Yeah, Javelin is pretty much locked in as my AOTY right now. It didn't have quite the impact for me that Carrie & Lowell did, but it's still up there. Shit Talk would definitely be on my song of the year list for sure too. It's already a sad and emotionally heavy album, but it was just crushing finding out that his long time lover died during the process of making the album.

This might end up top 20 for me, possibly higher. I remember it being very uhhh divisive upon release but that was almost a whole year ago when you think about it Edit- something I didn't realize until finding the wikipedia page for this album is that Patrick Wemberley, aka the dude from Chairlift, plays on every song on this album and like, a bunch of other stuff I either like or liked at some point in the last decade. Kinda neat. Chairlift was incredibly underrated.

Most disappointing from 2023 (alpha order): boygenius - The Record Zach Bryan - s/t The National x2
Side note: I think I might also be done spending $ on National concerts
Most meh/unmemorable from 2023 (alpha order): Alex Lahey - The Answer Is Always Yes PJ Harvey - I Inside the Old Year Dying Screaming Females - Desire Pathway Tommy Stinson's Cowboys in the Campfire - Wronger White Reaper - Asking For a Ride
2023 album I hoped to enjoy based on One Great Song, but devolves into noisy trash: Wednesday - Rat Saw God

Anyone listen to Daniel Donato yet? He's probably the next star in the jam band scene. Trey Anastasio approved and played with Billy & the Kids, so he's the real deal.
RIYL Rose City Band, Billy Strings, etc.

Saw him at Brooklyn Bowl last month and absolutely loved the show. Dude played for like 3 hours.

Here we go - the final week of my 2023 write-ups. Today we have... Dougie Poole - The Rainbow Wheel of DeathEasily the record I listened to most in 2023. It's tremendously catchy, heartfelt, wry, and - in a new-ish twist for Dougie - often emotionally devastating. Dougie is a Brooklyn cowboy. This both describes his geographical homebase, and epitomizes his music. Now, this is not a dig. Dougie isn't gonna put on boots and pretend to be a cowpoke, unlike a certain son of a prominent politico. He's a 30-something dude who loves old country, and lives in a dying country. He sings about what he knows. The existential dread of dead-end office jobs. Daydreaming about the post-service buffet while on the way to yet another funeral. And - in one of 2023's best songs (High School Gym) - being haunted by the slow, unceasing accumulation of departed friends and loved ones. His previous records tackled these themes with tongue planted a little more in-cheek (see: Vaping on the Job, Buddhist for a Couple Days, Laptop), but Rainbow Wheel is a clear-eyed portrayal of a bleary world. And this analogy extends to his instruments as well. He's cleaned up the corners, dropped the early MagFields filters, brought his voice to the forefront, and let tasteful but still a bit off-kilter band shine. It's the 2023 record that has made me laugh the most. It's also the 2023 record that's made me cry the most. And all in all, I'd call it the best country record of the year, the best songwriter record of the year, and maybe even the best album of the year. Did you hear this one? What did you think? What about your AOTY frontrunner do you like most?

S/o to Cole Pulice at #25. This list is fine. Whatever. Yeezy Boots shoulda been #1, but A&W is a good choice too.

C-tier rising jam band. They're a fun time if that's your speed (I like them), but way more on the wook spectrum than Donato. As always, if they could write songs that are actually somewhat memorable, they'd be going somewhere.

Busy day for lists I guess This one rules. Immeasurably better than P4k's list. Edit: It seriously rules that Stereogum rides so hard for Ratboys, The Tubs, DJ Sabrina, and loads of others who had big years but weren't deemed Critically Approved / Cultural Important choices for whatever reason.

One more time - for your consideration... Jaimie Branch - Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war))Jaimie Branch is dead. Long live Jaimie Branch. I've talked about her before on here, but it's hard to measure the effect Jaimie had on the NY/Chicago/London jazz scenes in her short life. Her trumpet playing was bold, incisive, and beautifully brash. And so - by all accounts - was she. A preeminent collaborator, Jaimie played all over the place. I saw her in ensembles with Yonatan Gat, Alabaster DePlume, and sitting in with Yo La Tengo and Kikagaku Moyo. Shit, she even appeared on my college buddy Eli Winter's latest record. Her ensemble Fly or Die also put out a pair of essential records, leading up to this masterpiece, posthumously shepherded to completion by Branch's sister. It's perfect. Jaimie's records are like rallying cries against a fucked up world. They confront human ugliness with compassion and beauty. They push back. They raise a joyful noise. And this one does all that and more. These songs abound with beauty, with love, with energy. Check out the buoyant "Baba Louie" or the sleek "Borealis Dancing". The Appalachian-tinged harmonized vocals of "The Mountain," the punk-jazz clarion call of "Take Over the World". This record may as well be the thesis statement of Jaimie's life. A rich, joyful study of humanity. A stand against complacency. And a reminder to defend the beauty we hold dear. "Trust me. Just for a moment. Believe me. The future lives inside us. Don't forget to fight. Don't forget to fight. Don't forget. Don't forget. Don't forget."

IMO Pitchfork really needs to start elevating rising artists again instead of giving Album of the Year to the biggest stars on the planet. It's basically the equivalent of Rolling Stone's AOTY being like U2 or Foo Fighters all the time.

A quick one today, but another big 2023 favorite: Youth Fathers - Heavy HeavyI knew from the first 60 seconds of "Rice" that Heavy Heavy was gonna be one of my most-listen-to records of 2023. It's all in the energy - the slow build from the bass, the drop into the background harmonica part, the entrance of the bouncing percussion and handclaps. And fuck, the vocals are crazy good. There's like 5 different melodies in this song and they're all catchy as hell. By the time I finished the track, I had goosebumps. Hell yes, let's fuckin' go. And what's more? The rest of the record does not let up. No band had better vocals in 2023. Their three-part harmonies are insane, the layering and looping, the use of chanting, shouting, half-rapped spoken word, choral flourishes - it's almost overwhelming. And it helps that the album's instrumentation is somewhat minimal. Not sparse, mind you. But it's largely synths, pounding toms, and driving bass beats. The music serves to drive the vocal melodies forward, to snowball the songs with energy until everything explodes to a grand finish (See: "I Saw", "Drum"). Heavy Heavy is a wonderful piece of music. Some of the most awe-inspiring stuff I've heard this year. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Did you hear this one? What did you think? What were your favorite vocal moments or melodies of the year?

Well imo pitchfork needs to stop giving album of the year to an album that didn’t come out in said year.

From obmit's list, I know this is one of those autocorrect functions here, but this really should be the actual title of the album for the rest of the world 46. Tirzah - trip9love...
