Inspired in part by the debate over Coachella's support of homophobic organizations, this thread is for general discussion of LGBTQ+ representation in popular culture.

Starting the discussion with this: What queer artists are currently at the festival-headlining level in 2018? Halsey is probably getting there? Miley Cyrus, I guess?

Gaga isn't queer as far as I'm aware of but she's definitely had the audience for it. Not sure if that counts. But yeah, not a whole lot of representation at the top

St. Vincent.
I think the wave of acceptance and commitment to putting forward queer artists should pay off at the headliner level in the coming years. female artists are certainly coming into that level finally after festival headliners previously being mostly male.

Why is Gaga less valid than Halsey or Miley? Honest question She's not; Gaga and Halsey are both openly bisexual women and Miley identifies as pansexual and nonbinary.

Out of curiosity, does this information change anyone's (especially those going) thoughts on supporting Coachella?

It'd be different if it was Paul Tollet but the guy who owns the company that runs the festival, among other things, makes this difficult.
Have fun going to concerts and boycotting AEG.

If you're boycotting Coachella over this you might as well boycott the whole country / world. To quote Alady: Burn it down. You’d have to boycott every AEG entity. It’s easy to hit at Cochella but most of these articles fail to mention the mass of other holdings they have.

ahem. Do you remember what it was like when Halford came out? There was this huge backlash in the metal community (also, homophobia in metal is a great topic for this thread) and I still remember the exact words of this guy they interviewed on MTV News at the time, saying it was just a publicity stunt: "I think it's disgusting, it's all for publicity. What's he doing now, industrial? Where it's acceptable to be gay, or to be weird." edit: Also, one of my favorite things ever is the fact that the standard leather-and-chains metal-guy "uniform" largely came from Halford, who was in turn imitating gay leather-daddy culture.

yep. protesting coachella because its parent's parent's parent company's ceo is a shithead is to pick convenient cherries regarding the vast majority of powerful white dudes in america and that easily fit the "well im not going to coachella anyway" narrative.

Can the LGBTQ members of this board just use this thread as a replacement for the Hubba Hubba thread / whatever the ladies one was called? Cause TR/ST's most recent press photo... swoon.

well i was born in 89 and i think he came out in 88, so. It was more like '98, because the guy in that interview was talking about the then-recent 2wo album Voyeurs. (That album should've been bigger than it was, too.)

But also I guess we can talk about real issues in the community too. im down for that. speaking of, i was just told by a coworker that i need remove another coworker from facebook asap because he saw my pic of my bf and i and he's "very judgmental." (i'm not removing him. he can deal with it and remove me if he wants and if he brings it up im just gonna keep talking about it until he leaves)

(That album should've been bigger than it was, too.) oh wow. no i didn't realize that. tbh i've never read/listened to his interviews regarding his sexuality and i definitely should. i just remember it coming up at some point when i first started listening to JP and thinking it was awesome that someone in metal was willing to come out and be so open about it.
