Alien franchise is legit one of the best even the bad ones have some quality. And this includes Prometheus. And AVP!

I think the only one I can't stand is Alien vs Predator because I wanted so much more from it. i initially hated avp but did a rewatch last year and if you can like, get into the groove of what its trying to do (national treasure meets the thing and it's dark) then it is kind of sick

Also, like probably many of you, I'm on a bunch of mailing lists that are sending out lists of movie recommendations lately. This movie was on one of them, and I watched it on Amazon last night. WAY better than I expected. Glad I gave it a chance. ![](https://assets.nflxext.com/us/boxshots/hd1080/70118364.jpg) this RUUUULES i love this movie so much

I have only seen Alien, Aliens, and Prometheus, I think. Pretty sure I was warned off of 3 by somebody on here.

![](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/A1azRwllBjL._SY550_.jpg) i'm watching these movies out of order, but i liked this one. it was fun to gameplan joe's next move. although, maybe i would feel differently if i had seen Yojimbo before. i figure now i need to add that to my quarantine list. one of my biggest takeaways is that marty mcfly must've been a big fan.

man, Fury Road gets better every time i watch it. just a crazy good movie front to back
also revisited Stay for the first time in forever and wow that movie actually holds up really well and is insanely well thought out -- especially surprising in the context of knowing what the director and writer went on to do after (Quantum of Solace and Game of Thrones, respectively)

Verhoeven Rankings 1. Turk Fruit 2. Wat Zien Ik 3. Soldaat van Oranje - You can see what Spielberg found so appealing here. It's in ways a standard issue WW2 film, but is transgressive and aware enough to zag when you think its going to zig, and contains some truly knock out moments like the picture below, which is kind of what you want out of a their dstar wars movie. Making a WW2 film about the good bad and evil that avoids sentimentality without avoiding emotion. And the scope is so grand on what I have to assume is a low budget. However its still just a little too safe for me to out and out love but I could see that being different if I actually saw it on a screen that isn't a laptop. ![](https://images.justwatch.com/backdrop/10037748/s1440/soldier-of-orange) 4. Verhoeven Rankings 1. Turk Fruit 2. Wat Zien Ik 3. Soldaat van Oranje 4. Septters - This feels so directly like a response to Soldier of Orange's success as much as it does a film in its own right. Taking a fairly straight forward coming of age story and filling it with hate crimes, homoeroticism, fucking and weird violence as a kind of fuck you to the success of his other movies, and than I guess it didn't work and everyone still went to go see it in the Netherlands so he had to leave but it's worth a watch. ![](https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OQpGQ2rzPss/VOmzE7gC9rI/AAAAAAAXIH0/dH1HEzrz9zA/s280/Spetters-1980-MSS-2222.jpg) 5. In all reality, Trolls: World Tour is probably the best music festival we're going to get this year.

Was gonna watch Everyone Else but Criterion was down so we put on Miami Blues (on Vudu for free with Blues Clues ads) which was pretty sick. Then Criterion came back but it was pretty late to read subtitles so we watched This Magic Moment the Shaq/Penny Hardaway doc. Great night of getting in touch with Florida culture.

man Kurosawa's Ran is still like the best thing ever. the special edition one i found is so many *chef's kisses* also Zhang Yimou's Shadow is still fucking immaculate. back to thinking it should've been my #1 last year lol and then we watched The Platform. and...ehhhh idk. the politics of it were obvious going in but it still has the audacity to bash you over the head with the message every 5 minutes. the torture aspect of it is kinda interesting but the second half kinda undoes it all. by the end nothing really seems to matter. didn't love it

I watched the first half hour of Femme Fatale last night and it was absolutely sick. Just wholly preposterous but insanely sick.
other watches last night -- Thief - a relative of mine in this movie but somehow I'd never seen it. Idk how to say this but as a real italian he also helped Michael Mann in a ummm... consultative capacity with some of technical aspects of the trade. Anyhow, this movie was really great and it's hard to believe this could be Michael Mann's debut. It kind of reminded me of a proto-Drive but I think it's more psychologically perceptive The Grifters - This is super well acted but i thought it was a little confused as to whether it wanted to be one of those breezy SoCal crime flicks they knocked out every six months during the 90s or if it wanted to really dive into the icky Oedipal psychological stuff. I suppose it could do both but the balance never felt right to me. Probably more good than bad but not one of the best in the noir Canon as I'd been led to believe. Happy Gilmore - I remember seeing this in theaters when I was probably 5 and laughing so hard at Chubbs, Abe Lincoln, and the Alligator waving from heaven at the end. Love the sandman. All the stuff with Bob Barker and Richard Kiel is great. This is not my Sandler movie but as a whole it really holds up.
