I thought that's what was going to happen.
It's that preferential ballot.

I actually thought the preferential ballot would favor Roma I didn't think that would happen because it was up for and ended up winning foreign language. I was thinking it might get dragged way down by people who didn't want it to win both categories.

Worse awards decision of the year: Green Book getting Best Picture or Harold Baines getting in the Hall of Fame?

Green Book isn't nearly as bad as most of you make it out to be, but there definitely was better flicks this year.

Green Book isn't nearly as bad as most of you make it out to be, but there definitely was better flicks this year. green book is very competently made, features a fantastic mahershala ali performance, and a hilariously over the top italian impression from viggo moretensen. the hope was the changes they've made to the academy in recent years would reward a better film. unfortunately, we're gonna have to wait at least another year.

I liked Green Book a lot. I'm just glad it didn't go to a movie that I hate.

Next year they should have an award for best Oscars outrage. It would go to the event that generates the most angry #socialmedia takes. Lot of good contenders this year.

Guys what is happening on this page. Green Book might be one of the worst movies ever made. It wasn't even one of the worst movies of this year, by far...

Didn't get to watch the show this year, but I'm super fucking happy for Olivia Colman.

It's an incredibly well realized movie, which makes it more insidious. Not really the fault of Ali or Viggo but its wild and not surprising at all to see it awarded a top prize

I ended up passing out (fucking jet lag) about an hour into the show. Probably for the best.

A big narrative this year is that the film Bohemian Rhapsody has reminded people about how Queen is great, but it's really made me like them much much less it's made my nostalgia for growing up with Queen feel kinda less meaningful after seeing the other 3 guys in the band revel in a movie that pretty much villianizes Freddie, his sexuality, and also just casually mentions the diagnosis. and that's before we even talk about how bad of a movie it is on its own and how much little of a shit the writers gave when trying to shoe-horn in their favorite songs with no context. so yeah im with you. i grew up loving everything about Queen and now i kinda just roll my eyes when i hear commercials that are trying to ride the hype coattails.

Between this movie and Adam Lambert, I really don't think very highly of the rest of the guys in Queen. Seems like they just want to get paid.

There was a lot to love. Some really great performances, and everything with the black student union was fantastic. The biggest problems were that 1. The entire film is attempting to create a dichotomy between the police as an institution and people of color. Characters in the film argue about this and then essentially the film decides that this is not a serious enough problem to be considered, and that there's a third "middle" option of doing absolutely nothing about the implicit racism in the system. It's frustrating because it both creates and shuts down the conversation and ends with "maybe the cops aren't racist" when there's plenty of issues with the institution as a whole. It denies the main message it's trying to present. 2. The idea that all racists are dumb rednecks is harmful because it prevents people from pointing out real systemic racism that occurs in places like government and higher education, both areas with plenty of well educated, racist people. There's a lot more racists out there than the film recognizes and it sucks. These two things really upset me to the point of not enjoying the film, especially with the ending that it has, pushing an emotional payoff that it didn't earn. I'm not a fan of the whole "referencing donald trump in every form of media" idea either but that's more of a screenwriting problem that's fixable. Fair enough

Spotify has their own award show now, which confirms that corporations are people too
