live music with for close to a decade. I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the band are people she knew from the local scene in Memphis. Redoing of Shadowboxing with a band was awesome and probably the highlight for me. Would love a live album of this tour. Really glad to hear this because I didn't love Little Oblivions either but the only time I've seen her she was completely solo so I am excited to see her with a band

Julien Baker put on the best show I’ve seen of hers. The live band adds so much to the show and it was really tremendous. Plus neader came to town unexpectedly so that’s always cool too

i saw the rolling stones last night at the dome in st. louis. i usually never go to big shows like that but figured im running out of chances to see them. the charlie tribute was touching, wild horses by request and mick still has the moves. the backup singers were terrific as well. indoor pyrotechnics give me the willies.

This weekend I went to the Roots N Blues Fest here in town with my fiancee. This was the first time I had gone all 3 days. I saw Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow, Mavis Staples, Natalie Hemby, Larkin Poe, Nikki Lane, Brittney Spencer, Mickey Guyton and Shemekia Copeland. Brandi, Mavis, Natalie and Nikki were the highlights of the weekend for me. Brandi invited Natalie and Brittney out on stage during her set to do 'We Are the Highwomen' and 'Crowded Table'. Natalie closed her set with 'Rainbow', which Kacey Musgraves recorded - I didn't know she co-wrote that! Sheryl played her radio hits. Weather was nice all weekend, except for Saturday where I thought I'd be ok with a t-shirt and jeans but then it dropped down to the low 60's/high 50's when the sun went down.

It felt really fucking good to see live music for the first time in such a long ass time. I think the set could have been shit and I would have appreciated it more under the circumstances, but James Blake was great. Two more shows next week, too. LFG

Indigo de Souza played a really solid set last night at Beat Kitchen. She has a really great backing band on tour with her right now, definitely worth seeing at some point soon before she blows up.

Got in 3 shows this weekend that weren't too bad.
Friday I first went to Metro for Middle Kids. I first saw them at Lincoln Hall about 4 years ago on their first album, and they were a little dull then. Thankfully they have improved and are touring on a very solid album this year. They definitely have matured as a band since then and are worth seeing at this point. Metro was only about 60% full, which I wasn't too surprised at. But a completely drunk couple was over on my usual side and were constantly moving around and blocking people's views, so I could not stand them.
The opener, Mattiel, wasn't too bad, it was just the singer and a guitarist, and the guitarist was doing all the loopy guitar effects thing, and so every song sounded the same after a while.
Then went over to Schubas quickly and made it in time for Transviolet. They are a new electronic-ish pop band who are borrowing pretty heavily from the Billy Eilish textbook. For a new band touring without supposed big label support, they somehow had a huge stage setup and had two huge LCD screens and nice lights and everything. No idea how they did that.
Last night I went to the Bottle for Nation of Language. They were pretty good and sounded exactly like you'd expect. They had a little trouble getting started due to some technical issues with the bass of all things, but once that was resolved it was pretty smooth. Really did not like most of the crowd, probably almost half the people there were not wearing masks, either because of the usual "I ordered a drink a half hour that I've been holding so I don't need to wear a mask" type, or several couples around me just straight up not wearing one. I pretty much left the show about 3 songs early because I did not want to be around that crowd any longer.
For anyone going tonight, the openers The Wants are pretty good. I think it's strange to say, but Disappears/FACS might be considered influential at this point, because The Wants were borrowing from them a ton, although their songs usually ended much more abruptly.

I pretty much left the show about 3 songs early because I did not want to be around that crowd any longer. I would guess 90% of the crowd at Friday's Primus/Black Mountain show just took their masks off - not under the chin, fully off - as soon after they were in the venue. The venue made a big deal about masks being required and security wouldn't let people enter without wearing one, but it's like they just turned a blind eye to it once people got inside and started spending money.

Yo La Tengo was sooo good at Central Park Summerstage on Friday night. Hadn't seen them since their two Thalia shows in 2018, and I'm already itching to see them again. Gonna try and make at least two of the Hanukkah shows this year - we'll see!
They led with "Who Loves The Sun" then jammed for what seemed like 7-8 minutes on Before We Run. The middle of the set featured I'll Be Around > Big Day Coming > Autumn Sweater, 3 of my 5 favorite YLT tracks. The first of which had me tearing up. They followed that with Deeper Into Movies and an amazing 13+ minute Pass the Hatchet...
Such a fun night - can't wait to see them again!

Went to my first club show since the pre-pandemic days this weekend. It was three local hardcore punk/noise rock bands - Rifle Cult, Ravenlich, Lowest Life. Had a pretty good turnout - I'd say over 100 people? It said the show was supposed to start at 9, but the sound guy said b/c these are all 15-20 minute sets they'd start around 9:45. Once the show got going I enjoyed it. The venue also asked for proof of vax or negative test before entering, so that was good.

