phones at shows arent a mortal sin imo but if you're just taking pictures, snap a few good ones from whatever angle you need and then get it out of everyone's sightlines.
videos at concerts should only be like 10 seconds for insta/snap and should only ever be at eye level.
anyone who records more than 10 seconds (or full songs at that) should be publicly executed tabled for both the other concertgoers around you and everyone on youtube who doesnt want your shitty quality recording with clickbait title wasting their time.

I saw a guy front row at a Nick Cave show holding up a tablet - the crowd took care of him pretty quickly. you can say it was Buzz, i think we banned him again

see that's just it. we all have our ideas on how nice it is to be respectful when taking pics / video, but sooo many others don't give a shit about their surroundings and who they bother. so i'm all in on a no phone policy. i've done it a few times at jack white shows and didn't miss it at all.

If people would just not extend their arms and keep it near their faces, it would be fine. I mean... you can't get mad at most people for having a head, am I right? When their head is illuminated for the entire show by their shitty phone, you can definitely get upset. this goes for movie theaters too -- wild that people still wont adjust their brightness in dark rooms and think we all want to see their facebook feeds

One of the reasons I only want to see movies at Alamo Drafthouse is because they have a zero tolerance policy for talking and mobile phone usage during their screenings.
At shows, I am much more agitated by people carrying on conversations, but excessive phone usage is definitely a major irritation. I'm generally fine with incidental usage like checking a text message or writing down the setlist, etc. Also fine with photos within reason as long as people don't leave their fucking flash on. I have a problem when someone takes a video for longer than 10 seconds.
If there was a way to disable video and flash only, I'd be mostly fine with phones at shows. The Yondr thing is a little annoying because the pouch is bulky and as an adult who is aware of how my behavior impacts the experience of others, I'd like to be able to use my phone on occasion during a show.
Too bad they don't have a Muzzl pouch for people's yappers.

I wouldn't want it for small venues or fests but the few Yondr shows I've been to I feel like I enjoyed more and before the show it genuinely felt like people were talking to each other more. It was kind of neat instead of just having everyone buried in their phone waiting on it to start. Idk felt like a neat plus to the concept.
I'll take some quick pics and sometimes a quick video clip myself but never more than a few seconds. It definitely annoys me to have a phone in my face from someone else. I'd be ok with more shows using the Yondr thing
That also being said, I enjoy being able to find well recorded performances on YouTube. I mean that's a very very small number of people recording that actually take a quality one, but having some videos to watch from shows I've been to or a band I might not get to see is pretty cool. But also, more and more performances I feel like are getting streamed and professionally shot anyway

People who can't stop touching their phones during movies are worse than people who can't stop touching their phones during concerts.

Re: camcorders in the old days: Once I got one that wasn’t a huge beast, I took it to a few shows, and got the Flaming Lips, Motion City Soundtrack when they played Fireside Bowl, and a few others. I brought it to the first Chicago show Sondre Lerche played, mainly for the headliner Ed Harcourt, and Ed’s roadie saw me and was PISSED. I really didn’t do it much after that since it was a pain dealing with the tapes and I didn’t have an easy way to digitally convert them at the time.
Phones at shows: I’m perfectly fine with people taking a few pics, I do the same. But people that take long shitty videos where their phones are moving all over drive me nuts. I think the no phones thing is great for specific very special shows, like the VW Metro show. But like Neko Case in Madison, like bosma posted?? Come on...

People who can't stop touching their phones during movies are worse than people who can't stop touching their phones during concerts. There was a young woman diagnosed from my family and I during Endgame on Sunday who snapchatted her face through most of the final battle. That was really necessary I’m sure.

she’s done it for pretty much every single show over the last few years. Apparently a lot of people didn’t get the “no flash” memo and it irritated her. I guess there was a show where a bunch of people were using their flash on their phones and she repeatedly asked them to stop and they didn’t, and she was apparently not feeling an encore that night. A bunch of people took to the internet and called her a bitch after that so she has the same blanket rule for all of her shows.

Also, what's the deal with people taking video of the stage at shows when they're a million miles away from the stage?

but to be honest, there have been distractions at concerts for a long time already, just not of the technical variety.
i mean, i remember at arena shows when i first started going that i had to dodge frisbees, beach balls, beercans, popbottle rockets...
so if it's not one thing, it's another ;–)

If a beach ball comes my way, I pop it.

I can deal with phones at a concert if its just up for a couple pictures or whatnot. However, when you record the entire song, fuck off.
Phones at movies bug me the most though
