Yeah really enjoyed Lorde tonight. From a setlist perspective as a big Medlodrama head was very happy with what was played.

Spoon were great in Milwaukee last night, although I suspect Britt's voice is still not 100%. He seemed like he was giving like 50-60% most of the night and they also had other members of the band sing lead on random verses of various songs. For purely selfish reasons I appreciate him gutting it out, as I likely would not have been able to attend a makeup date.
The was my first time at the actual Rave venue of building (I've been to a couple shows at the Eagles Ballroom). I liked the set up, flat main floor and seemingly limited balcony (we didn't go up there).
Also shout-out to the Rave for the tickets, the show was close to full but they still gave out 25 pairs of tickets to help fill up the room. They've always seemingly subscribed to the philosophy that it's better to give away a ticket and hope to sell some beer then just let it go unused all together.

I think the Lorde show was pretty perfect. I went on record of saying that the new songs, while not necessarily bad, aren’t her best work and probably wouldn’t translate the best live but after last night I can’t imagine a show without The Path, Mood Ring, Solar Power, or Fallen Fruit. It works maybe one million times better live and the setup for this tour is super cool as well. I haven’t been so firmly on the wavelength of a show in a while.
Sober>Supercut>Perfect Places>Solar Power>Green Light is such an insanely sick run to perform in a row, and the show didn’t even feel backloaded because of it. I really can’t imagine anything topping this show for me this year, or even just in general for a while.

Wilco were fantastic on Sunday I thought. Underestimated how cool it would be to see those songs in a different context than the Kicking Television versions they've stuck to for 15 years or whatever. Really worked both as a piece of music and a rock concert which I think is rare at the scale of band they are at. Also, can see why a 70 minute set would be underwhelming but I thought most of the stuff they played after that was fairly pointless although certainly not unwelcome. Would've been happy to just get the YHF + b-sides. I was also home and in bed by 10:30 pm despite getting off a train stop early and stopping at taco bell (veggie white hot ranch burrito good flavor wise but not worth the $3.50 when the rice and bean burrito is a $1 and only slightly less tasty) and jj peppers (they have topo Chico back in stock)

Big Thief ripped. They played a ton of unreleased stuff including a track they said they had never played in front of a crowd before which was sick. Everyone lost their minds for Spud Infinity which is funny for me as someone who spent quarantine watching shitty cell phone videos of Adrianne playing it solo online. Would vote this band most likely for me to go Grateful Dead mode on and follow on tour

Cut Copy last night. About 75% of the show ruled, the other 25% wasn't actively bad but some of the newer songs are just kind of boring. They only played about 80 minutes though which I didn't mind too much since it was a weeknight show but there's definitely a few songs that would have been nice to here if they played longer. "Let Me Show You Love" is way more of a banger live than I figured and was maybe the highlight of the night, though "Out There on the Ice" was fantastic as always too.
MMJ tonight, I'm pumped

Wish Cut Copy weren't playing Sun God That song is too damn long and it could be replaced by several other bangers like We Are Explorers or Free Your Mind

Big Thief was terrific on Monday night.
Pretty incredible that they just released an astoundingly good double-album and played even newer great material. "Once a Buncha Times" blew me away. Adrianne Lenker is John Prine now.

If I hadn’t seen them with regularity since the Capacity tour I might be a little annoyed that I’m not regularly seeing them play a big chunk of their catalogue that I love but I’ve seen them play pretty much all of their songs that I like so it’s always exciting to get some new stuff

Current health situation at my house means I can't go to the Big Thief show here on Friday night. I'm insanely bummed - probably my most anticipated show of the year.

I went to a show on a Wednesday night and I’m gonna write about it, dammit!
My nephew, whom a bunch of you know, asked me if I’d like to go to the Bottle to see VR Sex, Lunacy and some dj. Was unfamiliar with the acts, but decided to go with him.
8:30 show, we arrive 8:45 and there are about 30 people there. Around 9:05, the fog machines get turned on. I’m guessing the dj got canceled because there wasn’t enough money to pay him, because Lunacy comes out. He’s a shrouded and hooded figure who plays synth and layers muffled/distorted vocals over it. The best way I could describe it is that it would be what you would expect to hear in Jame Gumb’s basement. It was fine and lasted about 30 minutes.
VR Sex came on at about 10:15 which made ten15 happy, because I was prepared for bottle time to be in full effect. This is the side project of the front person from Drab Majesty, if that means anything to anyone. (Wretched - where y’at?). Their recorded stuff sounds like synth tunes you’d hear in 80’s or 90’s movies. Kinda goth-y, but definitely synth. Much to my surprise, they are a 4 piece plus singer live and they are much more rock band. Was a fun time and the 120 or so people that were there, myself included, enjoyed the 45 minute set. About 2/3 of the way thru, the singer made a comment like “Nothing shy about Chi-Town”. This was a mistake, and went over like a wet turd, or like he slathered a Vienna hot dog with ketchup, or something. But, then they started rocking again and all was forgiven.
Maybe 10 or so patrons were masked as were the employees. Home and in bed by 11:30 made for a good evening.

