i got to see the killing of a sacred deer and it was so good and weirdly wonderful and brutal. yorgos does it again. this one feels a little more dogtooth to me, but in reality is probably just a great blend of the lobster and dogtooth sensibilities.

I saw Wonder Woman and it was okay. There's a pretty solid stretch in the middle, but the beginning is kind of generic and clunky with exposition and then the last twenty minutes is an actual dumpster. I wish this movie wasn't attached to the DCEU because I feel like there was pressure to add slo-mo and very bad CGI explosion battles in order to match the BvS aethetic.

Yeah main criticism has been the last 20 minutes or so. It's a shame that DC can't get a big climactic fight scene down yet.

Like, if you cut out the big boss fight, there still seems to be a fitting resolution to WW's origin arc. Really baffling.

haven't seen wonder woman yet but I honestly wish more superhero movies would buck the whole we have to have a big baddie and big final fight trope

I actually thought Civil War split the difference pretty well. The 'big baddie' was just a dude manipulating them all, but then we got an above-average fight scene between Cap and Iron Man.
That's the only example I can think of, though. I agree with you for sure on the rest of them.

The end battles in DC generally don't even make much sense. It's just looks like an excuse to spend the rest of the special effects budget. Everything is sped up and it's hard to follow what's going on. I was in the minority thinking that BvS was not completely awful, but that end scene with Doomsday is impossible to defend.

Man of Steel is still the only one I've seen, and that climax just sooooo bad.

Oh I forgot to mention the very important detail that my local theater was showing Wonder Woman in 70 fucking mm lol. First time I'd seen something that CGI-heavy on film and I'm honestly not sure why I spent the premium. Everyone, go see Wonder Woman! Just don't spend that much on it!

well, the movie was shot on super 35, so that's kind of cool.

First time I'd seen something that CGI-heavy on film and I'm honestly not sure why I spent the premium. Everyone, go see Wonder Woman! Just don't spend that much on it! On a related note, when I saw Wonder Woman last week I accidentally bought a ticket to see it in "Dolby Cinema", which I didn't even know existed before then. Turned out to be really awesome. The screen is supposed to be sharper than a normal movie theater screen, and I think the quality actually was significantly better. And most noticeably, they had many more speakers than a normal theater... the movie was literally two or three times louder than a normal movie, which made the actions scenes sound totally crazy. You could feel the sound coming from different directions at different parts of the movie, and it was so loud the chairs were almost rattling (I know that sounds like it might be too much but once you became immersed after a few minutes it was pretty cool). Anyway, I would definitely pay to see another big action movie in that format. It was a cooler experience than IMAX in my opinion.

Did not have any luck with movies this weekend
The Girl With All of the Gifts - quaint zombie-like flick, that just made me want to play The Last of Us again. Nothing special about it, and according to the gf, the book was better.
La La Land - Neither of us saw what all of the fuss was about with this. Acting was decent, set design, music, all of that was just fine. But the story's been told a million times, so it didn't keep us interested. Different strokes I guess.
Fences - This was a chore to get through. I'm usually a fan of plays being translated to screen, but this was so dialogue heavy that it was exhausting. More power to Viola and everyone who had to work with Denzel on this one, b/c I can see it being a very mundane production.
Guess I'm getting old, b/c indie films used to do it for me, now I'm just find them to be tepid.

I watched Doctor Strange this weekend. It kind of annoyed me how quickly they blazed through an explanation of his powers and how he was able to master everything so quickly, but otherwise I enjoyed it.

I really did not enjoy It Comes At Night... I'm a little surprised at the raves it's received. Technically it is a well-made movie but god damn was it a slog. Ninety minutes of these families looking pained and tired and bored, and everything about the construction of the movie made me feel that way, too. So, good job, I guess?

film blogs i follow have been posting about it nonstop, but every single person i've spoken to about it either doesnt like it or thought it was fine. guessing it'll fade out now since word of mouth doesn't seem like it's gonna help it and its box office was rather middling.

I saw My Cousin Rachel this weekend with ended up being really middle of the road. I didn't have huge expectations but it was really slow and had very little going for it I thought. Hoping to see It Comes at Night this week though

Free Fire wasn't bad. not nearly as funny as it could've been though. i was expecting an over the top amount of british humor and absurdity and it kinda just turned into Smoking Aces part 3.
Belko Experiment was about as predictably meh as you can expect from a "fuck corporatism" style Battle Royal ripoff. it had some interesting turns but nothing worth remembering.
War Machine was enjoyable and funnier than expected.

this movie was fascinating. more about the legacy of the jonbenet ramsey murder on people in boulder than the murder itself, and really a cool look at people in small towns.
