Which card has the best perks? What if you already have TSA PreCheck? What if you got a free t-shirt for signing up for a card in college? What if you still have that shirt? What if you're only 12 and can't sign legally binding agreements?
Put your credit card tips n tricks here.

I have the Southwest card as that's the primary airline I fly - I've been able to get a Companion Pass out of the bonus, so it was worth it. Probably dropping it and switching to a Chase Sapphire later this year once #babyscoots is ready to hop on planes.

Kind of surprised this wasn't already a thread after what just happened in the D4N thread.

I think Chase Sapphire Reserve offers essentially the same perk - you can use your travel credit on Uber or Lyft or any travel (I think).

I want to hear more about the uber thing on Amex as I am a too frequent uber user. We get $15 per month free Uber credits, the first 11 months of the year. In December we get $30. It is a Festivus miracle!

Chase Sapphire Reserve Chase Freedom Chase Freedom Unlimited All travel/restaurant purchases on the CSR All quarterly 5x points purchases on the Freedom Everything else on the Freedom Unlimited Never pay for anything ever again Haha we have this exact same scheme. Worth mentioning the Freedom Unlimited is 1.5x on everything so like all grocery and gas and shopping (that isn't covered by the quarterly 5x)

What's the annual fee on that Amex?

What's the annual fee on that Amex? I think it is/was $275? We are up for renewal in the spring, and I honestly do not remember. Also, there is a $100 annual airline credit for things like baggage/meals etc.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Chase Freedom Chase Freedom Unlimited All travel/restaurant purchases on the CSR All quarterly 5x points purchases on the Freedom Everything else on the Freedom Unlimited Never pay for anything ever again this is me, except i still use CSP. i may switch at some point, but right now the extra fee isn't worth the difference between 2x and 3x. maybe one of these years it will be. i also have an amex that gets 2x on groceries, so i use it only for that.

I only have a BMO/Harris Mastercard since it was my first card, I already use Harris, and it has no annual fee. If I can swing it without damaging my credit score too much, I might switch based on what y'all recommend in this thread.
That said, I don't tend to build up much of a balance on the credit card as I wouldn't exactly describe myself as a baller.

I'm not convinced I would make the annual fee back on any of these cards. Someone do the maths?

I currently have the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the IHG Rewards card. 100% recommend the Sapphire for pretty much anyone who travels at all. Preferred if you only travel a bit and want to avoid big fees, Reserve if you travel a decent amount at all.
I use the IHG Card a lot because we have a corporate code with them and they always fall under my per diem range for work trips where I can save some money, and I've built up a ton of points with them at this point.
Just put in for the United MileagePlus Club card because my work pays the fee. Access for me and a guest to any United Club, free checked bags, and big bonuses on flights booked with them. I wouldn't normally do that one if it wasn't paid for though. Airline wise I'd probably do the Southwest card if I was doing one on my own accord but I'd rather get a general travel card than an airline card

I'm not convinced I would make the annual fee back on any of these cards. Someone do the maths? for me, i was a little nervous about that so i did the chase saphire preferred instead of the reserve. that got me the 50k point signup bonus, and i can use the points to get 1.25x value through the chase travel booking portal. it also doesn't charge a yearly fee for the first year. at the end of the first year, i might just downgrade the card to a chase freedom unlimited so i don't have to pay a yearly fee at all. will have to look then to see if that seems like a good move or not. it having no foreign transaction fee is a plus for me though so i might keep it for that plus the 2x travel/dining rewards points. the points guy is a good blog i've been referred to a couple times to help cover the benefits of credit card rewards. here's the saphire preferred post: thepointsguy.com/guide/5-reasons-to-get-chase-sapphire-preferred/

I'm not convinced I would make the annual fee back on any of these cards. Someone do the maths? I'm pretty sure with the Sapphire Reserve it's really just as simple as: do you spend $300 in Uber or any sort of travel in a year (extremely hard not to do unless you're a hermit)? AND then the $150 left over in fees is regained by the buying power you have on travel (airfare, hotels, cars). So for example, a $450 flight is only $300 worth of points. So there is the $150 right there. And you've got $50,000 free points coming which is worth $750. And like others have said, that's without factoring in the airport lounge access and TSA Precheck (Which are only really benefits if you travel abroad annually or travel for work).

Unless gas counts as a travel expense, I might not spend $300/year.

I wouldn't use the lounge and already have PreCheck (wonder if they'd cover renewal?) so that's a wash, but could probably make the other stuff work.

Not a ton, maybe every other month? That's enough for at least the Preferred card. The first year is free and after that its a $95 fee, and the sign-up bonus is something like $600 in travel credit so that covers the $95 over a few times. And if you just use it on all restaurant purchases and travel you'll probably cover the $95 every year anyway.
When you consider that you get $300 in travel credit with the Reserve though I don't think that's a bad option. That $300 is super easy to use so its only like a $150 fee every year. And that gets covered pretty quickly if you use it for most purchases because you get a lot of points. Also the points are worth 1.5x as much vs 1.25 if you have the preffered, so that $600 is something like $700+. The lounge access seems nice too though only some airports have eligible ones
But yeah I'd at least recommend the Preferred. The fee will be covered quick by the perks

Unless gas counts as a travel expense, I might not spend $300/year. Really? You wouldn't spend $300 combined in hotels, AirBnB, airfare, trains, Ubers/Lyfts, public transit or rental cars?

This is important to remember.
