This is mainly a review of the Premium seating at Salt Shed, an accidental purchase on my part. I thought the show was good but not great? But maybe that was because I was stuck in the Premium seating. What a hive of rich asshole chompers and casuals - about a half hour in I heard someone ask a waitress what time Sturgill was supposed to go on. Just a lot of people yapping and taking selfies, it was rough. Unless you got there early enough to be on the balcony railing, you couldn't really see shit and as you got closer to the stage the stage was obscured by the house right screens. I found a little spot on the barrier between Premium and VIP and had a decent side stage view when the VIP folks weren't on that rail, but I couldn't see Robby Crowell at all. They did have those uncomfortable little industrial metal stools if you wanted to sit and could find one. I did not partake in any of the ~custom cocktails~ for fear of losing my spot and not being able to see the stage at all. Expedited entry was nice as I got there a little late but I wouldn't say it made an appreciable difference in the overall experience. A Good Look ripped, Call to Arms ripped, Premium seating did not rip and is not worth nearly double (!) the regular ticket price.

My review of the first two nights of Sturgill-Palooza:
Saw Miles Miller at Space on Monday. Laur was sitting in with him and apparently had just learned all the songs earlier in the day? Miles has a really cool voice and the songs are mostly good, but Jesus Laur can play. A few funny events from the show:
-Miles was telling a story about a friend's intellectually disabled brother. You can tell he had to stop himself from saying the R word because he goes "i wanna say this without sounding stupid but he was... Mentally impaired"
-Miles is talking a bunch between some songs about how all his songs are about his past relationships and exes and he says something to the effect of "it's material, what the hell else am I gonna write about." A few songs later, he says it's the biggest crowd he's ever played an acoustic set for and immediately some woman yells "No it's not!" And starts talking about how she saw him at some fest. And he's like "well I mean acoustic" and she keeps talking and finally she just goes "you have big crowds, that's all I'm saying. I'd love to be one of your exes." And I just fucking lost it.
Miles ended the set by telling the crowd he has no merch but would love to get with everyone after. He's a braver man than I am because you know that lady took him up on it.
Sturgill was great I thought and left a lot of meat on the bone for tonight show, Jesus willing I get one of these production hold releases. Crowd mostly respectful. However, there was a very annoying lady talking over songs when she wasn't loudly singing off key. She had a poster tube on and sounded so much like the woman from the Miles Miller show that I am convinced two separate people this annoying couldn't possibly exist. no offense to anyone who buys posters but definitely obsessive fan behavior so I'm convinced. It was her.

based on these posts, i am thankful that i endured minimal chomping last night. the one guy next to me spent about a third of the show looking at previous setlists on his phone trying to predict to his buddy what was still to come.

we were close enough to the stage that the chomping did bug me too much but salt shed outdoors is genuinely the worst concert venue in America and Id rather see a band I like at a sold out Aragon 10/10

I actually really love the Salt Shed it's just the country crowds there (TTC, Turnpike, now Sturgill) that suck.

Also pro Shed. I had probably the most viscerally negative reaction to any venue I've had this year at Pulp so not co-signing that ridiculous Aragon take above.
I think if you go front left at Salt Shed you avoid the dipshits. Exception this time obviously for the insane woman who is determined to ruin the shows this week.

my hot take is salt shed outdoors is better than salt shed indoors.

I don't think that's such a hot take. Still have yet to find a decent sightline indoors (except for front left)

I usually think grandstand tickets are for losers but salt shed's seats are genuinely great. Super comfy. The only show coming up I'd pay grandstand money for is Nick Cave and I wanna be as close as possible for that so no point.

Yeah those seats are super comfy, I'm hard pressed to think of a show I'd like to doze off in them for though.

Sturgill was great I thought and left a lot of meat on the bone for tonight show, every time i go to one night of a multi-show stand the other show has the better setlist. i cannot remember the last time that didn't happen. tonight is going to have every song i wanted to hear last night, guaranteed.

That's why you gotta be a real sicko and go every night. the last two times I felt setlist fomo was Pearl Jam and MMJ last year. MMJ particularly annoying as I went two of the three nights.

I swear to doge I’ll lose my mind if people are chompin’ at Sturgill next week.
Also, I’ve stupidly paid for Premium/VIP Balcony twice in the past eight years and both times it suuuuuuucked, mostly because it was harder to see the performers than if I just stood in the rear of the main floor (Irving Plaza and Webster Hall).

