Is The Expanse good or will it turn me into an incel? Are there any concerns with the source material where the quality of the show may be headed for a cliff?

I've been up since 4am with the kiddo so I caught up on some TV:
Succession finale (fantastic) Mandalorian (I'm through 4 episodes and it's still kind of meh) Righteous Gemstones (still humming Misbehavin) Simpsons (obviously)

was not huge into Mandalorian until the last 2 episodes and then of course Giancarlo Esposito just fucking saves everything. wish he was in it more but im assuming he'll be THE story in season 2 so that's cool.
started The Witcher and it's pretty fun so far.

Everyone says the character work is the best part which tbd. Everyone is kind of boring so far. Maybe they'll get better. I watched 4 episodes yesterday. My biggest concern (Thomas Jane wearing a fedora) seems to have been addressed (he is relentlessly clowned by other characters for wearing a fedora). I will keep going since it's a fairly entertaining way to spend 40 minutes.

has anyone seen don't f**k with cats on netflix? holy fuckin moly.
i recommend not researching it before watching, just make sure you have 3 hours to kill and are prepared for a disturbing true crime/internet sleuthing saga.

Did any of y'all watch His Dark Materials? It was really well done IMO.
The Witcher is also very good. We know nothing of the books or video games, but are hooked on the show.

We're only a few episodes in, I was not committed to it whatsoever until He whacked Benji across the face with the hammer on screen

His Dark Materials isnt really doing much for me yet. i never read the books but it needs a LOT of exposition and dialog regarding backstories to get the audience to understand what's happening and why they should care and it's just not clicking with me.
might as well watch the whole thing but after E3 last night i just wasnt feeling it.

If I remember that it's one of the weaker episodes. Hopefully the rest of the series picks up for you.
I will say that I'm interested to see what the reaction is from people who haven't read the books. You're absolutely right about the exposition and I don't know how easy of a sell it will be on a broad audience.

yeah i'll definitely post my thoughts once im done.
fwiw i dont dislike it -- it's conceptually fascinating and has a lot of fun fantasy gimmicks im usually super into. there's just something about the setup that feels really arduous, which i wasnt expecting from a series that's basically considered the rebuttal to chronicles of narnia.
all the actors are top notch tho

The books were really difficult to get through as a kid, and probably not intended for a 10 year old or whatever. Had my folks realized what the whole point of the series was at the time guaranteed they would have ripped that shit out of my little hands.
Rebuttal to narnia only kinda works cuz atheist.

I have seen all of You and honestly I really enjoyed it. At times it stretches the plot a bit and I almost felt a bit like I was watching trashy TV but I couldn't look away
I'm watching Messiah now, on about episode 7. This show comes real close to hitting the mark. I love the plot idea and I love media that deals with religion in interesting ways so it's so close to being so perfectly up my alley, but the writing just isn't there and some of the acting is bad. It's interesting enough that I'll probably finish it but man I feel like this plot idea in the hands of better writers and directors and actors could have really been fantastic

everyone is mad at me for rooting for james but he is so cute! ugh nooo. loving the tourney but cringing whenever these guys try to be funny, like when holzhauer got the american bandstand/philly clue right over hometown boy brad rutter.
