I've had a few but maybe Uncle Bob might've smirked at this Guided by Voices- Bee Thousand “You need this” was all the PM said. It was a link to a website I’d never heard of, mediafire.com. The PM was from some dude I knew as “fishkingpies” on the official message board of Lollapalooza. I’d won tickets to the 2009 edition the year before, but my Mom wouldn’t let me go. I hope the Strokes played in 2010. “What is this?” “A link to a really good Guided by Voices album” they said. Guided by Voices. Yeah, that ‘Teenage FBI” song was real good as a soundtrack to racing in a NASCAR videogame I had. But an album? Whatever, I’m on the internet and I feel like I’m being challenged, so I gotta listen to it and show this person how way cool I never have ever been, but am. The first track the recording device fails in the guitar solo part. The fourth song is about the lead singer doing acid and looking in the mirror, seeing his son’s face. One time Neko Case sang on “Echos Myron” at the Ptichfork Music Festival and no one in the section I was knew who she was or what she was singing. I promise it wasn’t just me. “Awful Bliss is on this album” “I Am a Scientist” was almost a hit. I keep coming back to this album not always because of the memories attached to it. We keep coming back because Robert Pollard wanted to be a Rockstar who never had to leave Dayton, OH. Robert Pollard became a Rockstar, however brief, for a significant chunk of musical time, without ever having to leave Dayton, OH. One time Guided by Voices toured headlining a tour with The Strokes (or “the stroky boys” as Uncle Bob called them at the Empty Bottle 15+ years later). There’s magic taking place here (and Alien Lanes, and 2-4 other albums in various circles) that had never been seen before. It will never happen again. That’s alright with me. But should you listen to it, I promise you, you'll have spent 36 minutes worse ways. |
