Bjork MISSY ELLIOTT DIANAAAAA ROOOOOSSSSS (speaking this into existence for like the third straight year, maybe it’ll happen this time) Pls god let me have this before P4k Fest starts booking like Hozier or whoever else GQ wants to profile So I decided to take a quick peak at the GQ Music site and found that the artists they have covered so far this month: Victoria Monet Jason Isbell Vince Staples Awich Ekkstacy Playboi Carti So it appears that GQ’s music coverage actually correlates fairly strongly with Pitchfork’s. Which I guess is good for Pitchfork remaining Pitchfork, but also seems to make Pitchfork rather redundant. I’m wondering if this ends up something like the GQ Music section IS Pitchfork. Like how when I watch sports on ABC it has the ESPN crawl and whatever. I mostly just don’t understand the point of all this, but I’m no capitalism! |

People online saying pitchfork has been so great as a publication the last 8 years have been confusing the shit out of me. It sucks that it’s folding but it hasn’t had teeth since like 2018

I think their reviews have been terrific and I love the expanded coverage of different genres that they didn't really focus on before. I still read them weekly to find new artists to check out.
Their insistence on covering megastars like Ariana Grande, Post Malone, etc has been baffling though.

People online saying pitchfork has been so great as a publication the last 8 years have been confusing the shit out of me. It sucks that it’s folding but it hasn’t had teeth since like 2018 Editorially they've def gotten stale - i.e. most of their big scores and EOY lists have become predictable. And their news features often read more like Billboard or a trade publication. But they've also been the biggest publication to consistently shine a light on underground, international, and experimental music via their reviews section, even if they don't go all the way To Bat for that stuff anymore. No other pubs with the reach of Pitchfork are spotlighting avant-jazz on their front page, then turning around and writing several thousand words on Au Pairs. Pitchfork was still a good tool of music discovery, and full of people passionate about interesting music. Unfortunately, most of them are either a.) now laid off, or b.) freelancers. |