Ratboys/Wild Pink tonight at the shitty barn was a great one. Super chill venue too, they have a bonfire going outside and you can kinda chill by it during set breaks. Everyone was respectful and nice and also both bands were great, though I do feel like Wild Pink can get a little same-y. Ratboys tore it up though, I love those guys.

Incredible show by Bartees Strange last night. Love the band he has with him, too. Looked like most of the sold out crowd showed up for their opening set.
Lucy Dacus was good as well - I'm not a huge fan of her new album, but the songs translate much better in a live setting. Not sure if that's a production issue or what.

Overall, ShoalsFest was pretty damn great. Saturday, we made it there in time to see most of Cedric Burnside's set which was fine. Amanda Shires performed her solo show for the first time since 2019 and played the best set of the day (with Isbell sitting in off to the side on guitar). I was really looking forward to seeing Candi Staton, but her band was a little too smooth for my taste. She looks and sounds great for being 80 years old, though. Lucinda Williams came out, sat down on a chair, and announced, "For those who don't know, I had a stroke last November, so it's easier to sit and I can't play guitar yet." She struggled with the timing during "Drunken Angel", but her excellent band covered for her and on everything else, her voice sounded very strong. Her set ended up being brief, but it was great to see her. Isbell played a pretty standard set which is always very good, but rarely surprising. He did call an audible in the middle and played the most stunning version of "Goddamn Lonely Love" I've ever heard. Truly worth being there for. No other DBT-era songs that night, but as he's been doing on most nights of this tour, he covered "Driver 8" and closed the encore with a killer note-perfect version of "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'". Sunday, we saw all of Pine Hill Haints who were pretty good. For me, the day began with the return of the mighty Slobberbone. Jess no longer plays with them and the new guy's solos don't really fit with the genre. But I love seeing bassist Brian Lane and Brent was in good spirits. They played a short set of nine "hits" with Patterson, Cooley and Isbell huddled together backstage enjoying the show. Patterson was inspired to crash the set and sing backup on "Gimme Back My Dog" and it was a very pleasant surprise to see Todd Beene (Glossary, Lucero) join them for about 2/3rds of the set on pedal steel. Then, the number one reason I attended this fest: the first Centro-matic performance since December 2014. It was nothing short of thrilling to see them again. I don't know what else I can say. Isbell sat in on guitar for the entire set, but played it cool and just chilled in the back. At least half the band was staying in my hotel and I had a nice brief interaction with Mark in the elevator that morning. Drive-By Truckers came on next and played just ten songs, but it felt different seeing them play a show in North Alabama after driving around/by/through Rodgersville, Colbert County, Lauderdale County, Highway 72, Wilson Dam, etc. Patterson's dad came out and played bass when they covered, "Everybody Needs Love" and, as expected/hoped for, Isbell came out for two songs: sitting in on "Heathens", then leading the band through, "The Day John Henry Died". Centro-matic's Scott Danbom sat in and played fiddle on a number of songs including the closer, "Angels and Fuselage". Isbell's second set of the weekend was, again, pretty standard with a fair amount of overlap compared to the previous night's set. Amanda did not play with him on Sunday night and I'd noted on Saturday that she seemed a little lost at times during his set. The big pay-off was the encore when he invited Patterson and Cooley to join him for performances of "Outfit" and "Decoration Day". The latter was particularly satisfying. Other notes from the weekend: - There were thunderstorms in the forecast for Sunday and I came prepped for the worst, but we got pretty lucky. It was overcast on Saturday and for part of Sunday with just some passing rain showers here and there. I put my hat on a few times, but never felt the need to break out the emergency ponchos. Thankfully, the temps were mostly in the 70s because the humidity was raging.
- As expected, it's not particularly easy to get an Uber or Lyft in Florence, Alabama after a fest with a few thousand people. They had no shuttles on Saturday and a broken-down shuttle on Sunday.
- I booked the hotel closest to the festival grounds. We walked to/from the fest both days (about 20-30 minutes each way). It was fine on the way there (all downhill), but it was a steep uphill climb from the banks of the Tennessee River to the hotel. Woof.
- I had lunch at Bunyan's Bar-B-Que on Saturday and Monday before leaving town. Highly recommended if you ever find yourself in Florence. It was also the one business I entered where all the employees and most of the customers were masked.
- The fest had the best corndog I've ever had -- even better than Hot Doug's.
- I checked out Wilson Dam before leaving town and drove over it which was very cool.
- There's no good way to get to Florence from NYC.
- I haven't been in the main terminal at LaGuardia for at least two years -- it's shockingly unrecognizable after the renovations.
- I requested a compact car rental, but they gave me a Mustang lol.
