Spiritualized were fun last night - really great to finally see them play live. Wish they would play some more older stuff (only 1 song off of Ladies and Gentlemen...), but it was still a good set. Thanks to jazzpolice for the ticket!

Sons of Kemet fucking killed it tonight and anyone who claims to like jazz and doesn’t listen to them is an idiot This really was an excellent show. If you didn’t think people would lose their shit over extended tuba techniques in 2022, you are sorely mistaken. Shabaka’s wooden pipe/recorder feature was very cool and Theon Cross played a conch at one point? Angel Bat Dawid and crew were perfect in the opening set, too. Wonderful stuff all around.

Lorde rules. I really like stage design for the current tour and I’m excited to see her again in Spain in 2 months. Is she popular on tiktok? It felt like the crowd tonight was even younger than when I saw her at LCA 4 years ago. Or maybe I just feel older now
Remi Wolf opened and was fine, I guess. Towards the end of her set I thought “this feels like some real mid-to-late afternoon Lolla shit,” and lo and behold that’s right where she is on that lineup

First time seeing Bon Iver last night, pretty solid set and the high points were amazing. The last like 7 songs of the main set all were fantastic before a sort of underwhelming encore. Glad I finally knocked him off the bucket list but I'm not sure I was like blown away

Idk if this interests anyone, but I wrote up some show-notes while seeing Bob Weir and Wolf Bros do their Ace 50th anniversary concert at Radio City last Saturday night.
- When I Paint My Masterpiece: Bob solo, sounded great and hammed it up a bit - Me and My Uncle: Sounded fine - Loser: love hearing some steel guitar floating over Bobby’s take on the lead solo. Tempo slowed but this band set-up works better for that vibe than Dead & Co - Bob, between songs: “Christ, has it really been 50 fuckin’ years?? I still feel like the same shit-kicking kid. Speaking of shit-kicking kids… here’s Tyler Childers!" - Greatest Story w/ Tyler Childers: TC took vocals and brought it with some rasp. Great solo trading between Jeff and steel guitarist. - Black Throated Wind: This was great. Powerful peak at end with saxophone, trombone and the steel guitarist going off. Bob owning his frontman duties. - Walk in the Sunshine: Lmao Bob recorded the “hippy dippy” lyrics in one take. Britney Spencer guesting on vocals. Lmao at people who thought that Donna was gonna come out to play this, of all songs. - Playin in the Band: Segued in from Sunshine. Soooo good. Jamming it out too w/ sax solo then some watery duets with Jeff and steel guy. Bobby doing some nice rhythm guitar. This solo killed. - Looks Like Rain: Brittney Spencer back on vox. Very fun outro with the two of them trading vocal interjections. - One More Saturday Night: A bit slower than I woulda liked it but it was still the best singalong so far. Loved screaming along to Bob on the finale. - Mexicali Blues: Bob pulled off a pretty nice segue into this. Looool but he still sang the 14 line. - Cassidy: This was sublime. My favorite Bob song / Barlow lyrics. Bob sounded great on vocals and lead guitar. Dropped out to just vox and drums for the Fare Thee Well verse. Tempo normal speed. Then jammed the song out with the violin taking lead. Whole version was probably around 10 minutes but took it to a really cool place.
Set break
- You Win Again: Sung by Tyler Childers - Weather Report Suite: Prolly the best song of the night (edit: SO FAR). Extremely cool arrangement with strings for prelude, then Let it Grow ripped into an extended jam featuring violin, cello, and a climactic sax solo. Would Relisten to this if there’s tapers in the house. Trombone solo closed it out then segued smoothly into… - Shakedown Street: The olds lost their shit when the chords came in. A bit slower than I would’ve liked but it grooved nicely. Trombone guy took over Jerry’s lead tone. - Wharf Rat: Ron Carter on the bass! Ron and Jeff vamp on the WR theme for a few minutes, often going a bit abstract. Ron sounded incredible. Trademark thick, plucked bass sound with glissandos up and down. Then… - Dark Star: They suddenly abandon Wharf Rat and drop into Dark Star. Everything about this kills. Ron and Jeff again taking the spotlight for the first round of jamming. Steel guitarist taking the role of Jerry for the song proper. Then Bob solos and sounded pretty fine before handing things over to the collective. Ron pounds out a run of quarter notes as Bobby moves us back into the second verse. Daaamn Bobby can still hold a note. Laaaaaaady in velvet. Then Bob repeats “Nightfall” into another round of free form. It’s so cool watching Ron pluck out his notes all the way from the mezzanine. Dude has massive fingers. This jam was wonderful - huge, huge highlight for me. I was all smiles. - Eyes of the World: Not my favorite song to hear Bobby tackle w/o guitar help but this sounded nice. Saxophone solo was a great addition. Only missed the Branford anniversary by a couple days! - What’s Goin On: Segued in from Eyes - duet with Brittney Spencer. They did it pretty well! Brittney sounded great of course, and Bob and her did a cool call and response too. Then melted it back into Eyes for a final verse and jam. - Days Between: Not one I’m super familiar with, as I haven’t listened to too much to the Vince era, but this is a good one. Glad Bobby is playing those latter day songs that didn’t get the shine they deserved at the time. - Playin in the Band: Reprise time! Floating in from the spacey jam at the end of Days Between, Bobby brought the chords in and soon it was off again!
I left during the Ripple encore b/c I was very sleepy and wanted to beat the crowds. Saw three white dudes with dreads, two wasted olds stumble around / nearly collapse on the stairs, and a partridge in a pear tree. Great night!

