This thread is for anything and everything Grateful Dead related. To start this off, I just started watching Long Strange Trip, because it seems like fun. How many GD shows, or some iteration of the band (Further, Dead and Co, The Dead, etc.) have you guys been to? I've personally only seen one, Further, but it was my first concert ever!

Low key excited to spend a weekend at alpine this summer since it’s a friend’s birthday. I should probably figure out how to get tickets though

I’m considering the alpine valley shows. Looks like it’ll be a lot of fun.

I want to see Dead & Co again but I really don't want to go back to Alpine again.
It sounds like the latter is gonna win out on this one.

I’ve never been. Is it bad?

The venue itself is fine for a huge shed, but it's such a pain in the ass to get to. I know I'm probably not going to get a lot of sympathy from you having to constantly travel from Peoria.

I mean, going to a show for me comes with the expectation of travel. If most shows were a quick train ride or an Uber away from me I’d be pretty annoyed at driving into WI as well haha

Actual dad saw the actual Dead about 85 times by his own estimation. My mom is in the 50-60 range.
But I don't think I've ever heard Genghis mention them so it caught me off guard haha

genghis has a crazy hard drive of almost all the shows if I recall correctly.
I only saw the Dead (2009 version), Ratdog, Furthur, the Dead (2015 version with Trey) and Dead & Co (2016).
Fun fact I had a ticket for the real Grateful Dead's last show at Alpine but my mom wouldn't let me go. So I never saw Jerry.

Further was really the coolest first concert experience for a lot of reasons, but walking down shakedown street as a 15 year old getting offered healing crystals, having an old hippie explain the history of the band to me, and someone describing to me how he was “tripping some serious fucking sack” was pretty magical and I don’t know if I can ever replicate that feeling.

First time catching them was the Sunday 2015 show with Trey. Have seen D&C a few times since. I'm hoping Reggie's runs a bus up there this year. I do not want to deal with camping or driving out of that parking lot.

Listening to these ‘72 Europe shows for the first time since I was 14. Holy shit did they sound great. I have a handful of these CDs that I’m gonna have to dig out of my parent’s house. What are everyone’s fave shows?

What are everyone’s fave shows? I listened to Vol 20 last night and it is super hot front to back. It's a pretty good showcase for Pigpen, who I think deserves more credit as a general matter.

Pigpen only flies under the radar because he died before the 77 run, I think. It’s really too bad because you’re right, he’s spectacular.

So if one wanted to finally start listening to this band...how should they go about it? Ayyy this was me like 6 months ago. My path went like this, and I think it's a pretty solid way to go: 1.) 5/8/77 at Cornell University - this is accepted to be the show that most epitomizes one of the best eras of the Dead (Spring 1977) 2.) Europe 72 - I'm listening to the 17 track version on Spotify rn, it rules. 3.) Start picking and choosing wherever you like. My favorite shows have been: 10/9/76 in Oakland; 10/19/73 in Fairgrounds, Oklahom; 11/5/77 in Rochester; 4/30/77 at Palladium; 3/27/88 at Hampton; 7/8/78 at Red Rocks; 5/24/72 in London; the Spring 1990 album. Some notes: - Sometimes when I'm bored I'll just google a song that catches my ear, and see what one of the (several) Dead message boards say is their favorite version of it. That's how I found the epic version of "Franklin's Tower" on 10/9/76 - The Closing of the Winterland and Live / Dead albums are also well-regarded touchstones. - The studio stuff is pretty great too! I had several of their "greatest hits" like Casey Jones, Touch of Grey, Sugar Magnolia, Eyes of World, Ripple, Box Of Rain, Uncle John's Band, Truckin', etc. on my iPod from hearing them on classic rock radio as a teen. But there are other album gems like "Unbroken Chain" and "Terrapin Station" that fuckin' rule. Hope this all helps and isn't too overwhelming! I've taken my time with all of these, basically listening at my own pace over the last 6-7 months. They've pretty much become my favorite band in that span tho, so there's a lot to love here.

As usual monastery has given a well-researched and thought out response, and I for sure agree with his points 1 and 2, though I would maybe switch them? I dunno, you could also listen to American Beauty front to back to start out since that gives you a lot of the great tracks you hear live later. Worth noting everyone gets into this band a little differently but they have a lot of great material.
Some favorite shows of mine:
2/14/1968 8/27/1972 2/15/1973 12/31/1974 (closing of Winterland, as previously mentioned) 12/31/1976 (this is a bit of a hot take in deadhead communities as this show gets a lot of hate but I think it's wonderful) 5/22/1977(first show I listened to!) both the July 4th shows in Philly, I think that's 85 and 87 but I don't remember off the top of my head 3/25/1990 (best recording of Greatest Story Ever Told)

Best set on Spotify is the Oklahoma show. If you’re looking for “official” releases or whatever Europe 72 and steal your face are where to go
Studio album wise, American beauty, wake of the flood, and from the mars hotel are what you’ll wanna catch
Alady and the late genghis May choose to chime in
