Pyromania is the god damn truth and should be the first listen for anyone looking for new old music this summer. C'mon my friend I know you got 30 albums from the 1980s in you Lol I just noticed this quote. I'm sure I could rustle up something. There'd be at least 3 Def Leppard albums on the list.

Waterboys are kind of a criminally underrated band. Kind of like the Scottish U2? At least that's what their earlier records sound like. This Is The Sea is a remarkable record, and one that juuuust narrowly missed out on my Top 100 (you may recognize their biggest hit "The Whole of the Moon" from that album). Fisherman's Blues, however, explores territories that Bono & Co never quite touched: traditional music. In a sense, then, Fisherman's Blues is something like the Waterboys' Liege and Leaf, forefronting fiddle and folk melodies as much as the guitar and expansive synth/drum textures of their previous output. The records are stunning. The title track alone is enough to stop you in your tracks - highlighting some stirring mandolin and fiddle playing alongside singer Mike Scott's impassioned vocals. Other highlights include rollicking, rovering 9-minute epic "And a Bang on the Ear" and maybe the best Van Morrison cover I've ever heard, a tremendous take on "Sweet Thing" from Astral Weeks. There's some trad instrumental interludes, yes, but this isn't a full Swarbrick-styled reimagining. The roots of their Big Music sound are still there - it's all just very earthen now. And happily, this shift resulted in their most spirited and heavenly record. This is such a great record and one I listened to heavily back in the day. I’ll have it ranked around 30th on my list.

A perfect album. Listening to this for the first time (maybe like 6 years ago?) was a real eye opening moment for me in regards to what punk could be, and the power of traditional music. Definitely a pretty direct thru-line from that to my later deep dives into pre-revival American folk music and my current obsession with all things Fairport Convention. This album really does have it all. From tin whistle bangers (Sick Bed) to drum heavy stompers (Sally MacLennane), dreary-eyed tales of heartache (A Pair of Brown Eyes), and one of the greatest ballads of all time (The Band Played Waltzing Matilda). This era of the Pogues is on my shortlist of bands I would time travel to see. God bless you, Shane MacGowan. Such a fucking heater. Didn't realize Elvis Costello produced this one. A serious riser as I'm polishing off my list. Might crack the top 10!

i decided early on to cap my list at 50 and was a little surprised at how many albums i enjoy didn't make the cut. but i also felt like outside of the top 10-15 that the order could change if i made that list three months ago or two weeks from now. this was a fun task re-listening to a handful of albums i hadn't heard in many years.

For a while, Black Sea was my favorite XTC album. I think it's their most consistently strong record start to finish, but I now feel that English Settlement has a lot of their best songs, even if there is some limp material in the middle. Yeah, this was a fun project. I had no clear front-runner for the #1 spot.

rainbow stew has always been far and away my favorite album from the 1980's; the other 44 were tough to decide, but that spot was easy.

English Settlement, Skylarking, and Oranges & Lemons were also on my short list and probably would've been bunched in the 50s/60s if my list was longer.

See I hate making this list, because I finally started getting one going, and then I just remember Operation Mindcrime, and now I have to reorder a bunch of shit

Some thoughts after working on this on/off for well more than a month's time: A) Full list submitted with seven minutes to spare fuck yeah. B) My own personal guardrails: no greatest hits, no live albums, no EPs, no movie soundtracks. C) My list represents music I actually listened to in the '80s with a very few exceptions of music I discovered in the early '90s (e.g., my introduction to Eleventh Dream Day was 1991's Lived to Tell, but I began getting into their back catalog shortly thereafter). D) I owned the majority of the albums on my list on vinyl back in the day plus a handful on cassette from Columbia House and a few more on cassette that I duped from friends. E) Had Neil Diamond's The Jazz Singer at the tail end of my list to own the libs, but thought better of it re: the no soundtracks rule. F) I love VU, but ultimately I don't think a collection of outtakes from the '60s belongs on an '80s list. G) Although Boston's Third Stage mostly sucks, it was a big deal when it came out with a shitton of hype leading up to the release. I thought about leaving it in my final spot for nostalgia, but I swapped it out for The Who's Face Dances at the last moment (a record with three great songs and a lot of filler). H) I'm a little disheartened that no other board members found a spot in their Top 100 for any Soul Asylum records from the '80s. None of them are perfect, but at least give Hang Time a listen. Thanks in advance for crunching the numbers, Tweet

I don’t think I’ll get everything out today but we should be off the ground today. Obviously my plans went a lil sideways the last few days. Appreciate your patience