The chicago show was pretty bad so I find your notes interesting. While I like Brittany Spencer and love Childers I thought Bob was as strong as I'd ever seen him on Vox so I can see it being a cool surprise but somewhat unnecessary. Ron Carter on bass for the 2nd set is obviously very sick and the beginning of the first set here when it was just Bob and the direct wolf bros was very good.
However, It sounded like you liked the violin and horn section so either your brain is actively hemorrhaging or I saw a very very very very off night. They sounded like they were supporting Steve Vai at Epcot. it was so so so so so so so so so so so so bad. I actually think the violinist should be in prison.

Maybe literally lmao. Def agreed on Bob's vocals - noticeably better than any of the three times I'd seen him before. Idk, I think I enjoyed the accompaniments because they took the emphasis off of Bob's guitar, which I thought was pretty clunky most of the night. I liked when he'd settle into the rhythm like normal and let everyone else carry the lead. Never really noticed anything immediately wack about their arrangements - but I def wasn't being very critical / focusing most of my attention on them. Also a chance that most of the violinst's work was lost amongst the din of my shitty disposable earplugs, that can happen when it's a busy mix. Edit: just looked at your setlist and was the violin thing in regards to Weather Report Suite? Cuz I was feeling it in the moment but I could see how that could come across Steve Vai-adjacent.

The mix was incredibly loud in a really off-putting way but I think that was on purpose because it definitely had the vibe of "party show" vs "music show" (probably to hide some of bob's age for sure) which is fine but tough with the amount of instruments on stage was definitely overwhelming.
I will say I saw Lil Wayne on the Rebirth tour and found his guitar playing less destructive than the violinist in bob weir's band. Just full volume violin wanking with absolutely no tone or anything. He made Lindsay Sterling look like Laurie Anderson.

Flaming Lips put on a fun show as usual. This was my first time at the Riv post pandemic and I've gotta say I didn't notice any of the improvements Jam has been promoting on socials (granted, I did not venture into the balcony to see the new seats). It's still pretty run down.
I'm guessing the venue was around 2/3 full, and I couldn't help wonder at what point the production value they put on stops becoming financially viable. The Yoshimi robot has seen better days, that's for sure.

Yesterday I drove over 4 hours to the Quad Cities to see Low in Davenport, only to find out the show has been cancelled due to a Covid case in both bands. Godfuckingdammit.
So, ex-boarder Timbo and I decided to drive 45 minutes to the Mission Creek Festival in Iowa City, where we saw some of Beach Bunny, The Body, and Kassa Overall. Beach Bunny had a hyped crowd, but I didn't think their tunes were memorable. The Body sounded good, but I got tired of the screaming falsetto vocals after a while. Kassa Overall had the best set, dude would be perfect for a future Big Ears Fest. It was good to see some live music, even if what we saw wasn't what we traveled for.
And of course, I can't make the rescheduled Low date.

The upcharge for mezz or balcony seats now is clearly the reason for having done the upgrade. If I owned the property, I'd do the same, but let's not kid ourselves about who benefits.