We'll get Water in a Well, Turtles and Red Red Wine tonight so that's already good.

Forest Hills Stadium. The upper sections seem to have tons of seats available. I probably would have done GA, but Mrs. Doso doesn’t really do GA if she can avoid it. We have a pair of seats with backs (there are ~500 of those; the majority of the seating is metal bleachers).

Its a beautiful setting and I’m psyched to see a show there so late in the season. And they have a strict 10pm curfew so despite being in Queens I’m always home by 11:30ish. Side notes: looks like it’s the only tour date with an opener (Durand Jones). Looks like he goes on at 6pm leaving Sturgill to start at 7pm if he’s going to do the three hour thing. Also I looked at your dates to see when he’s playing in Paris and noticed that the two nights in Boston are sold out which seems weird but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

More repeats than I wanted but overall I thought this was the better of the two nights of Sturgill. I heard someone finally went postal on the chompers but sadly I missed it

Fontaines DC show was terrific last night. Just kind of marveling at how much this band has improved since an already great experience back in 2021. Really glad I caught them at Gothic because I don't see a way they're not playing Red Rocks next time through. Been Stellar were an incredible opener as well.
Also that's the longest line I've seen to get into a show in Denver. Glad I decided to get there a bit early.

Justice was incredible. One of the best productions I’ve ever seen. I've been waiting for the secondary market to drop on their Hollywood Bowl show tomorrow but the cheapest ticket is still in the triple digits before fees. Pretty bummed to probably miss it.

Night 2 of Sturgill was my favorite of the two, very much enjoyed it. The experience (in terms of sightlines and chompers) was much better on the floor and I am pleased to report that Robbie Crowell is fully giving Jeff Lynne. The China Cat tease basically made my night but I feel they are not a jam band just yet - some of the jams get into this krauty motorik groove which can be a nice space-out, but especially when used as a transition between songs there were times when it felt like an unnecessarily extended vamp and it was like ok get on with it then. I would like them to do a bit more melodically in some of those instances. I also feel like a true jam band would have switched up the setlist more - that said, 39 songs over the course of two nights with 10/25 unique songs on the second night isn't half bad (please feel free to check my math) (edit: just did, oops)

Yard Act was fantastic tonight. Honestly a 50%-75% full Metro might be the best venue in Chicago

Outset is pretty cool. I don't know what % sold the Grateful Shred show was but it seemed like the sightlines were pretty good all over and I have no complaints about the sound. I like the patio too but they need a taco truck or something for all the stoned wooks during set break. Drinks definitely a splurge. Bud Light like $15 after tip.

Vampire Weekend were largely fantastic at their MSG matinee show yesterday. We missed the Billy Joel cover band that opened b/c I guess the went on right when doors opened at 11:30am. Had a nice bibimbap before the show tho and was in the venue by 12:50 or so. The Brothers Macklovitch (A-Trak + Dave 1 from Chromeo) were doing a DJ set, aka mostly dancing on a platform to late 90s - early 00s NYC hip hop bangers. Watching the Chromeo guy dressed like a coked out Christopher Moltisanti dance to Dipset was a good time tho.
VW sounded great, and I thought all the OGWAU tracks really stood out. While I still don't love it, that record has grown on me a bunch over the summer. I missed them in 2019, so I was stoked to get all the FOTB tunes I love (Harmony Hall, elongated Sunflower, This Life, Hold You Now as the opener). And the back catalogue was great too, of course. Ezra was really hamming it up as a showman. For better (singing "Mary Boone" from the crowd) or for worse (his weird tent preacher schtick during the infamous "Cocaine Cowboys" medley). Speaking of which, yeah that needs to be retired. Fun as it is to hear them riff on "Possum" at MSG, the whole thing truly took the wind out of the crowd's sails. 10+ minutes in the middle of an otherwise brisk 2 hour main set was just too much.
The covers gimmick at the end was fine too. Honestly the best one they did was "Santeria". Brandon Flowers recorded a request for "Mr Brightside" that played over the jumbotron, but Ezra didn't know most of the lyrics? Paired with the CC medley, the covers got quite grating by the end, and I was relieved when they went back into VW songs to close the show.
Overall good! Glad I finally caught them on this tour, but I'm all good on that front for another 4-5 years or so.
Edit: Also, it was wild to be walking out of a 2.5 hour MSG show at 4:00pm. More bands should do Sunday matinees!

It looked like there was a ton of inventory for that show. Did they close off the 200 level and bring everyone down to the 100s?
