It was a weird one, but let’s hear about your favorite shows of 2021. It was exciting to get back out there again and I know a lot of us saw some good shit!

Had the worst diarrhea of the year, forgot the tickets and had to go home to get them, did not go into the show a Dermot fan, realized I’m too nice to my friends, thought about how stupid it would be to get the delta variant at the show, everything about the performance was boring as shit and mostly bad. Yeah, I’m thinking Dermot takes the cake here

Anyways the best venue show I saw was Adrianne Lenker at the high noon, and the best festival show I saw was Miley Cyrus at lollapalooza.

Best large show of 2021: Phish @ Chase Center in SF
Best medium show of 2021: Adrianne Lenker @ Thalia Hall
Best small-ish show of 2021: Titus Andronicus @ SubT
Honorable Mentions The Flaming Lips @ The Criterion in OKC. A very silly and very fun experience being in the bubble. Loved OKC and loved the show. Phish @ Walmart AMP in Rogers, Arkansas. First Phish show back since Covid. Amazing vibes.

Only went to 7 concerts this year - favorite was probably Trail of the Dead. Just a really fun crowd and a great set from a band I hadn't seen in almost 20 years. Great group of friends to see a concert with as well.
Others that were fun:
Japanese Breakfast Julien Baker Del McCoury Band Bartees Strange

Went to 56 shows this year and managed to not catch Covid, so that was a good year.
Favorite show: Jeff Rosenstock at Metro by far. Best aftershow: Jimmy Eat World doing an unannounced Bleed American full set at Metro Most unique set: Special Interest playing in the little alley next to Metro. I’m still surprised they played the whole set before the cops came Best festival set: Les Savy Fav at Riot Fest Best surprise (festival): Flaming Lips actually performing like a great live band again Best surprise (venue): San Holo at Radius. Really impressive set and excellent production Best board moment: pretty much the entire board hanging out at the empty blue stage Pitchfork Friday while ignoring Dehd on the main stage

Only saw one show, St Vincent. I have 6 shows with tickets next year so I'm way ahead of 2021 already.

elsewhere, I've posted the trapper keeper's 17 days when I went to shows, but here I'll just list the best show I saw this year as She and Him at the Chicago Theatre earlier this month, and list King Crimson at Ravinia this summer as the most important show, because as of a few days ago, the band is now allegedly retired forever.

Only saw a handful of shows, but they were all great. That whole Peace Simulation bill ruled, Armand Hammer, Jeff Rosenstock, Titus Andronicus, Wiki/Navy Blue, Baroness, and Peggy were the rest.

I went to about a dozen shows and one day of Riot Fest. Metallica at Metro is my obvious answer for show of the year. Pumpkins at Riot Fest was my favorite festival set.

This is actually tough. I definitely had 4 shows that stood out among the rest and ranking them is hard
Titus Andronicus at SubT (night 2)- The Monitor is maybe my favorite album ever and this show was so cathartic and awesome, and they sounded great. I still wish I could have made night 1, I knew lots of people there and seeing those show with friends would have elevated it, but flight cancellations got in my way. But great stuff
St Vincent at Pitchfork- First time seeing her and it kind of blew me away. Loved everything about this set and I'm not the biggest fan of the new record. The new takes on some old songs were very fun
Big Thief at White Oak Music Hall in Houston- Sounded amazing, just a wonderful set. The new stuff all sounded so good. They were solid at Pitchfork too but this gets the edge as a headlining show for sure and they played a decently long set. Loved it
Turnstile and Slowthai at Warehouse Live in Houston- They were supposed to open for Suicideboys here but that show was an outdoor show and got rescheduled, and so Turnstile and Slowthai who could n't make the new date booked a last minute show here, and it was one of the most fun and wild shows I've ever been to. Both of them were ridiculously energetic and fun
Other honorable mentions- Black Midi here in Houston would be number 5, they ruled. Flaming Lips bubble show deserves a shout-out, it was fun and unique experience though I wouldn't do it again. Saw Hayes Carll twice this year and he was fantastic both times. And comedy show but I saw Daniel Sloss last month and that was one of my favorite comedy sets I've ever seen live

Modest Mouse @ The Vic Wilco @ Pritzker Dead & Co. @ Wrigley, night 2 Indigo de Souza @ Beat Kitchen Nation of Language @ Sleeping Village Guided by Voices @ Thalia
I guess the best fest shows were Big Thief @ Pitchfork and Beach Bunny --> Smashing Pumpkins at Riot Fest.
Shout out to Mookie for being my inadvertent wingman for 2 shows/dates this year you da real MVP I'll let you know when I need you to be at another show/date I promise it won't be Dermont Kennedy

Black Midi @ Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis with Timbo. Our flight from Chicago to Minneapolis was late, we got there about 10 minutes before they started. Crazy good live.

Best Show: Metallica @ Metro
It's an easy choice for a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Honorable mention though is Limp Bizkit at Lolla. As it relates to expectations vs reality I had way more fun at that show than I was anticipating.

5. Shy Boys, Sleeping Village, November 19 - These dudes' tunes got me through a lot of isolation over the past 2 years and it was so buoyant and life-affirming to finally hear them live. They absolutely delivered and were lovely, gracious dudes to chat with as well. Such a happy night.
4. Billy and the Kids, Red Rocks, July 12 - This felt like a very special evening in a lot of ways. The fact that our already-planned Colorado trip happened to line up with this show, that I was even able to get tickets, that it was my dude's first time at Red Rocks, that it was peak hot vax summer and the vibes were just right. I had never sat up at the top at Red Rocks and that was kind of great - lots of room for dancing (albeit with a little vertigo) and a great view. And the set was great - Bill isn't afraid to keep up the tempo and Billy > Mayer any day.
3. Billy Strings, Hoxeyville Festival, August 13-14 - The setting for this fest could not have been any more idyllic - beautiful wooded campsites, friendly hippie neighbors who were generous with their growlers, and smack in the middle of the Perseid meteor shower. The music was just the cherry on top. The sets were more traditional bluegrass than is my personal fave, but I'll be able to say I was there when Billy brought out a sitar player for the first time. 2. Billy Strings, Riverside Theatre, November 3 - This set was just a pure heater and the crowd was almost a little scary intense but in a good way. Setlist was absolute fire and I was so happy to be able to share this set (and wonderful venue, great food and good times in Milwaukee) with friends from Nashville and Portland.
1. Billy Strings, Wintrust Field, June 11 - This was my second show back and the energy was absolutely insane. This was when they were still doing "pods" so the field was very sparsely filled, and my friends and I were in the second row with tons of space around us so you really felt like you were connecting directly to the band and they could really see you. Setlist was great and the jams were super sick. I still listen to this show all the time.
