the last 3 albums (Euphoric, The Window, Garden Party) are very likely to rank highly on my year-end list.
Euphoric hooked me right away and i thought it was a significant step forward from the last album. The Window and Garden Party took me a little longer to get into. and while i agree with the above that Garden Party isn't RSB's best, i've really enjoyed where ratboys headed on The Window and would put it even with Printer's Devil in my head. "black earth, wi", especially, was a highlight.

I thought the Bully album was fine, but really not in the best of the year or anything Another I want to draw attention to is Euphoric by Georgia. It's been a really good year for dance pop, and this is up there with Jessie Ware and Romy as the best of that genre in the year. Georgia had another great album in 2020, but obviously there was no tour for that one. She's only played NYC and LA on tour for this one so far, so hopefully that changes this festival season. The whole album is co-written and produced by Rostam too, which is a huge plus. Title track is still probably my favorite on the album: Agreed on Bully. I found it generic and easily their worst.

I really like the pinkpantheress album and the Sexxy Red album. Childers was good though it looks like you listed the 2017 record on there instead but hey, it’s also good

A quick one today since I was listening to it yesterday: Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want To Turn Into YouPretty easily my favorite pop album of the year. Also one whose shine never really wore off for me (sorry, Lana). And! And!!! It wins the coveted award for Best Bagpipes Feature of the Year! Not to mention the only good thing Grimes did in 2023. Caroline rules, and this was probably my favorite thing she's done since Chairlift, maybe ever. Did you hear this one? What did you think? What were your favorite pop albums/singles from 2023?

I know its the name of the album and everything but when she sings "desire, I want to turn into you" on Welcome to my Island it was one of those flooring "oh yeah i liiiiike this" moments of the year for me

Catching up on releases I missed throughout the year. The Bethany Cosentino album is really really bad.
You could tell she listened to Saint Cloud a bunch and thought "I could do that too!"

Gonna try and crank out some more of these write-ups this week. Its been a fun way to revisit the year's faves. So today is... Yo La Tengo - This Stupid WorldProbably 2023's best example of "Great veteran band releases another great album" - but this one seemed to push even beyond that limitation. I saw lots of folks crowning this the best of their later period, and it even snagged a nice BNM from the fork. I think a lot of that reaction comes from them finally dialing up the noise for the vast majority of this project. "Brain Capers" is a classic Ira live freakout, "This Stupid World" nails their monstrous glimmering drone sound (and features the record's best couplets). Other tracks aren't as in-your-face noisy, but they match YLT's pop sensibilities with quick tempos, rock-forward guitars, and/or irresistible organ tones (Sinatra Drive, Fallout). My favorite moments, tho, are when the group lets Ira cook with goopy, cosmic-soup textures. Thinking here of the solos on "Apology Letter" (my fave track here), or "Sinatra Drive Breakdown". Georgia's highlight "Aselestine" has a bit of this feel too, in acoustic mode. Is it their best? Probably not - but who really cares. Yo La Tengo is one of indie rock / America's Great Bands, ever expanding and touching up the edges of their signature sound. For me, it's probably their best since Popular Songs, but I find ranking their discography somewhat difficult. It's all so fucking good anyways. Did you hear this one? What did you think? Does it stand out to you in their discography? Why / why not?

I guess I will also make some #content. All of these are re-listens unless otherwise noted. Mike Dimes- Houston rapper. Loud. Has a song called Arsenal with Denzel Curry that's one of my favorite hip-hop songs this year. Apparently has an album from last year with even more streams I need to check out. Probably not making my list. Hoping he shows up on Lolla's lineup next year. Local Natives- I used to have some serious opinions on Local Natives about a decade ago and now they're just one of those bands from the brief period the internet was good that have kinda just faded into the background, like The Shins and Band of Horses and etc. This isn't bad but it's not particularly interesting, and I won't have it on my list I don't think. Colter Wall- I remember feeling the same way on this listen as I did my first listen- disappointed I didn't like it more. Might still make my list. I have probably played "Motorcycle" about 65 times in the last week. Palehound- Opening for Jason Isbell later this winter which was enough motivation for me to go out and purchase tickets to finally see him. This is my favorite Palehound album since 2017's- I feel bad typing I can't remember anything about her/they're last 2 albums but it's the truth, but the first four songs are up there with the best 4-song runs of albums this year for me, which is also the truth. This is moving onto my list based on this today's listen, I'm pretty sure. Paris Texas- When I went to Coachella on Sunday the guy I talked to on the shuttle ride there was hoping to get there in time to see these guys, a Los Angeles rap duo. We had nothing else going on so we checked them out- the couple thousand folks who were there had an absolute blast, and the Paris Texas guys did too. Local show. Love to see it. Anyway this album came out in July and has a couple of truly standout tracks ("DnD", "Closed Captioned", "Panic!!") but also suffers from a lot of albums these days where it's like 10 minutes longer than it really needs to be. I am Abe Simpson now. They sold out Lincoln Hall earlier this year and I expect they'll be on the Lolla lineup. I think this album will be on my list.

Albums from this year that stink*, in no particular order:
That Yo La Tengo album Unknown Mortal Orchestra The extremely depressed nothing.nowhere Carly Rae Jepsen That Paramore album, remember that Paramore album? That first National album that came out this year (but not the 2nd one) QOTSA All 3 Guided by Voices albums- you would think a year when Bob does 3 one of them would land for me, but nope, not this time. Love you, Bob. J Hus- still bummed about this one
*these are all the albums top of mind where I went in with high expectations and they weren't met. They don't actually stink, please don't yell at me about any of this

And yea that Paramore album stunk. Some other letdowns from this year: — Squid — Boygenius — Kali Uchis — Zach Bryan — Allison Russell And various rising buzz bands that I just don’t vibe with yet (Model / Actriz, Bar Italia, MSPaint (who sound like 3OH!3 to me, which is why I may eventually come around to them).

Both the J Hus and Giggs albums were subpar, and Slowthai was just ok. Were there any good UK rap records?
I thought the Kali Uchis album was good enough. Most disappointing for me were the Drain and US Girls records.

Agreed on Janelle Monae and Squid on the most disappointing albums of the year, also would throw in
Shame (last one was one of AOTY for me, barely listened to this one) The Armed (3 pretty good songs and plenty of filler, another bland follow up to a AOTY contender) Fred Again/Brian Eno (I know it was mostly an Eno album but it was a bore)
