a few albums that i will throw in: rockpile - seconds of pleasure. this is a delightfully rollicking power-pop album. talk talk - spirit of eden. i know this gets a lot of love in the scope of influencing some major bands, but it's also a pretty good album on its own. richard & linda thompson - shoot out the lights. this might be the best album recorded by a couple while their marriage was falling apart. token entry - jaybird. behind some all-time cover art is a great NYHC record that i've always been a little surprised isn't lauded more against its peers. I would also be genuinely curious what your list would look like Seconded - this is a very unique sampling

anyone mention making movies or love over gold from dire straits? i liked those better than brothers in arms. edit: well, totp deserves better than that line above... so here's a story. summer 1985 i had a choice - see dire straits in concert or heart. they were back-to-back nights here in okc and i only had enough money to go see one, so teenage boy me chose heart because 1985 heart was hawt. older me regretted that decision for so many years until i finally saw mark knopfler solo live in 2001 to kinda make up for that. Your list would be better than most TOTP's in the history of this board

why is paul's boutique not on that list. pretty sure it's doolittle. oh my god i forgot about the stone roses. My simple review is if kb and I are the only ones with this in our top 40 I'm gonna start yelling at some of you motherfuckers. that would be a damn shame but honestly idk how this thing works so i prob won't even make a list lol There is no way that anything in this post is meaner of me for doing or bringing up then that time I put you against BDBU in the first ever "boarder brackets". I think you can put 30 albums in somewhat of an order lol please don't kill me

Maybe I'll even take the train to Long Island this fall and finally see them live. Holy shit there’s a boatload of tickets available for this show. And they have the 200 level blocked off! And they’re crazy expensive. There’s a Lucero show that night but I’d consider doing JP instead. If prices tank and the stars otherwise align, we can take the Dosomobile out there.

This might not even be The Cure's best record according to the data I'm not actively looking at My Disintegration take is that "Untitled" is the second best song on the album (I would say best but 'Pictures of You' exists).

Love seeing the lists pop up in the other thread! They've all been awesome and have added new stuff to my listening queue (lately, Love and Rockets and Carcass). Meanwhile, I revisited this gem today. I won't have it as high as teekoh, but it's easily one of my five favorite hip hop records of the 80s. It's just a bright, fun listen - like an instant mood pickmeup. "Eye Know," as I've mentioned before, is probably my favorite use of sampling ever, mashing up Steely Dan's "Peg" and Otis' "Sittin'..." I borrowed my wife's copy of this CD and would listen to it - and this track in particular - over and over again the summer we first started going out. It is a pretty long listen, with lots of skits in between. But it's worth your time and energy. I'd go so far as to say that it's one of the most fun albums ever made, 80s or otherwise.

Id go to one of the Roger Waters shows at MSG tonight or tomorrow if I didn’t have fantasy football drafts both nights.

Another contender for the top spot on my list. This record bore a groove into my skull the first time I heard it, and it has stuck there ever since. More understated than J's later work as Spiritualized, this is a straight-up psychedelic trip from ecstasy to agony. I've talked before about records that create their own soundscapes, their own universes that you inhabit for 40 minutes or more. The Perfect Prescription is a, well, perfect example of this. J and Sonic drip their guitars in the haziest reverb I've ever heard and glide you through some of their most memorable songs ( Walkin' With Jesus is the big hit, but Ode To Street Hassle somehow manages to be even more glassy eyed than Lou Reed's original). The record's peak hits on Ecstasy Symphony / Transparent Radiation, one of my favorite songs of all time. I love this song so much I named my college radio show after it. A beautiful, shimmering slice of string-aided psychedelia. One thing I noted on this relisten, there's hardly any drums on the whole record. After the opening blaze of " Take Me To The Other Side" you have to wait until the gentle shuffle of " Come Down Easy," the album's second to last track, to hear more. If you love Spiritualized's noisy feedback freakouts, you've got something for you here ( Things'll Never Be The Same). If you love their gentle drifters, you've got that in spades (especially " Feel So Good"). It may just be my favorite J Spaceman project, and that's amongst a discography of masterpieces. Spacemen 3 forever and ever.

Noticing a severe lack of Branca on folks' lists. This one, The Ascension, is a masterpiece and maybe the only album I can think of (leaving aside his other works) that can be described as a classical noise rock piece. Basically what we have here is layers upon layers of alternatively tuned guitars created a tremendously powerful, moving, occasionally dronelike cacophony. There are no melodies here. No vocals. Just a sweltering noise both holy and unholy. Light Field (In Consonance) is my favorite track, it's all adrenaline and energy. Honestly, I think it's one of the coolest things ever done with an electric guitar. Branca was a major scene figure in New York no wave / experimental circles. And it should be no surprise that Lee Ranaldo plays on this record and Thurston Moore was an acolyte of Branca's. Sort of like how John Cale got his start with the La Monte Young Theatre for Eternal Music, this was the catalyst that birthed Sonic Youth, Swans, and legions of other noise freaks to follow. You won't really have a choice, but play it loud.

Waterboys are kind of a criminally underrated band. Kind of like the Scottish U2? At least that's what their earlier records sound like. This Is The Sea is a remarkable record, and one that juuuust narrowly missed out on my Top 100 (you may recognize their biggest hit "The Whole of the Moon" from that album). Fisherman's Blues, however, explores territories that Bono & Co never quite touched: traditional music. In a sense, then, Fisherman's Blues is something like the Waterboys' Liege and Leaf, forefronting fiddle and folk melodies as much as the guitar and expansive synth/drum textures of their previous output. The records are stunning. The title track alone is enough to stop you in your tracks - highlighting some stirring mandolin and fiddle playing alongside singer Mike Scott's impassioned vocals. Other highlights include rollicking, rovering 9-minute epic "And a Bang on the Ear" and maybe the best Van Morrison cover I've ever heard, a tremendous take on "Sweet Thing" from Astral Weeks. There's some trad instrumental interludes, yes, but this isn't a full Swarbrick-styled reimagining. The roots of their Big Music sound are still there - it's all just very earthen now. And happily, this shift resulted in their most spirited and heavenly record.

And there you have it! By my count, I've now reviewed or otherwise written about every album on my Top 100 list, as well as some others in consideration that didn't quite make the cut. Didn't expect this to actually go this far, but I had such a good time doing these little reviews (most took like 5-10 minutes to write-up) that I just kept going.
Well. Time to actually order my list!

3 Haterings in This Thread this Evening: 1. zircona1 I'm sorry I didn't shame you into making a list but also I felt like you already submitted the list? It's ok to tell me I was wrong and so hopped on whatever last night I didn't remember. Thank you for making a list. Does Hitt Rexx ship? 2. Let the record show I would've had Fisherman's Blues on my hypothetical list You can even ask your partner if he's got albums to add in a hypothetical list I don't care make a list you can name 30 80s album otherwise I will make you lose all your cred at sleeping village when they eventually book the Dream Syndacate 3. reviewzz any thoughts on 80s albums this worked last time I know you have a statistically higher probability of answering the call

In that case I'm throwing my double vote behind Pretty Hate Machine. Man you better cause looks like that album ain't gonna make the top 50 if the polls ended today When is this due and what is the minimum number I need to submit? I leave for Denver tomorrow on a family vacation and my bandwidth will be pretty limited until Monday.

I guess you and mookie can respectively be informed that lists are due Monday September 5 and that 30 albums officially puts your ballot in the running. Unlike Trump I am not requesting 11,800 votes for whatever I'm upset about.
