this started off pretty interesting and off kilter but i got kind of bored of it after a while. does he play all the instruments himself? pretty cool. At least piano. His first album (also great) is more standard balladry that features him more front-and-center in that regard. It's worth noting that the first half of this album is def a bit stronger than the back half, even if I like a lot of those songs too.

Just finished my first listen and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I love how quirky it is and the compositions/arrangements are gorgeous. 'Phantom of Aleppoville' and 'By the Boats of Europe' were highlights because they were a bit more immediate, but there is a lot of depth and I'll definitely be going back to pick up more of the details.
I had never heard of him before, so many thanks for the recommendation.

Just listened to the Benjamin Clementine album, and it was super interesting. Definitely agree with Timbo w/r/t the Of Montreal comparison; has a darker Skeletal Lamping vibe for sure. Also reminded me of a quirkier A Night at the Opera.
I'll definitely be coming back to this due to the depth that others noted. Cool rec for sure

So I chose this album for a multitude of reasons. They're releasing their new album in a few weeks, so I thought this would be the perfect time to hopefully gain some momentum for them in the only way I know how, and that's via the board.
To me, this is their best album, and you may have scrolled by it's placement on P4K's best albums of the Pacific North West (this was #37). They bring in a lot of different but familiar influences to their music, the most notable being Sonic Youth/Thurston Moore. This sound gets used enough that most bands that sound like SY usually don't last, but Gun Outfit have endured for quite some time now.
It's a brisk listen, at only 33 minutes, so obviously they weren't influenced on track lengths by SY. Check out "Southern Chill" which I feel perfectly encapsulates this album. It's a warm guitars album, similar to Incinerate off of Rather Ripped, that just warms the soul when you hear it. They don't go the noise route often, but if I had to liken them to any other band it would be the short lived Posse from 2014. (I say short lived b/c they posted a cryptic message on FB earlier this year saying that the next album would be their last).
If you end up digging this, their 2015 and 2013 albums are also great, as is their EP from last year.

Just listened to this for the first time. Want to listen at least once more before posting all my thoughts, but I definitely see the SY influence. I kinda wish they were better singers tho?

I could be wrong, but I think that's what the type of music calls for. A more subdued vocal approach. I think the female vocals are elegant, but the male vocals are kind of Thurston/Van Morrison after 8 bottles of Jim Beam. Maybe I just enjoy the SY feel that I don't even notice the quality of their singing, since to me they are really just emulating the sound.

I finally caught up on the three picks so far.
Phoebe Bridgers - Liked this the most of the picks so far, although I only made it through about 75% of the album. I need to go back to it and spend more time with it, but I do like what I heard.
Benjamin Clementine - Gave it a shot, I wanted to like it, but I just stopped caring for it about halfway through. Pretty much the same as everyone else, it was just a little too all over the place for me to really get into it.
Gun Outfit - I actually liked the first two tracks on the album, but it tanked for me after that. Did not like the dude's voice at all. I can definitely hear the SY references, but I didn't care much for it.

I listened to the Gun Outfit album yesterday and didn't particularly enjoy it. The vocals certainly didn't help, but there I didn't anything else going on very interesting either. The two tracks that stood out were 'Phaedra' and 'My Whole Life' because they did some different things texturally and with guitar tones, but the rest was a bit of a chore to get through.
They were a band I had been meaning to check out, so I'm glad for the nudge, but I can't say I'm too motivated to listen to the new one.

well shoot. Thought more people would enjoy Gun Outfit. Win some, lose some. I still like 'em, but I'm such a SY fan that anything similar in sound is pretty much guaranteed to be enjoyed by me.

Liked it better the second time around. The weak point for me is the female vocalist. SY works because Kim's voice is monotone, but tuneful. GUn Outfit's female singer's vocals are out of tune? idk - it was fine. Made me want to listen to SY, so I did. ( Goo, not that anyone but Timbo probably cares).

It seems like we've talked about this one a ton already, but I don't know that there has been a more effective album this year. The writing is so good and the nuance in the production is perfect. I also think the choices made in arrangements with regard to when to use added strings, piano or other voices are spot on.
An album this intense runs the risk of being overly heavy or burdensome, but I think the focus of the writing and the reasonable run time help avoid that. Top 10 album for sure.

I finally listened to Turn Out the Lights this week. Had been avoiding it because I have a lot of not so great personal stuff going on, and so my music choices recently have been more upbeat and/or familiar.
I appreciate the artistry and the album is beautiful, but it is a bit too personal/confessional for my tastes. Glad you all seem to connect with it, though. It's a very good album, but not something I am likely to listen to much.

I've only had a chance to listen to it twice so far, but I know I'll be going back to it much more. I listened to Sprained Ankle back when people started posting it here a year or two ago, but that one did nothing for me. So this is a pretty big step forward in just 2 years.

I'm in the middle of it right now, and I'm blown away. Lyrical work has done less for me over the past while, but this cuts right past all of that.

I've listened to this album a lot in the past week but I feel like I still need to listen to it more. It's getting better on every listen but it doesn't have the emotional impact as Sprained Ankle does for me. I do enjoy this album but Sprained Ankle was more bare with it being her voice and one instrument for pretty much every song and as a result more vulnerable. In fact I don't think there's a single point when a song is layered with backing vocals that I don't think to myself it'd be better if it was just her. With that being said I'm still happy she went in this direction. I didn't want another Sprained Ankle and this is a natural and good progression for her. Even with more instruments I don't find the music to be as gripping or extraordinary as on Sprained Ankle. It's still great, just not as captivating for me. Lyrically it is on par though. She really fucking cuts deep on this and I love it. It's probably my AOTY but not like Sprained Ankle which is one of my favorite albums ever. I guess we'll see in time, like I said I still need to digest. I know I'm basically saying Sprained Ankle was better, and I think it was, but I still do really like this.
Favorite tracks
Appointments (this is much better on the album) Shadowboxing (Guitar here might be my favorite music on the album) Televangelist (when that organ comes in) Sour Breath (you're everything i want and i'm all you dread is such a great line) Even (love how simple this is, closest we get to SA on here) Claws in Your Back (prob my favorite song on the album. music is great, lyrics is great. definitely feels like the child of go home, especially given the play on the last lines of both songs)

New album is better than Sprained Ankle. I enjoy both, though.
Glad I could help.

so I screwed up again on the timeline. apologies to sleeping, as last week should have been Sepultura's Roots, but we'll just shift everything forward. So Wiki will be next week instead of this week. I'm going to update the first page of the Nom's thread. Nov. 6th - 10th Sepultura - Roots (nom'd by sleeping)

So yeah, didn't like this at all. But that really shouldn't surprise anyone. For some reason I'd always thought this band was like a heavy metal band similar to like Testament or something like that, and not more Nu-Metalish like Soulfly (who apparently was in this band). Just not my type of music at all. Reminded me of my days listening to Korn and hating everything, as opposed to today, I listen to Deerhunter and hate everything.
