Destiny is easily Top 5 this year for me. It's an album that rewards you for your time and for those who have slept on DJ Sabrina, don't. I think I'm on my fifth listen and it's a blast discovering 90s-2000s TV commercials/film/show samples.

Yeah I think if I knew she was like an ecstatic 90s/00s-pop-centric Avalanches, I woulda gotten around to her stuff sooner. Sooo much good stuff that only gets better on repeated listens.

Was looking at that Uncut list and had never heard of their #1 despite digging a lot of the stuff on the list and thought it was pretty cool. Had no idea Paul Simon put out an album this year and it was #2 so listened and wow is it bad lol. Felt like a parody of “what if Paul Simon made Blackstar”. Endless cringe

More people should give the new Califone a shot. It's wonderful.

As far as emo albums outside of Home Is Where I've really enjoyed the new Origami Angel and Hot Mulligan.

Today we're talkin' about... Nourished By Time - Erotic Probiotic 2Now here's a guy who absolutely came outta nowhere for me this year. Didn't check him out until he got late-added to P4k fest, and maaan did this album dominate my late-summer listening. It's deliciously woozy, but never sleepy. Features some of the coolest and most hypnotic vocal performances of the year. And it updates the sonic palettes of 2010s indie RnB but this time featuring real hooks! It's essential walkin' around on a hot evening music. It's the Sampha album we deserved. It's got one of the absolute best tracks of the year ("Shed That Fear") and will probably land somewhere in/near my top 5. What did y'all think? Did you like it? Hate it? What other artists came outta nowhere to dominate your 2023 listening?

I watched the P4k set on the webcast and really enjoyed it. Haven’t listened to the record yet.

I checked it out after he was added to the lineup and didn't care for it. I might revisit it, otherwise not sure what I'm missing here.

Double dipping today to bring you a more unheralded release... Cian Nugent - She Brings Me Back to the Land of the LivingFor a certain head, this will blow your mind. If you've ever enjoyed a Steve Gunn record - this is for you. If you dig Richard Thompson's more psyched out electric stuff w/ Linda - this is for you. If Aquarium Drunkard is bookmarked on your computer - this is for you. If you often find yourself seeing shows at Union Pool, The Hideout, or Constellation - this is for you. It's beautiful Irish psychedelic folk from one of the most sublime guitarists on the scene. Gorgeous and lush acoustic playing and then some of the gnarliest electric jams of 2023 (see: Pass The Time Away, High Up Airplane). He's like if William Tyler could sing. Do check it out - it's one of the year's best and compliments crisp fall air perfectly. What are some hidden gems from 2023 that you feel passionately about?

i've been digging the melenas album Ahora pretty hard lately. there's some stereolab in here. several songs earworm their way in my head for hours. i can't imagine it not ending up in my top 20 for the year.

I want to make sure this one gets some attention, since a few of us noticed it when it was released and it's going to rank high on my list. Kind of a mix between Gang of Youths and Hold Steady, pretty earnest straightforward midwest-type rock (even though they are from LA), with some pretty dark lyrics against some pretty great riffs. Probably my favorite track on the album:

Find Out by filth is eternal has been a very pleasant surprise for me this year. i really haven't listened to a lot of harder punk lately, but i've been enjoying this one. songs are fast, loud, and quick.

Yo this was awesome - extremely Stereolab like you said, plus some of these basslines go super hard and groove in heavy ways. Loving "K2" especially.

Dunno about passionate but some under sung favorites
Prewn - Through the Window: folky rock with some strain. Vocals akin to Adrienne Lenker if she were a cat.
Slow Pulp - Yard: just damn good gaze-pop
The Telescopes - Experimental Health / Of Tomorrow: two albums with very different vibes. The former is probably the most accessible the band has sounded since their debut in 1989.
Be Your Own Pet - Mommy: one of the better reunion albums.
Holy Wave - Five of Cups: closer "Happier" is what hooked me on the noisy gazey band.
MIKE - Burning Desire: probably his most versatile and vibrant project yet.
Sweeping Promises - Good Living Is Coming For You: semi-local band, their debut had more Deerhunter vibes but this one flips the production a bit more prickly.
I'll also stan the Wednesday album. I'm sure there's some hot takes on them but I truly love Rat Saw God and they ripped live.

And,
Additionally,
Also,
I'd also add,
And maybe some other stuff that Pitchfork probably gave like a 7 to or something. But I think all 4 of those will be in my top 50. Passion is another word that means nothing anymore

Gonna add that Prewn record to my queue! Sounds like something that may be up my alley. Edit: Oh yea and I literally bought a ticket today to see Wednesday next year. “Chosen to Deserve” is probs SOTY

The Pigsx7 album is indeed great. I’ll also throw the Fielded, Sunrot, and Oxbow albums out there as ones folks might have overlooked.

Any love for MSPAINT? Debut is basically nu metal with non dogshit lyrics. Also Militarie Gun's debut on was solid too.
