I don't like to but I feel like when I don't I can't understand a lot of what is said. Shrug. I'd say it's like 50/50.

Yes I believe that everyone watches foreign films without subtitles and just guesses what's going on.

I know people who would have the subtitles on for every movie, regardless of language or context.
Those people are morons.

At least half of what I watch is foreign language so that comes with the territory. A good majority of modern films are mixed on physical releases to a 5.1 audio system which I do not have (you can’t always change this setting but it’s great when you can), so I miss a ton of dialogue without captions. Overall I don’t find it distracting or bothersome.

I love increasing the volume on my TV because everyone mumbles to then be deafened by the soundtrack seconds later.
Edit: I still use subtitles for English speaking movies

To actually answer the question on my end, if it ain't in English I watch with subtitles. If it is in English and I'm watching this movie, I'm either at a theatre or or watching on my own, and either way is isolating otherwise I can't focus.
I think if you're watching, like, Finding Nemo or some shit with the subtitles on at 8pm on a Tuesday I just don't process or think about shit like you do and I'm not sorry about it
Edit: Worth noting I watch non-English films like once in a blue moon. I ain't in film club but this question was not asked over there

I rewatched Sopranos and The Wire since taking up this stance and realized I missed out on some quality dialogue that had slipped by me the first time out. It's a habit I picked up having an infant pass out on me so I could still watch TV and now I have every app set up to show subtitles. Bonus: I'm reading more.

I guess I just have a fundamentally different way of watching/consuming moving pictures from y’all. Good to know I’m still a weirdo sometimes

I'm currently watching Green Room and all the talking through doors and walls is what prompted this.

I watch most things with subtitles due to the aforementioned audio issues with super quiet dialogue and extraordinarily loud music/effects.
Relatedly, I like to read super dense novels while simultaneously listening to the audiobook; I retain so much more information when I read and listen as opposed one or the other.

A Brooklyn 99 episode had a subtitle of "Irritated cow *mooing*"

TV is set on closed captioning. I’ll let y’all know if I ever watch another movie.

I use subtitles for about half the movies I watch - either foreign ones that aren't in either French or English, or even at times for some in English in which dialogues are either a fast and furious rolling fire or contain a seizable amount of slang.
I do find subtitles in other movies distracting though as I can't help but read them systematically even if I don't need to

We have subtitles on all the time because we're watching with the sound really low so the kid doesn't wake up.
