Whoever picks the score probably doesn't even read the review, and I have a suspicion they didn't even listen to the album. I mean, a 7.1 is accurate to me. But the review reads worse than that, and a 7.1 seems so... i dunno... calculated? Like, not too harsh but not glowing. The more and more I see their scores, knowing what we know now about the reviewers, just seems more politically motivated than an actual critique of the material.
Comparatively, looking at Paste Magazine since they have the same scoring method (but worse writers/taste) I feel like they actually believe in the score they are giving it.

Review was a good read. Always fun when a piece of criticism contains the words "farted", "fuckery" and "unrepentant asshole".  Her take on "Violent Crimes" is where I am with that song. It is pretty much unlistenable for me because it is so cringey. |

The Nine Inch Nails just got a Best New Track from P4K for "Over and Out." Well deserved too, but in addition to the 8.0, comes as a bit of a shock. Next highest score (excluding reissues) is 7.5 for the Slip.

Over at Stereogum some guy was spouting off that deafheaven would get a 9 at least. I said 8.4.
P4ks review for the first DP single was overly harsh so I'm guessing 7.0 if not lower.

I don't see the word 'classic', I see 'significant album from the past'. And that Prodigy album was fairly big when it came out - debuted at #1, and for a minute it looked like techno would be the next big thing. Even though I think the album deserves higher than a 5.9, I'm glad they're reviewing albums that made an impact, even if, in retrospect, they haven't held up (or weren't that good to start with). |

Kinda shocked at the score for Empress Of. I was expecting somewhere in the 8.3-8.6 range given how many places are blubbering over it.
