"Hey tweet, why is this poll a thing?"
"Well, the record shop I live by is selling a t-shirt with their logo as the modern lovers logo, and I listened to a lot of Big Star this weekend"
"Oh, ok, cool"

Have never knowingly heard a Big Star song and have never heard of the Modern Lovers period. What even is this?
EDIT: Ha. Got an answer above, thanks Bird.

Gotta go with Big Star on this one, but I love the Modern Lovers too. Big Star just has more songs that I adore - Thirteen, September Gurls, Kanga Roo, etc.

The Modern Lovers. That first album of theirs is excellent.
I like some Big Star, but the critical gushing over them makes me roll my eyes.

From my observations, Big Star's #1 is oddly up there with Metallica/Stones in shirts that are constantly worn by roadies (Naked Raygun is up there in Chicago too). So Big Star, easy.
More seriously, both bands fill that critical adored, publicly ignored niche. Hard to measure the reaches of their influence - as both can be heard all over the indie-sphere. But IMO Big Star has the best song, "Thirteen" - Modern Lovers have the best record - but with Big Stars 2 great records, one solid record - they have the best overall discography. Big Star gets my vote.

"Road Runner" is one of the all-time greatest recordings. "Government Center", "Astral Plane", "Pablo Picasso" and "I'm Straight" are up there, too. But Modern Lovers basically have one record and it's not even 100% great through and through. I'm assuming we're not counting Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers discography here, but even if we are, I've yet to hear anything after that first record that ever moved me.
#1 Record and Radio City, while not flawless, are generally superb and stacked with excellent tunes (including multiple all-timers like "Ballad of El Goodo", "September Gurls", "Thirteen" and "I'm in Love with a Girl"). Third/Sister Lovers is majorly flawed, but still has some great moments.
Big Star forever. I'm in love; what's that song?

Ooh forgot how much I loved "I'm In Love With A Girl" Also blows my mind that that Modern Lovers record has Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads on piano/organ and David Robinson of the Cars on drums.

Big Star all day. I was at SXSW the year Alex Chilton died (we were planning to see him there) and there was a lovely tribute put together at the last minute. This is one of my favorite moments from the rehearsals:

"Road Runner" is one of the all-time greatest recordings. Greatest 2-chord rock song ever?

this poll is all about the yr 1987. saw jonathan richman and the modern lovers at holstein's in January [only show I ever saw at Holstein's, which I think was on Lincoln Ave. near Webster] and Alex Chilton at Cubby Bear in the late fall of the yr [Cubby Bear was programmed by Sue Miller Tweedy after she had programmed the West End on Armitage and Racine, but before she and Julia bought Lounge Ax].

"Road Runner" is one of the all-time greatest recordings. Greatest 2-chord rock song ever? Pretty much - they do get nuts and slyly throw in a third chord (the fifth) right after the "Road runner once, road runner twice" break.
