Some thoughts upon seeing Big Thief, my favorite active band, for the sixth time, tonight at King’s Theatre in Brooklyn:
- Crazy how this band is now packing in massive concert halls. Fans absolutely losing their shit after every song. Crying. Screaming along. Amazing.
- Realized a huge reason I love watching James Krivchenia drum is he seriously channels Levon Helm’s stage presence - Wow, they rearranged Black Diamonds to be a fried rocker, complete with call and response choruses, a Buck Meek guitar solo, and Adrianne screams.
- Reminder to look if Big Thief bootlegs exist. They just ripped off another incredible version of Not and I am once again begging for a Big Thief live album. This song snarls, it’s a fiery beam of anxiety and transcendence. It’s Big Thief’s Cortez.
- Oh my god the Dragon New Warm title track was wild. Adrianne turned it into a fucking grunge song or something. Heavy, crunchy guitar tone on the main riff, manic energy from the rhythm section. A complete transformation of the song from the record. It stomped and swaggered. Incredible.
- Adrianne forgot the lyrics to the second and fourth lines of Sparrow and the crowd sung along, keeping the song moving. Really touching moment.
- One new song that I really wasn’t feeling. I think Adrianne repeated the line “I’m happy with you” about 50 times at least - Shark Smile opened with a wall of screaming guitar feedback and soloing before coalescing into a 110mph version. Could see the crowd bouncing along.
- Wow, huge crowd reaction for Real Love. Is this one Tik Tok famous now too? I can never keep track of this stuff, but they’ve played it every time I’ve seen them and never got that many wooooos of recognition.
- Woaaahhh the Real Love solo was molten. Adrianne was really leaning into the crowd’s energy too. This was a rock star moment. - Closing with her little brother Noah on the jaw harp! Spud Infinity in double time! Real hoe down shit. I love this band.

Man, I don’t think I’ve ever knowingly heard a Big Thief song but that review makes me feel like maybe I should.

A complete transformation of the song from the record. It stomped and swaggered. Incredible. I assume this version is the same they played at Pitchfork and when I saw them headlining in September. I absolutely love it and I very much want them to release a studio version of this take on the song. I like the album version but it's something else live

Anyone looking at the Wilco YHF shows be warned - they played barely over an hour. They did the album plus a 3 song encore. The album performance was great (they had a string quartet and a 3 piece horn section) but I was really expecting a whole 2nd set or something. That was by far the shortest Wilco set I’ve ever seen and also the most expensive. Feeling pretty disappointed. Are you fucking kidding me

i saw spoon last night. it was the first time i'd seen them since 2017 and my first show at the riv since 2015. it was a good reminder of why i've avoided the riv. but spoon was pretty entertaining. it was a good setlist. britt was in fine form.
for years i have apparently been confusing margaret glaspy with someone else because the woman opening the show did not sound at all like who i had in mind. she was good.

Completely agreed. The new Spoon songs sounded great last night, although they could have skipped the title track during the encore. But that band is firing on all cylinders still at this point.
Same about Margaret, I think I listened to her debut a few years ago, but didn't listen since. She and her band were definitely really good.

The most recent Margaret Glaspy record sounds vastly different from her debut so I would guess that’s part of it

Venom and mookie - if you paid for tickets from AXS do you remember how much they were? I looked at GA tickets yesterday afternoon on their site and they were $27. Trying to figure out if the price changed.

AXS is clearly doing that dynamic pricing too. 😕

The most recent Margaret Glaspy record sounds vastly different from her debut so I would guess that’s part of it oh no! i saw her in the lobby afterward and actually told her that i'd associated her name with someone whose music i don't like but "i realized as soon as i walked in that you're not the margaret glaspy who i've been thinking i don't like. no idea who i was confusing you with. i really enjoyed your set." she did laugh at that, so maybe she didn't take it too badly.

Attended the fourth of Wilco's five Yankee Hotel Foxtrot shows at United Palace in Washington Heights last night.
After see the very short set from their first night, I was contemplating how I might get rid of my ticket, but a) there was a lot of inventory available for the fourth and fifth shows, so I would've had to take a bath on it and b) I felt more inclined to go when they expanded their set to a whopping 19 songs total for the second and third shows.
TL;DR Overall, I'm glad I went and I only feel a little ripped off. If I knew all the facts before buying my ticket, I still would have wanted to go, but I would have purchased a ticket for less than face on the secondary market. If you're a Wilco fan in Chicago and you can get a decent seat for less than $100, I say go for it. It was a very good experience and unlikely to be repeated.
THE SHOW As expected, Wilco began promptly at 8:15 p.m. The argument against these shows when they were first announced was, "We've seen them play these songs dozens of times," so I was pleasantly surprised at how fresh it all sounded. The band demonstrated an incredible level of discipline, performing almost note-perfect renditions of each song from the album. The record has a running time of 52 minutes and they ended the album performance exactly at 9:07 p.m. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the songs in order as they were originally conceived, even though that meant no transcendent Nels solo as a coda to "Ashes of American Flags". Oh, and Tweedy didn't say a word.
The strings and horns were a nice touch. I was very fond of the lighting, especially the hanging Marina Tower-like structures. The slowly searching blue lights at the end of "Ashes" and the bright white clusters illuminating the theater interior for the final three ambient minutes of "Reservations" made for a couple of the most memorable moments. In fact, as the music faded during the final minute or so of "Reservations", there was a rare hush across the audience and you could almost hear a pin drop until some moron let out a yelp.
YEAH, IT WAS SHORT Even with the "extended" encore, the show was over at 9:42 p.m. -- just shy of 90 minutes total. As someone else pointed out on Reddit, many of us in the area now haven't seen a proper Wilco show since 2019 when they played Radio City Music Hall. Their concert at Forest Hills Stadium last summer was curtailed by the incoming hurricane that also cut short the big Central Park concert that same night. This was my first show at United Palace and while I wasn't thrilled with the 75 minute commute on the subway from Brooklyn, it's a lovely venue and the sound was outstanding. Certainly a massive improvement over the shows I saw at Kings Theatre earlier this month (Snail Mail and Big Thief), both of which suffered from an unacceptably muddy mix.
THE VENUE For a 3,300 seat theatre, the lobby is comparatively tiny. I was in my seat with less than five minutes to spare before Wilco went on, in part because security was super fucking tight. I saw multiple items being confiscated, with vape pens appearing to be the most common item. The merch area was very small, tucked in a corner of the lobby. And there appeared to be just one bar with a fairly lengthy line. They were also making people wait at the doors to the seating area to be shown to their seats by an usher (at least on the main floor).

