Thank you so much Timbo. I was actually relistening to Sleep Well Beast yesterday morning for the first time in a whike and thought I'd placed it too low on my list. Glad to see it didn't need my help at all.

i did another heavy binge on the drive to and from stl this weekend and i think the only major change i might make before posting my final list on fb is St Vincent moving up a spot or two. real obsessed with that one still.

aww man I forgot that Rolling Blackouts album came out this year. Figured it would have counted for an EP.

I still don't think I have a finalized list, but I have some thoughts about albums this year and this thread doesn't have nearly the amount of chatter I remember it having in the past, so here goes: Albums from the top 50 I saved to spotify having never heard them before: Elder, Kelela, Manchester Orchestra. Albums I saved again because I haven't listened to them as much but maybe should've: St. Vincent, Sheer Mag, Priests, Phoebee Bridgers, Fever Ray. Would highly recommend more people check out that Palehound album if you haven't, I feel like almost everyone on here would like it to some degree People who liked the Dirty Projectors album: why? I thought it was cool when it first came out but it really soured on me on multiple listens. I know this is not vintage Dirty Projectors (which full disclosure I was not a fan of when it came out), but I think that's my biggest headscrather about this list Everything Now is a good album. "Fun" "Facts" about Your Top Albums- Kendrick Lamar has tied Kanye for the most appearances in the top 10, with 3. - The most albums that were listed as no. 1 were Big Thief's "Capacity" and King Krule's "The Ooz," each with 3. Neither cracked the top 10. - Former AOTY winners Father John Misty (2015, and 2012 depending on which list you accept) and Run the Jewels (2014), didn't crack the top 20, and is each artists lowest ranking release on our lists. - (Just gonna leave this here) There are three artists currently being accused of sexual assault and/or violence towards women on our list. - The highest scoring album that appeared on the fewest lists was Mount Eerie's "A Crow Looked at Me" on only 7 lists. - Biggest drop between releases was the Japandroids, who were no. 4 on our 2012 list. - Tyler, The Creator hasn't appeared on our list since 2011, despite releasing albums in 2013 and 2015. - Both of Cut Copy's previous albums cracked the top 10. This year, they only appeared on two lists and accumulated only 59 points. - Priests' "Nothing Feels Natural" is the highest ranking debut album. - 37 of the top 50 albums are rock related. - Sleep Well Beast has the 2nd smallest AOTY point total, above only M83's "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" from 2011. Enjoy! The songs list is forthcoming, and it's really bad. Not bad like crappy songs (that too) but there's very little overlap between lists. This one was clear by like the 7th list or so. I really enjoyed this post. I think it's cool that you went and pulled data from our previous lists as well for this. Thanks for digging up some history about it all. I think it'd be kind of interesting to have people develop new lists based only on what albums are included in this top 50. Not going to happen, but I'd imagine we'd have some new top 10 entrants. I really enjoyed this post too. Hell, even a top 20. I know that my list would radically change and some of my favorite albums from this year (including my #1 and #4 albums) would be off the table. I'm not sure I could articulate why I kept Cigarettes After Sex on my list but kept off Brand New. (I didn't care for the Queens album.) I'm not pointing anyone out and I've played out the "separate the art from the artist" argument in my non-board life so many times, but I still feel weird about the situation personally Would be happy to chat with y'all about whatever related to any/all of that over the next few days

I also think Everything Now is a good album, sans a couple really awful tracks on there, and my comment earlier was mostly in regards to how it was received around these parts.
Also I think there's a pretty big difference between CAS where there have been a couple of murmurs of sexual misconduct and Brand New where there have been tons of reports of pretty serious actions. I'm not saying any of it is more admissible, or that the women reporting anything are lying or twisting the truth, but it is a little bit easier to dismiss Brand New because of how clear and open the allegations are. I have a difficult time separating the art from the artist in some cases. For example, Manhattan is a great movie but goddamn is it really inappropriate that it's made by Woody Allen. Because he's so deeply entrenched in the subject material in real life it makes it very hard to watch whereas Annie Hall, for example, doesn't give me that same feeling. At the same time, I know a lot of old rockstars are creeps and the further back you go in time, the more disgusting the dudes were, so if I were to really dig through I would probably stop listening to a lot of what I listen to. Maybe it's a worthwhile effort, but I haven't found myself feeling the need to do so just yet.
Also, does anyone feel the collective of King Gizzard albums would have made it way higher? I feel like if everyone had just clumped all 4 together instead of listing the one they thought really belonged they would have landed higher, but I do still think the idea behind keeping them separate is probably the way to go.

I mean, three of the KG albums should be in the top twenty.

Admittedly I have only really listened to Murder of the Universe, but I did enjoy it a lot

The King Gizzard albums were fine, but Murder of the Universe was the most cohesive one to me, followed by Poly. The other two were meh.
Overall I think 2017 was a great year for music. Critical lists were mostly shit, but thats why we have the board. I'm not at desktop ATM, but for all of the lists, I think I tabulated like 350+ albums, and that's just counting 1-50. Wretched and I each did over 50 albums in our lists. I dare anyone at Stereogum or Paste or even P4k to compare. They may review that many a year, but we all listened to that much music without having to worry about clicks or likes. Just for fun. I think that's a testament to our commitment to music, even if some of us like bad music (FJM) and others like good music (King Krule) we all bring something to the table.
Y'all should feel good about these lists even if your favorite shitty album didn't come in at no.1 it'd be nice if we could get more people to join the board but I think right now we have a lot of diverse tastes. Let's keep it up!

I would bet anything that those P4K, Stereogum, and Paste writers all listen to more music than we do.

I would bet anything that those P4K, Stereogum, and Paste writers all listen to more music than we do. I bet they do too, but unless Julien Baker is PayPaling you daily to market to this message board, no one here listens to that much music bc they have to, it's bc they want to.

Oh it's real friendly up in here. I'm just saying we're better than them bc we don't get paid to listen/like music. Well, most of us anyway.

it's hard to tell when tim's joking cause i legit thought he hated me for liking fjm for a while but anyway yeah tim i do agree with your assessment of our passion for music and how well 2017 went for listeners who arent p4k/stereogum/the like. npr did a wrap up this morning on music and it was pretty good tho they also went with Kdot/Sza for the top 2. which is great but it just feels repetitive at this point.

I'm 90% joking about FJM. I just don't like Pure Comedy.
That sentence has so much potential.

Breaking: The Board Dot hates laughter, humour, children??? In related news: Why has active Board Dot membership topped out in the double digits? Some say the marketing strategy is to blame.

I would bet anything that those P4K, Stereogum, and Paste writers all listen to more music than we do. Yeah and I’m also pretty sure most critical lists were, at the very least, interesting. I enjoyed them a lot more this year than maybe since I first started getting into music. Like even though noisey didn’t even mention a few of my top albums, there was so much stuff I missed and/or didn’t pay attention to this year on it and a few others

Among my (IRL) friends, I easily listen to the most music on an annual basis. This board generally puts me to shame on that front, though. I look at lists from some of you and realize how many albums I missed out on. I'm still catching up on 2007 releases, ffs.

a couple things i learned in this thread:
1. jens put out an album this year and apparently the board likes it. 2. cas guy was accused of sexual misconduct.