Saw the menzingers/oso oso/sincere engineer last night. Boy do people love the menzingers! Oso oso was great- sounds good, main guy is playing guitar again, songs still bop. First time seeing sincere engineer- they were great and the crowd felt the biggest even though they were the first act on. Would do it again.
Concord sounds great but their drink prices and collections suck. Still an awkward ass venue

Jack White was fantastic last night. He's stripped his band down to a 4 piece and I've gotta say sometimes less is more. Nice career spanning setlist, he was def improvising quite a bit as well.
I was able to get my phone out of that stupid Yondr pouch pretty easily but it's enough already with those things.

Jack White was awesome last night at UIC. Got there about 30 minutes before Goose started and got a great spot dead center about 20 rows back on the floor. The lights and sound were incredible, and agreed with Pale Hose that the 4-piece band sounds even better.
Setlist was super fun and he is just such a commanding presence on stage. Pretty much a must-see live act if you have even a passing interest in The White Stripes. I'll be at the Milwaukee show in August for sure.

This current iteration of Built To Spill is so good. When Doug's in trio mode you know its gonna get heady but his current rhythm section has such a high energy and punk-ish vibe that it really energizes the jams even when they've gone fully out there. Really epic "Goin' Against Your Mind" tonight. 65-70 minute set too which was beautiful.
Jawbreaker were really good as well and glad to get some Bivouac but Dear You is my least favorite Jawbreaker album so the album set definitely felt a bit unnecessary. Was genuinely funny the amount of people complaining on the way out about no kiss the bottle or boxcar when they played Chesterfield king.
Smoking Popes were solid as always, I feel like every time I see them the lead singer sounds a little less like Morrissey and a little more like some guy in a midwest punk band but they busted out the hits in 35 minutes no complaints.
The crowd was full of just total mouth breathers. just the worst of the worst. thankfully only felt about 80-90% full so there was a little room to breathe and the sound was surprisingly good. Best of all the show ran really incredibly on time. I skipped the comedian opener but once Popes started at 8:10 it was one of the most prompt I can remember. Maybe 10 minutes between SP and BTS and 20 between BTS and Jawbreaker and Jawbreaker was done before midnight.

Saw 3 very dope Billy Strings shows this week. If a band you like is playing Santa Barbara Bowl, go. Just a beautiful spot, great sound and the kindest staff (I was traveling with a friend with limited mobility post-surgery and they hooked us up with incredible seats and assistance).
We got to sit with a bunch of old heads for both shows and they were a trip. First show we sat next to an older v trad bluegrass couple who had last been there to see Steve Martin. Very nice folks, looked like Midwestern grandparents. Grandpa was getting into it and started standing up after every song to clap. At set break he jumped up, turned to us and said "HOLY FUCKING SHIT." Would not have guessed those words were in his vocabulary lol and it was awesome how excited he and his old lady were.
First show highlights were a raucous "Thunder" and a cover of Little Feat's "Willin'" that I have been chasing for a while. Apparently Lowell George's son was in attendance and requested it.
Second show just felt v special, there was a hard 10 pm curfew as the Bowl is in a residential neighborhood so they cut the set break and Billy played a short solo banjo set. Highlights were "Little Maggie", a sweet version of "Miss the Mississippi and You" a ferocious "Wharf Rat" and a sybaritic "Sittin in Limbo" both of which the heads ate up but the night as a whole was just a heater that did not let up. Never miss a Sunday show, as they say.
Third show I got to share with a different friend at Santa Ana Observatory, a smoky little room about a quarter of the size of the Bowl. What that show lacked in atmosphere it made up for in energy with a hard charging set, punctuated with an unexpected cameo from Post Malone on "Cocaine Blues". The crowd was weird for this one with a mix of very drunk Orange County Boomers, legit white bearded Pranksters, Latinx youths, and refugees from the weekend's Skull & Roses festival who enjoyed the first set's "Cassidy". My friend was one of those, I think she liked it all pretty well for her first Billy show.
tl;dr I'm off terr now

Anyone looking at the Wilco YHF shows be warned - they played barely over an hour. They did the album plus a 3 song encore. The album performance was great (they had a string quartet and a 3 piece horn section) but I was really expecting a whole 2nd set or something. That was by far the shortest Wilco set I’ve ever seen and also the most expensive. Feeling pretty disappointed.
