Goose show #5 was my first since they euthanized Ben. I thought Cotter sounded more comfortable last night than he did on the first few shows of the tour that I heard. I couldn't believe the Wisteria jam but it was the highest I got all night so.

Fred Again was a blast. Great production and energy. Even if you are just a casual fun I’d recommend checking it out if you get the chance.

It's been a few years, but the shuttle experience getting there was fine. Getting back you need to be prepared for a late night unless you're staying in Fort Collins. I don't think we got home until 2am-ish.

There's a really cool marathon that goes by the venue that also employs a shuttle if you're into that sort of thing.

To clarify - I saw him at the arena here. Would have loved to gone to the Mish but it was a weeknight and I'm old. Also was at a funeral when tix went on sale and probably would have been impolite to pull my phone out during the service.

Saw Sum 41 last night because I've never seen them and this is their last tour so I thought I might as well bank them in the trapper. Wasn't expecting much but they were surprisingly good. Crowd was having a blast with the old songs, not so much with the new ones.

As a few mentioned, that Kacey/FJM/Nickel Creek triple bill was a killer show on Thursday! Night 3 of Goose at the shed was pretty epic! I thought night 1 was basically all killer no filler. Song wise, night 3 wasn’t my favorite, but they brought the jams! For a majority of the first set, Peter was fucking with Rick and kept prolonging the songs, it was pretty funny to watch.

I also thought the Kacey show was great, definitely the biggest production I've ever seen from her but I loved all of the things that made that big room feel small (notably the B stage and the procession around the arena). Very very cool and loved the setlist, too. I didn't catch all of FJM but looking forward to that new record.
Just a stunning evening at Bohemian National Cemetery last night. I've become super fond of Rosali/David Nance and Mowed Sound and was so excited to see Rose City Band - I have been thwarted every other time I've tried to see them and they were worth the wait. They jammed a lot more than I expected and while not all of the jams reached the highest heights, they were all pretty tasty and I loved the funkier bits.
What to say about Jessica Pratt. She is definitely a mood but it's generally not my mood. I would like to listen to her while sipping a pink squirrel at At Random in Milwaukee, and not really in any other circumstance. That said, the musicianship was top notch, really restrained and precise, and created such a bucolic atmosphere, but for me the chipmunk vocals just are not it.

Charly Bliss was really great at Bottom Lounge last night. They played pretty much every song from their new album through the set, so I’m always glad to see a band have faith in their new material like that. Not sure if they have gotten the same reception in every other city on this tour so far, but they seemed especially happy with how it was received here. They closed with a fun and surprisingly accurate cover of My Chemical Romance’s I’m Not Okay
Opener was a new act Raffaela that was alright, thought their drummer was really solid, but then realized it’s the drummer from Charly Bliss

Had a great time at the Bright Eyes show at Lincoln Hall. I haven't seen them since they played Urbana almost 15 years ago.
New songs sounded really good, old songs were obviously bangers, and Conor was only moderately hammered.
I chuckled when he said that this was his first time at LH, and he's always heard great things. He was here when Better Oblivion Community Center played.

Yeah, I thought Connor was actually sober to start the show, but I realized quickly that wasn't water he was sipping during the set. New songs did seem good though, better than their last album at least.
Neva Donova didn't do a lot for me. The band members passed around a flask during their set, may have been the first time I've seen that at a place with a fully stocked bar that I'm sure would give them whatever they wanted?

Also there were at least 3 people that I saw who either passed out or got carried out, which was strange because I didn't think it was a hot night out, it wasn't that hot in the room, and it's not like people were camping out to get in (I got there at 7:20 when doors were supposed to be at 7, and there were only like 20 people in line waiting for the doors to open)

Felt the same way about the Bright Eyes show. There were some really great stretches and some cringey moments for sure. I’m glad I was up for going and wasn’t among those that passed out.
I also thought Neva Dinova were pretty solid for a band that hasn’t existed in 15+ years.

Went to the Outlaw tour on Saturday. Bob sounded great. Loved the mix of straight-ahead rock/blues sound and quieter moments. Only my second time seeing him -- RARW show was tighter as an overall set and the setting was much better, but I thought the highs were higher this time.
Told myself I was just going to tune out chompers but couldn't help saying something when Bob began a really delicately accompanied A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. Glad I did because it went about as well as I could have hoped and that song was firmly my favorite part of the show. The crowd around me was mostly polite for Bob but quite a few people looking listless or scrolling phones. After the show one of the very drunk group I asked to quiet down thanked me for reminding her to live in the moment lol.
Other stuff: reworked Can't Wait was cool as hell, didn't recognize it at first. Seems like he's been playing harmonica less as the tour has gone on, but he did bust out a very simple and charming solo to close Under the Red Sky (!). And the covers were a great change of pace because he really locks into the melodies unlike on his own songs.
Left about halfway through Willie's set to beat the traffic, but damn his voice still sounds great and the crowd was eating out of his hand. Not a Mellencamp guy but he was fine. His voice was unrecognizably hoarse at first but he shook off some of the gravel as it went on.

