Was extremely bummed about the Avalanches canceling, that I left the fest at around 6:15 today. Really didn't care about anyone other than The Avalanches and Solange, but didn't feel like waiting the 2 1/2 hour wait for her. Best set of the weekend (and one of the best fests sets I've ever seen) goes to PJ. It was seriously outstanding. Jeff Rosenstock was the second best. Seen him a few times and have loved his shows, but his fork set is by far my favorite I've seen of his. LCD was great as always. Tribe was a lot of fun. I liked Danny and Vince. Colin Stetson was pretty good today but the rest of Sunday for me was meh. All in all a pretty good weekend. Super upset no Avalanches show, but here's hoping they will finally play here some time this year?

Had an excellent weekend in Chicago, and a good 2 days at Pitchfork. Good to see a lot of you all again.
I got there Friday at 3:30, didn't get in until 4:15. I unknowingly snuck in line - I just joined the mass of people clustered near the entrance lines. So that sucked, but I used the new entrance on Saturday, no wait, piece of cake.
LCD was fantastic as always, but I wanted to hear more new songs. Guess they're saving those until the album comes out. Opening with 'Yr City's a Sucker' was a surprise, didn't realize they had started playing that.
PJ Harvey was my favorite on Saturday, she looked and sounded great. The Feelies were kind of stiff at first, but by the last few songs (Crazy Rhythms!) they were rolling fast. Arab Strap was pretty good, they rocked more than I expected. Jeff Rosenstock's enthusiasm and stage banter were better than his music.
Have they started to let more people in? It seems like there were a lot more people at this fest than in the past. Blue Stage especially felt crowded.
Edit: I'm not ATCQ fan, but I listened to most of their set walking around, and I watched the final 20 minutes. I was impressed, seemed like they had a lot of energy, kept things moving, and a lot of the crowd was going wild.

Opening with 'Yr City's a Sucker' was a surprise, didn't realize they had started playing that. They had only played the unreleased new songs at Brooklyn Steel because they could control (with the respect of fans) videos not surfacing, what with a contained room and the hometown mutual respect. Basically, they don't want people's first experience with these songs to be shitty phone videos and there's no way those wouldn't surface if they played the songs at Pitchfork.

The sets I loved I was mostly expecting to but Solange and Ride were both fantastic and I wasn't sure either was going to be.

Solange was 20 minutes late and played less than an hour total. Really wasn't headliner-level. Also baffled that she has numerous albums and in her less than an hour set included a cover nobody cared about, a Blood Orange cover, and then some old song that was a massive momentum killer as opposed to like, the numerous older songs she presumably could have performed or more of the stuff off Seat at the Table
Ride's roadies are seemingly incapable of putting together pedals and cords. Second guitar dude seemed bored out of his mind onstage and his singing was just mumbles. A lot of the new songs didn't work well. Kinda just "meh" overall.
Also at a very sparse front of the crowd when I'd been standing at the barrier for like over an hour some woman mid-set wearing a Ride t shirt tries to shove past me to film them, then insists I'm a "poser" and tries to quiz me on Ride trivia questions. When I proceeded to answer her questions correctly she just started shrieking over me and waving her arms in my face. She was also such a "hardcore fan" that she felt the need to yelp at me over their entire set instead of just watching them. Really getting sick of olds and short people that feel entitled at concerts. The exact same thing happened at Sleater Kinney two years ago.

Saturday was good. Didn't feel like I waited in line for anything. Weather was great, crowds were great, it was all great except for getting stuck with a few extra drink tickets at the end as always.
Sorry I didn't really talk to anyone from the board if you saw me wandering around, my friends and I were pretty way gone all day.

Best Early Act - Jeff Rosenstock, easily Best Mid Tier Act - if PJ Harvey is considered mid-tier, her then Best Headliner - Solange Best Change To The Fest - Opening up the blue stage area for more space, adding the food there Worst Change To The Fest - Anything with the entry on Friday (ID's at the gate, 21 & over lines, etc.) Best Food/Drink Purchase - the fries at Legorn Best Merch Purchase - The leaked schedule shirt, of course Worst Food/Drink Purchase - Any beer. Screw them for making the lines that awful with the stupid ticket shit. Act Most Likely To Disappear - Dirty Projectors, sadly. I don't know how long Dave will want to carry it on at this point. Act Most Likely To Blow Up - Jamila, duh Most Disappointing Act - Dirty Projectors easily, that was a trainwreck Best Party of the Weekend - Solange's set Best Time to give into your heatstroke - George Clinton, I had to help one girl out whose friend was passing out from the heat Best Wake Up Call - Colin Stetson Best Surprise Find - Jeff Rosenstock Best College Déjà vu - Realizing it's been 22 years since PJ Harvey released To Bring You My Love, while I was in college Best Crowd - Solange Worst Crowd - LCD maybe Best Comeback - PJ Harvey Best Cover - Don't recall any Best Looking/Best Dressed - Dawn Richard had the best hair of the weekend, otherwise PJ Harvey has aged remarkably well Underrated Act - Hamilton Leithauser Overrated Act - Cherry Glazer Best Crowd Banter - ? Act Most Likely To Play Pitchfork 2018 - The Avalanches lol yeah right Best Non-musical Activity - Eating too many Clif bars

Also, I really don't understand why most of the venues started their aftershows at 8:30. I did go to Tyondai Braxton, I left Tribe's set after 3 or 4 songs, and got over there while the opening act was finishing. Tyondai went on at 10:00 sharp, and was finished by 10:40. If anyone tried to get there after the headliner, they would have caught maybe 10 or 15 minutes of the set at the most.
I told a few people about it, Tyondai's set was pretty good, he was very focused on twiddling his knobs on his instruments and such, he wasn't paying attention that his low battery warning came up on his laptop and on the screen, and no one could try to sneak up to plug it in until it was too late, so it shut down at 10:40, and he basically just ended his set at that point too.

I don't know, I could see him just stopping it now that Amber is gone, and this album could be his way of wrapping it up. Obviously he could do solo/some other band things. But given how much effort he seemed to put into this set, I could see him just ending it.