Billy Strings continues to be one of the best live acts around. Hell of a setlist last night including some covers I really wanted. Alex Hargreaves was there with them on fiddle too which was a great treat, they only get joined by a fiddle player every once in a while. First time seeing Billy do a full set actually and loved it. Seeing him again tonight.
Show was my first at a new venue here called the 713 Music Hall (lame name by the way), which I was excited to check out. It's in the old post office building that used to host Day for Night. We desperately needed a venue of it's size (roughly 5k) in the inner city in Houston and it didn't disappoint, loved the setup and size of it. Excited to see more shows there, they were selling $20 no fees tickets to the upcoming Fleet Foxes show there and I jumped on that. Only downer is it's a livenation venue which meant $15 beers

Finally saw my first Phish shows this week! I was in the Garden for 4/20 and 4/21 and had an amazing time. Not gonna do a huge write-up for these because I didn't take notes during them, and I'm still sorting out my thoughts, so I'll be brief.
Wednesday night was a lot of fun, with some real high moments - especially Carini > Possum as the opener. That was probably the highlight of the show, but Down With Disease had some really cool moments once they locked into the jam. Also enjoyed hearing pretty by-the-numbers albeit awesome versions of Stash, Twist, and Drift While You're Sleeping, a Trey song that I was unfamiliar with going in, but worked exceptionally well as a set closing ballad. Obvs since it was my first show - subjectively - I thought it was great. But objectively they were more than a bit sloppy at points, particularly during the composed section of Reba. And I was bummed that Blaze On was cut off after only like 7 minutes. Gumbo > Slave was a great encore though and I left the show very happy.
Thursday night - however - was a fucking mindbender. Suzy > 46 Days opener was nice, wondered if they would stretch out 46 Days but nah. A bit later they sandwiched Avenu Malkanu inside The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday, maybe in honor of the last night of Passover? Also got a #rare Esther a few songs later. Then they went into Ghost and ascended to the next level. It ran for maybe 15 minutes and brought all the intensity and fire that was missing from Night 1. A Type I mindfuck that I'm excited to hear again today. They kept up that energy into and throughout the second set, which was just "holy shit!" moment after "holy shit!" moment. CDT > Tweezer > 2001 > Maze, each song leveling up on the one before. Like, I can't believe I saw a Tweezer on my second show - and it ripped, coming off the heals of a very beautiful CDT jam - but it was immediately overshadowed by an insane Maze. Page was the MVP of that jam, but the whole sequence was wild. We got a breather after that with About to Run, but then they jumped into Mango Song (seriously wtf was this setlist, wow) into Harry Hood, the final movement of which had me smiling from ear to ear. I figured that would be the set closer but they launched into Character Zero, taking it into some weird territory and then seamlessly melting back into a Tweezer jam! The crowd went fucking apeshit for that, such a cool moment. Encore features Life Beyond The Dream, one of the better Sigma Oasis songs, IMO. Works really well as a "Jerry ballad" of sorts. Then we got a proper Tweeprise to send us home.
Whoops this ended up being a long writeup. Oh well! Have fun tonight, Dij, wish I could be there!

Lorde was pretty outstanding last night. I was a little apprehensive when I saw she was playing 11 Solar Power songs but honestly the energy was there all night I thought. I was surprised by how into the new songs the crowd was. Definitely the livest crowd I've seen at Chicago Theater in a long while. Hopefully she's content with not really playing arenas anymore because that was a great venue for her.

I don't think I needed to see Wilco on this go round, but I'm awfully glad I did. Like doso said, the YHF tracks actually sounded really fresh and different- the brass and strings were a nice touch. It sounded pretty goshdarn close to the record too. Encore was short but good- most of it I haven't gotten at a show before and "Monday" is one of my favorite tunes so that was cool. Band really needs to jam more when they start playing regular sets again. Tickets are bottoming out on Stubhub so if you have any interest in the band and don't mind Lin from XRT opening the show I'd say go for it.