had a pretty stellar few weeks of shows after a pretty quiet summer
Saw Brad Paisley at the new Hard Rock in Rockford. He did the entire State Fair show in the 1500 person glorified conference room, including video package and mascot appearance. just nonstop ripping and the hits for 200 die hard fans and 1200 people who had $80 and live in Rockford Illinois giving it a really surreal vibe. He brought out the troops, but did not bring out Rick Nelson who was there and reciprocated a fist bump in the casino before the show.
The William Basinski show at the Garfield Park Conservatory was great. Really liked Maria BC as well who I wasn't much familiar with, but wish the rest of the lineup had a bit more "live" stuff. Tyondai Braxton did the same set he did at Lampo last year which I found equally uninspired, but this time it pushed everything back 45 minutes befcause of surprise rain/moving inside. That said Basinski at 10pm in a humid plant room on a work day after roaming around for 5 hours kinda doubled down on the experience.
Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings was a hard show to beat for the year. Next level chemistry. Only thing better is maybe a Dave Rawlings Machine show.
Evanston Folk Fest was pretty fantastically run for a first year festival. Chill vibes, respectful crowds, 95% good sound/very little sound bleed. Was only there for a minute on saturday but sunday never seemed over crowded and parking/public transit was easy. Eating a shrimp cocktail while drinking a cbd seltzer and watching Bonnie Prince Billy on the lake is a pretty unbeatable way to spend a sunday sundown.
Willie Nelson/Bob Dylan Tour @ Tinley. was an all timer. Scored sick cheap seats day of. John Mellancamp was fucking terrible, at least not doing the gawdawful tom waits bullshit on this tour, but even the hits are excruciating. Bob sounded fantastic, and the Silvio/It aint me babe bust outs were a blast. Bob was playing keyboard way more than usual, and seemed to be really enjoying himself playing with Mickey. Was worried as above about chopmpers but it wasn't too bad. Willie put on the best set of the three times I've seen him, fully engaged, sounded fantastic and was really fucking ripping on guitar. I think having Waylon Payne up there instead of his kid (who I assume was touring with flaming lips or something?) gave him a bit more energy/added to the spontaneity a bit. Waylon just played some old country classics but willie sang along and played guitar to every one, in a way that seemed to even surprise the band a bit.
Pulp @ Aragon were great, high energy/varied setlist, sound was surprisingly good. But man do sold out shows at the Aragon suck ass (as stated above). was both a blessing and a curse that the 2nd encore cleared out a bit because on one hand got 3 songs of an amazing view with amazing sound and on the other hand got to see what I was missing having to watch the show from the balcony thru two random pillars. Also I suffered a concussion right before they got on stage from a medic not looking as he brought one of those chair table things thru the crowd over his head and smacking me and not stopping or saying sorry or whatever.
49 Winchester are just a really next level live country act, no pretense, just jam after jam. First time seeing them @ bowery ballroom and it was night 2 of a 2 night run so it was a bit deeper setlist wise than I needed (find their first two albums 30% too trampled by turtles for me) but otherwise no complaints. Chicago country crowds def have chud energy but NYC is really unmatched, everyone there looked like stock broker Morgan Wallen and was actively in a fight with their girlfriend. Doso also got me incredibly drunk on double vodka sodas. The opener did a tribute to 9/11 as it was on 9/11 and it was one of the more uncomfortable moments I can remember at a concert in recent memory.
The Killers @ Forest Hills Stadium, another first time show. Night 2 of 2 but in this case the setlist was just banging. Saw some reddit chatter that it was their best show in years and believe it. Forest Hills is a really cool venue in its way of making a not particularly intimate space seem intimate. Sunday show sold poorly so they dropped tix 50% (which meant I could go) but also meant it was pretty chatty, but never in the salt shed zone of chomper death. Winner was the guy in the "Make America Great Again" hat taking selfies in front of the yeah yeah yeah's car. loser was getting (mild) food poisoning from Times Square margaritaville

i've been to 59 shows at lincoln hall and i'm pretty sure last night was the only time i've seen two people knocked out in a pit. those KOs unfortunately bookended a really good speed set. the band sounded tight. the crowd was bonkers. my view from the balcony with other olds was excellent.
edit: i remember when lincoln hall would have both doors open for sold out shows. main door was will call A-M, north door was will call N-Z. they opened the north door well past when doors opened and the dolt who was supposed to be handing out wristbands as the line stretched around the back alley but was instead just talking to her friends kept yelling "we have both doors open. figure it out yourselves." not the best experience getting in there with that nonsense.

Does Michael Johnston still have ownership interests in the place? Won't consider going back to Schubas / Lincoln Hall unless and until after he's gone.

I would have liked to have heard one or two more off of S/T personally but it's a new album tour so not much room to mess around. The band is awesome but yeah you don't hire Jason Falkner if you're not gonna have him do most of the heavy guitar work.
The crowd at the Metro was more respectful than any I've seen in a while. You could hear a pin drop during the quiet parts. The venue was actually great about turning off the huge fans when it got quiet too.

The Offspring aren't much of a draw for me these days, mostly because I've seen them so many times over the last 30 years and they don't really have anything new that I care about (would love to get an Ignition album play one day). With that said, seeing them at the Metro was enough to draw me in. Dexter must have lost at least 50 lbs since I last saw them, I wouldn't be surprised if he's on the Ozempic bandwagon. Noodles is still sporting the same beer belly. They ripped through an hour long greatest hits set, although they did sneak in their latest forgettable single. It was great seeing them in such a small room, and Q101 didn't give away enough tickets to fill Metro so it was very comfortable on the main floor. I don't think a single person passed out, here's hoping I can say the same again after tonight.
