Now That's What I Call Music!

Welcome to a new summer series of brackets where we'll revisit the classic '90s-'00s compilation series, "Now That's What I Call Music!" to determine which song you would definitively be talking about if you exclaimed, "Now THAT'S what I call music!"

Here's how it works: we'll do a small series of shootout brackets for each volume of the compilation from 1-8. The winning track of each compilation will move on to the 'Elite 8;" then we'll bracket off the winning 8 tracks to see what we call music.

FAQ:

Q: Why the first 8 volumes?
A: It gets us a decent sample size of songs to face-off at the end. Four seemed too few. Also, the comps start to get a little meh past 8. We're dealing primarily with '98-'01 chart-toppers for the record.

Q: How are the songs seeded?
A: They are seeded completely randomly by a computer. I don't love this, but trying to seed them by highest-charting position doesn't work because a ton of these songs hit #1. There aren't many other objective metrics I care to use and this is silly enough. Don't worry about it!

Q: Why are you doing this?
A: I am a bored masochist

Q: Now, what do you call music?
A: That's what we're going to find out.

We've reached the semi-finals of the first four volumes!

Thank you to everyone who has played along so far. Revisiting some of these songs has been fun, and we have another four volumes to go in August before we hit the true finals.

I know it is a lot of threads, so an additional thank you to everyone for putting up with the fatigue of seeing these pop up again and again.

Exciting times lie ahead with where we're at in the Now polls, so I thought I'd give a quick status update. We're pretty dang close to the end!

After today's polls, each of the 8 compilations will be down to their final match-up.

Tentative Post-Season Schedule
Tuesday, 8/20: Now 1-4 Finals

Wednesday, 8/21: Now 5-8 Finals

Monday, 8/26: Now - Elite 8

Tuesday, 8/27: Now - Final 4

Thursday, 8/29: Now - Championship Round



I'll update the first post of this thread with placeholders for the winners of each comp so they can enjoy their day in the sun. I'll also post each individual comp's bracket when we're finished so everyone can enjoy all the data/matchups. What a ton of fun/threads this has been.

*Elite 8 Update: Once we had finalists, I assigned each track an arbitrary 'seed' correlated to its compilation volume. I ran the 8 seeds through a randomizer to get an order. Although it somewhat resembles actual-seeded matchups, the order of the tracks was completely random.
