I'm in the no camp. I feel like it's gotten better over the past few years, maybe i just don't notice it. Honestly, like most things, i find the people who complain about it more annoying than the phones themselves.

I'm not a fan of Yondr, but people using their phones at shows is a problem. It's one this to snap a quick pic, but people who hold their phones up for extended periods of time are ruining the experience for those behind them.

I still find it pretty irritating but tell myself I'll enjoy the show more if I just try to ignore it

I don’t get too bothered by it but sometimes it’s a little overwhelming. There was a point at Mitski a few weeks ago where I couldn’t see because like a dozen people were trying to record a whole song. I just moved and it was no big deal but it was still annoying. I’ve also been next to a not insignificant number of people who have answered a phone call during a show which is awful. I don’t think every show needs to be phone free but I appreciate the occasional phone free show. I also am typically annoyed by the anti-phone crowd because it’s usually accompanied by IF THESE DAMN MILLENNIALS COULD IGNORE TECHNOLOGY FOR A SECOND which is truly dumb and exhausting

I hate when people browse the board during shows

It depends on the show.

I've liked every Yondr show I've been to, and I'd love to see it at basically every show Vic or bigger.

it is bothersome. but i would rather be at a hushed audience show with phones for photo/video than a show without phones but surrounded by chatterboxes.
i usually pick my favorite song or two to take photo/video of any band. either i hold the phone at chest level to not block views behind me, or i'm standing at the side/back.

I have bigger shit to worry about than phones at shows, although I do think you’re a moron if you watch more than like 30 seconds through it
Also if you’re taking a video hold your phone sideways and don’t cover the bottom speakers so the 5 people who will actually listen to it can actually hear it. That drives me nuts when I see it

I can generally ignore it if it's not directly blocking my view, but if it is, there's literally nothing else I can focus on until it's gone.
I'd take phones over people talking over songs at the front of the crowd, though.

I feel like taking a few seconds to snap a few shots is totally cool. Filming more than ten seconds when you're in front of me? Nein!
That said, at smaller shows with local acts, a band might have requested their audience person to film their whole dang set. Hopefully, they're not obnoxious about it.

I always take an IG story or two or three at shows but I don't like having cameras in my face so I guess I'm a huge hypocrite. I'm tall enough where I'm never holding the phone above my head, though, so in my mind I'm not blocking anyone more than my big dumb head already is.

I snap photos pretty quickly - I hope I'm not irritating with it, but I pretty literally have my phone back in my pocket in less than 5 seconds.
Folks who hold their phone up for minutes at a time are a problem. Thankfully haven't seen anyone hold up a tablet in a long time.

I saw a guy front row at a Nick Cave show holding up a tablet - the crowd took care of him pretty quickly.

this week i found on youtube an entire duran duran show that i was at in 1993. someone in the balcony filmed it. it's not an official video. and now this thread is making me think how i would've reacted if that person were in front of me through that whole show.
i did not go to a lot of shows then. was it typical to bring camcorders to concerts? i'm not even sure what other device they could've used.

At the Kacey show this dude front row center basically took a shitty phone video of the entire thing, despite the signs saying no video. I definitely took photos there but he was in upskirt territory and it was really creepy.

If people would just not extend their arms and keep it near their faces, it would be fine. I mean... you can't get mad at most people for having a head, am I right?

When I was following Claypool around in the early 2000s there were a LOT of people I fell in with even then who would bring camcorders to every show, yeah.

I think people doing some level of video for actual historical documentation is cool (ie the 1993 example), but those are far and few between with current shows. Back in the day I remember sending a self adressed stamped envelope to tape traders in the back of metal magazines to get a printed list of all their bootleg handheld Van Halen and Metallica videos. Which would invariably cost $30 for a dubbed blury VHS but it was worth every penny because how else were you going to see Cliff Burton live or Diamond Dave doing some of the deep cuts off of Fair Warning. Those guys were doing a public service, even if it was for profit and criminal.
Someome taking a shaky handheld phone recording of Chvrches to post on their Insta is just lame.

One time I got a boot from the Damaged Justice tour and it had half the opening set from Queensryche on it. I think the tape melted from how many times my brother and I watched it. I think it cost $25 (via money order no less) but actual real value in terms of enjoyablity was no less than 3 or 4 thousand USD.
