I watched a bunch of stuff this weekend. All of it was new to me. Here it is, ranked
1. The Wicker Man (1973) 2. Mirror (1975) 3. The Fly (1986) 4. Chungking Express (1994) 5. Dracula (1958) 6. Deep Red (1975) 7. The Firemen's Ball (1967) Would probably rank higher but the copy on the Criterion Channel looked slightly out of focus and it was wildly distracting 8. The Host (2006)

The rest of yesterday's viewing:
Black Book - This is awesome. not many WW2 movies are this thought provoking. Carice Van Houten is really good. I'm surprised her english language career required her humping Stannis Baratheon for people to know her here. [Prime]
The Fog - this was fine... Some great imagery and moments of extreme tension but I struggled to care much about the participants or the goofy ass backstory. Not one of Carpenter's best [Shudder]
Today's viewing:
Tricked- this was fun. could it have been more fun? Probably. The documentary preceding the movie was OK. I liked listening to Paul Verhoeven talk but everything else dumb. Not a bad use of 50 minutes though.[Vudu]
Lost Highway - Most David Lynch movies are beguiling and have unforgettable sounds and images. But I think sometimes he's better at grabbing your attention and involving you with the characters. This was not one of those times. Has its moments for sure, though. And again, he's so singular that in absolute terms it's tough for me to describe a movie like this as bad by any means. [Starz]
Assault on Precinct 13 - on the other hand this is for sure one of Carpenter's best. [Tubi]

I've always thought that Lost Highway is totally underappreciated, but I'm not sure I've seen it since it was in theaters.

Not one of Carpenter's best [Shudder] smh It wasn't bad. I think I just expect more from him. If people really think this is one of his best I'd love to hear why. for my last watch of the night, I was trying to decide between some Very Serious Movies and turned on Hollywood Shuffle instead. it was a smart decision

The scene where the bartender is smelling peoples mouths to figure out how much they owe him for their bill while absolute chaos is going on around them is maybe the funniest thing I’ve ever seen

jesus fucking christ, Swallow... so good, right? we had to sit and talk about it for an hour afterwards but our conclusion was that it's incredibly good and a really hard pill to WELL YOU KNOW. we also watched Vivarium last night which was a fun concept and pretty tense! not amazing but enjoyable friday night was solely Joe Bob's stuff so Chopping Mall -- ultimately not a great slasher flick. starts off really funny with some over the top 80s satire of rich white folks and then just dries up halfway. and then motherfucking Blood Sucking Freaks, which i absolutely adore and want the specialest special edition physical copy i can find. movie is just batshit in every way and pretty much the peak of all the 70s exploitation stuff that i love. we watched The Brothers Bloom saturday which i had somehow never seen. very wholesome in the end and really hilarious early on but kinda lacks the well crafted payoffs and turns of most other RJ movies.

The Host (2006) everyone needs to stop ranking their weekend watches cause The Host at the bottom of any list makes me mad but Wicker Man is GOAT. also surprised you hadn't seen Chungking Express yet. i'm in need of a rewatch but it slaps hard

I've always thought that Lost Highway is totally underappreciated, but I'm not sure I've seen it since it was in theaters. probably my favorite Lynch at this point (outside of Twin Peaks) or at least the one i come back to most often

I still enjoyed it but I maybe gave myself the wrong expectations and would enjoy it more in the future.

I definitely thought the pacing of The Host was awkward when I saw it but I had a tough time determining how much of that was because it wasn't hewing to the usual monster movie beats

reaaaaalllly good. I couldn’t get enough of Jack Lemmon (and, loved Matthau in Hopscotch) so I think we’re gonna watch The Odd Couple soon too.
