working my way through it and a little sad i didnt catch the cavaleras playing this in its entirety last winter but i feel like i had a good reason to miss it.
at any rate, still holds up as one of the seminal groove metal albums of all time and one of the only good things max did before going off on the soulfly/nailbomb/5-million-side-projects-not-worth-a-shit nosedive.

First off, thank you to sleeping for the nomination. Hadn't listened to Sepultura for a long time, so this was a fun blast from the past. Was never a huge fan, but I did enjoy this record, except for the "Canyon Jam". Too much noodling - they take about 6 minutes for it to go anywhere, and by then I have lost interest. At least they had the decency to put it at the end so I can skip it. "Roots Bloody Roots" was the only song I absolutely remembered and it's a great start to the album. Other highlights are "Spit" "Ambush" and "Endangered Species". I like the layering of the vocals - there will be the main vocal and then someone else will scream or whisper "Motherfucker". The more Brazilian stuff in the middle of the record ("Jasco" and "Itsari") is very cool but seems misplaced, although "Ambush" and "Ratamahatta" are sort of hybrid tracks that mixes the 2 styles, so maybe that works afterall? Regardless, I do think this would have been better as an album of the more groove metal stuff and the other stuff was released separately. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Was not familiar with Soulfly much, so took a gander at that. And, well....umm...

yeah it's a common debate between cavalera fans (i'll wait for kevblu and audiobully to jump in on this) but i'm firmly in the camp that the only good Sepultura is when max was in the band and writing everything, yet oddly enough once he left and started Soulfly, i thought both bands sounded terrible. and ever since then, max has been obsessed with collaborating with my favorite artists and dumbing them down as much as possible.
**Sepultura did a cover of "Bullet the Blue Sky" a while back that i actually kinda dig tho

yeah, "mayor" is so good. the production on this album is so fun, it's the most pleasing music wiki has ever rapped over while still having really sick adventurous production. and he comes in with some of his best verses yet. def one of the most underrated albums of the year. also, the feature spin did on him when the album came out has the best "no one works harder" opening anecdote: while the eclipse was happpening, wiki is downstairs in the studio, finishing a music video and not caring about anything else

i fucking love this album
feels like a natural progression from what he was doing with ratking.
only very few people are rapping better than wiki at this moment

it's the most pleasing music wiki has ever rapped over while still having really sick adventurous production I actually fully agree with this sentiment, and you all know what a departure from my typical opinions this is.

Wiki is great. I especially enjoyed "Mayor". I had started listening to it when it was released, but something happened and I only listened to the first couple tracks. Glad to see it through this time. The album loses steam for me a little at the end, but definitely a fun listen. Will definitely be coming back to it.

This wasn't the worst thing I've ever listened to it, but it's definitely not something I'll be going back to. There's nothing wrong with it, I just feel like it's no different than what I've heard on the radio in this genre. She has a great voice, but again, I feel like I've heard all of this before. I did enjoy a few tracks: Jupiter, Truth or Dare, and Turn to Dust.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Honestly, she should let her voice take center stage more, it's buried under such blaaaaaaaaah production on most tracks. Better and Turn to Dust are proof of how little she needs behind her.

My first listen was yesterday and I thought it was great. I'll get back to it this afternoon and dig into it a little more.

I did give it another listen and really enjoyed it again. Her voice/writing/performance is certainly the highlight, and while I like most of the production, I do feel like there is too much of it at times. The amount of percussion, ambient sounds, and even extra layering of her voice can get a bit overwhelming at times and detract from how powerful her performance is.
Even so, I feel like those moments are few and the overall effect is excellent.

She has an amazing voice. I listened to this twice, both while at work. I enjoyed it, but nothing grabbed me. Some of the more "electronic" elements of the production were good, but many of them seemed to be in the way. Anyway, liked it more than I thought. Glad I listened.

I had been meaning to listen to this for quite some time just never got around to it. Obviously, like most, I'd heard Hong Kong Garden before but never knew that it wasn't actually apart of the original album. The album initially ended with Switch, but the remaster has HKG and The Staircase added in.
I can see why its one of the post-punk classics, and it has a lot of good to great tracks on it. I found it a tiny bit meandering though. I'll need more listens though, b/c as with a lot of other post-punk albums, it takes time.
