I never really got into DS aside from the big singles. Never a huge Police fan either, but given the choice between the two...

My dad is a big Dire Straits fan so I grew up listening to them a decent amount. Not huge on The Police for the most part

Never much cared about the Police, but have a soft spot for the 80's Dire Straits jams and Mark Knopfler's recent output is really better than it has any right to be.

I quite like the Police and generally think they're underrated, as punchable as Sting is these days. That said, my dad is/was a huge Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler fan when I was growing up and I agree with alady about his recent solo output. They get my vote.

Mark Knofflpfpler has yet to tour with Peter Gabriel or record a track with Shaggy so he's obviously leagues behind Sting.

I went with The Police, they have several songs I love, especially 'King of Pain' and 'Canary in a Coalmine.' Dire Straits I found boring outside of the big hits.

too tough to choose for me. i think both of their discographies are solid - every one of their albums are fantastic.

Voted Police just on the strength of Stewart Copeland's output with Oysterhead

Voted Police just on the strength of Stewart Copeland's output with Oysterhead It's great when I come to make an argument and someone has taken care of the legwork for me already.

I was really into both bands in high school and then I came to despise them both with a passion. Sting and Stewart Copeland are both insufferable jerkbabies, so I'll hold my nose and vote for Dire Straits. Lame songs, but Knopfler does some tasty guitar stuff once in a while. Haven't heard/noticed any of his solo recordings.

Lots of votes for things that are vaguely Police related.

Lots of votes for things that are vaguely Police related. As long as we're doing that, people should vote for the Police, since Sting was in one of the greatest SNL skits of all time (I can't link the video since my work blocks my access to it)

I have seen both live, and really liked the Dire Straits Brothers In Arms album, but The Police had 5 albums that each had several hits. And Outlandos d'Amour is one of my favorite debut albums.
Even tho Gordon is pretty insufferable, The Police are the easy choice for me.

Dire Straits epitomized yuppie rock in the 80s. Fuck them to hell.

The "Money for Nothing" riff is better than any Police riff.
pretty cut-and-dried stuff.

man, seems like some of you guys are basing the greatness of a band on one of their songs that doesn't represent them musically much at all.

I feel like the "chicks for free" line hasn't aged well. Ask Soccer Mommy's booking agent.

That line is actually referring to how rock stars got to go see Chic for free.