Maybe 10 or so patrons were masked as were the employees. similar experience for me at the bottle for vacation last week. maybe 120-150 people and 10-15 were masked. honestly, better than i expected. they added a last-minute opener who i missed. but the second band, exedo, comes out and the singer says "this is our first show." then the first two songs ripped. they sounded way too good for it to be a first show. but the rest of the set was a little more down to earth.

My Morning Jacket last night absolutely ruled. Met up with a guy I randomly met on a train in Phoenix going to Innings Fest, he had an MMJ shirt on and we struck up a conversation and turns out he also lived in Houston and also was going to this show. Ended up in a crew of MMJ superfans which made it more fun. Doors were at 530 due to a strict 10 PM curfew the venue has (outdoor in a neighborhood), got there around then and saw not many people were in at all so had a beer at the bar next door, walked in around 615, and ended up like second row which was wild. The crowd size was great, full enough to feel like there was a solid crowd but it wasn't super dense so actually had space around me. Madison Cunningham opened, made a point to watch her at suggestion of thebosma and that was a great decision, she was really, really good and she's definitely on my to listen to list now, I hadn't before. She only played 30 minutes and almost wish it was longer, though I get it with the curfew. MMJ went on right around 730 and opened with "Golden" which I don't think they've done all tour. Lots of good stuff to start the set, "Xmas Curtain" ruled, and "Love Love Love" is a much better live song than I expected it to be. "Steam Engine" was our long jam song and it also ruled, and then led into "Spring (Among the Living)" which I hadn't heard live before and was also way more of a force live than I thought it'd be. Great encore, including a super cool "Wordless Chorus" extended jam that I loved. I had tickets to all 3 Mission Ballroom NYE shows and I'm still a bit bummed that didn't happen but this was a really good setlist for me for a single show. Not sure if I'll get to catch them again on this tour but glad I caught them once.

Saw Be Your Own Pet do a warmup show a couple nights ago then open for Jack White last night, and they were fantastic both times. They hold the distinction of being the first band I saw at the first Lolla I went to (06) and that was the last time I saw them before Friday. For being gone 14 years and becoming adults since then, they really sounded on point. I dunno if this reunion will lead to more shows but if it does I definitely recommend going to see them.

Pretty good concert weekend for me. First on Saturday, I went to the Riv for Rita Sawayama. I first bought that ticket in 2020 to see her at Bottom Lounge. Some time last year, it got moved to Metro. Then they decided to get more cash, and moved it to the Riv. Ugh. Her performance was pretty good, as everyone who saw her on the Coachella webcast would agree, but it was one of those nights where the Riv was the worst venue in the city. All of the floor levels were packed, and no matter where you stood, someone taller was blocking your view. It sucked. Sound wasn't the greatest either.
The opener was a dj too whose idea of transitioning between tracks was to turn down the volume on the song A, then start playing song B. Plus between that dj set and the changeover music, I think I heard 4 Charli XCX songs all night. And that didn't even include the one Rina did with her.
After that, I got over to Lincoln Hall pretty quickly to see S. Carey. Venue was maybe a little more than half full, so at least there was breathing room. Set was good and chill, his encore was cover of "Picture in a Frame" by Tom Waits, so I was very happy.
Sunday was Lala Lala at the Garfield Park Conservatory. That was the first time I went to a show there, they really need to host more shows there. That was a great place for a show. FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: even though shows here are run by the Bottle, IT DOES NOT RUN ON BOTTLE TIME. I got there at 7 after they said it would start at 6:30, and I missed Forest Management. Oh well. Elton Aura was very good as the middle act, and Lala Lala played a really great set too.

I missed their Lolla show in 2006 because my uncle was taking a very long poop. Saw them the following year opening for Arctic Monkeys though

Leon Bridges fucking rocked tonight. Just as good as when I saw him on his first album tour. As much as I love the first record his live show really thrives in the funk/soul mimicry and is such a joy to see

Jason Isbell and Waxahatchee were both terrific last night. Isbell and Amanda Shires played some of the Georgia album covers. Waxahatchee did a really great Naomi Judd cover. It started to pour down rain with about 5 songs left in the Isbell set and I was able to get up to the 9th row. Fun night.

Gang of Youths were enjoyable last night at Metro. Setlist was very heavy on the new album, I think they maybe played 4 or 5 songs from Go Farther in Lightness. The new songs did sound good, but aren't quite as exciting live as some of the older songs should be. The lead singer stepped up his game, he really interacts with the crowd and looks around at everyone, alot like Sam from Future Islands. He looked right at me toward the end of the show and said he liked my Jimmy Eat World shirt that I was wearing.
I don't know though, I always picture them being a much more crazy or exciting band live than they are, I always expect the crowd to go bonkers during some of their old songs, but there is barely ever any pushing or anything. Still a good time anyways.
