There’s not a bad choice here but The Sound of Music is one of my favorite, if not my total favorite musical. The film adaptation is also extremely well made. If you haven’t seen the most recent blu ray transfer I highly recommend it.
Sound of Music was especially great for me as a kid growing up in a very very religious space, seeing as one of the main themes of the show is the idea of rejecting the “sacred” for your path in life. The scene of mother Abess singing “Climb Every Mountain” brings me to tears literally every time I watch it.
On the other end of things, West Side Story is fantastic but the main themes of the show boil down to “gangs and feuds are bad mkay “ which like alright I get it but maybe there could be some greater point made here. The composing work is, at times, significantly better than SoM, and I love that there have been so many versions that have made artistic changes over time. One of the more recent cast recordings has the Puerto Rican gang singing in Spanish during the Quintet and it makes it sound so much fucking better.
All in all, both are great shows but Sound of Music resonates with me more and has some memories of childhood attached to it as well.

I like both, but am a big fan of TSoM. Played "Edelweiss" at our wedding.

There was an interesting piece on Leonard Bernstein on NPR this morning that included a section on West Side Story and his collaboration with Jerome Robbins and Stephen Sondheim.
Sound of Music is v sentimental for me and in 5th grade I played Edelweiss on the accordion as part of my class project on Austria yes in retrospect it was a bit much

I just don’t know many people who play it and it’s a very neat instrument. There was a guy outside of target by my apartment playing a bunch of pop songs on an accordian and it was awesome.
