Finally saw "Fire Walk With Me" and my feeling is that the whole premise of using this movie mainly to portray what had been to powerful effect left to the imagination throughout the series is just a bad idea and leads to a lot stuff that does little to inspire the kind of awe Lynch inspires when he's forging new territory. He's obviously got a ton of style and imagination so it can't be totally discounted but this movie so often feels like he's coloring inside the lines.

I see what you're saying and don't wholly disagree. To me it's less about the explanations (FTR I don't feel as though I got many from it) and more about empathizing with Laura. It could have been set outside of the Twin Peaks mythos and still worked for me for that reason.

Just checked out the new Godzilla movie and it is an achievement how they managed to make a Godzilla movie boring. In a standard Godzilla movie the bad plot and terrible acting are all expected and totally fine when surrounded by wanton and indiscriminate destruction and cool monsters fighting each other. The first 3/4s of this movie was mostly the bad acting and terrible storyline with scarcely any of the monster battles and devastation. Why did we have to wait until the final 20 minutes to see a city destroyed and even then the Godzilla vs 3-headed-dude that the movie built up to for the other almost 2 hours was over in literally 30 seconds.
Sidenote...when they are evacuating cities because there's dozens of massive killer monsters roaming the earth.....where exactly are they evacuating to?

Watched Chasing Amy last night. Affleck is much better than I remember in this, although that might just be because he's a contrast to Joey Lauren Adams, who has the dial turned up to 10 in almost every scene, and Jason Lee, who doesn't really have a ton to do.
Still very funny (Affleck has genuinely good comedic timing; clearly a funny guy rather than just a guy who can be in comedies).
The sexual politics in this are of course quite messy, with some weirdly "woke" scenes right next to pretty regressive stuff, although I think it works more often than it doesn't.
Affleck Rankings 1.) Dazed and Confused 2.) The Way Back 3.) School Ties 4.) Chasing Amy 5.) Mallrats

Just finished Going All the Way. Never heard of it before, but it was quite interesting in a sloppy charming way. Affleck and Jeremy Davies return home from the Korean War to Indianapolis, and the film wants to address like ten different things but doesn't really have the attention span to do more than two correctly. Still worth seeing though.
Affleck and Davies were genuinely great. Rachel Weisz and Rose McGowan were also great in their small roles. Nick Offerman's first film ever too.
Affleck Rankings 1.) Dazed and Confused 2.) The Way Back 3.) School Ties 4.) Chasing Amy 5.) Mallrats 6.) Going All the Way

Watched this last night. It was pretty good, albeit a little long. Hugh Jackman and Melissa Leo are the standouts.

Unfriended: Dark Web is rad once it starts rolling but the first half drags and also believing the characters are stupid enough to make the choices they make requires more suspension than the actual cool dark web murder shit. Check out a movie called The Den (2013, dir. Zachary Donahue). Similar concept but it goes in a somewhat different direction. I like both Unfriendeds but this is a better movie.

I've watched a bunch of movies this weekend (and will probably watch more before it's over). Trying to work my way through the They Shoot Pictures top 1000 films over the next SEVERAL years. All of these were new to me, and here they are ranked because apparently that's what we do here
1. The Magnificent Ambersons (did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did but it ruled) 2. Viridiana 3. A Man Escaped 4. L'Atalante 5. The Rules of the Game 6. A Day in the Country (too horny!)

Watched Good Will Hunting last night. I've seen it maybe 20 times before but it still holds up every time. Affleck is genuinely funny as always and nails his only ACTOR scene.
Matt Damon is legit excellent and his two big scenes with Minnie Driver and Robin Williams are still quite moving. Perfect little movie.
Affleck Rankings 1.) Good Will Hunting 2.) Dazed and Confused 3.) The Way Back 4.) School Ties 5.) Chasing Amy 6.) Mallrats

Deer Hunter and French Connection for us on saturday. i had never seen the former and he had never seen the latter. both obviously ruled.
also Equilibrium on friday and i continue to believe that movie is great and gets a bad rap for coming out shortly after the matrix even tho it's a vastly different story and aesthetic
