I had just graduated from high school when it came out. It felt like it was made for people who liked to say they "listened to alternative" but really just listened to pop radio.
Top of the pops, isn't it ironic

I liked Alanis and had Jagged Little Pill and the 2 follow ups, but her music hasn't aged well with me. Heard all those hits too many times, and reading some of her lyrics now, I'm like woof.
My wife and I saw her with Garbage a few years back, she did fine.

It felt like it was made for people who liked to say they "listened to alternative" but really just listened to pop radio. Also, she was pegged as an "angry" female singer, which a lot of people thought was refreshing (ignoring PJ Harvey, etc).

Pitchfork should do an investigative piece about who booked their festival.
On a related note, Pitchfork Music Featival has been on a downward trajectory ever since they got rid of Sparks.

If this was when they stopped having Robinsons rib sandwiches, I completely agree Let’s just assume this was all coincidental or at least within a year or two.

Honest question - did people really not like Alanis when that album came out? I was 10, my sister was 14, she knew every word and so did all her friends who I was in earshot of. Idk how old everyone is here but I call bs on the people saying they weren’t down unless they were old enough to be that sassy. Excited to maybe see her at the fest. I will be 48 years old in less than a month, so I was in college when JLP and the one after it--whatever it was called--came out. I referred to it as blaring cacophony and middle school scribblings for a reason: it's juvenile pop. Her music did not at all compare favorably (and still does not at all compare favorably and never will compare favorably) to the music of women who I was seeing and listening to at the time, like Sonic Youth and PJ Harvey and Elastica and Liz Phair and Tori Amos and Sinead O'Connor. There was SO much interesting stuff being put out by women that was so much better than what Alanis Morissette was doing, yet Alanis Morissette was the one being held up by people as the example of "OMG WOMEN IN THE 90S REALLY CAN ROCK, GUYS." People in the media would fawn over her because they were in awe that she was a woman and young and able to create the music that she was creating, as if young women had never done anything interesting in rock. A lot of people like me--probably who are all closer in age to me than those of you on this board who have fond memories of Alanis--felt it was very insulting not only to the all those women who were releasing good shit at the time and but also the people who were listening to those women. She was also basically manufactured. I've heard multiple times from different places over the years (including a conversation in Rolling Stone between Sinead O'Connor and Courtney Love) that when Alanis was signed Madonna handed her a copy of The Lion and the Cobra and said "Do this." That was a huge turn off back in the 90s when being indie/on an indie and/or listening to indies meant something pretty different than it does now. If people want to like Alanis and her music because they have fun memories of being a little kid and hearing her, clearly they can. A lot of other people don't really share the same feelings, though, because we saw and experienced her music through a very different context back in the day.

Part of the problem seems to be assuming Pitchfork should not bill a pop star. I find it kinda funny that those not liking Alanis are giving the fest a pass for book Carly Rae Jepson who is also a pop star.
edit - not sure why this discussion is in this thread, lol

In 2024, Black Pumas are the best of the 3 headliners of Pitchfork Music Festival 2024, and worse than all 3 acts billed 2nd by a pretty big margin.
They are also better than Muna.

Pitchfork has had many pop acts in the past who I've totally loved. Alanis just doesn't have the same (any?) kind of credibility with much of the audience Pitchfork has seemingly had in the past for reasons I've already mentioned.

Ok, but a lot of what you are citing is not really intrinsic to Alanis (other than your opinion that her music didn’t compare favorably to what you liked). Media and recording industry holding her up as THE woman of rock is not really her fault. Given her age when she was popular, I think it is tough to assume that she was in control of how she was being presented. Also, suggesting she has no cred is silly.
Also, Black Pumas is really the more egregious booking, imo.
We shall see how this sells, but nostalgia is a valid reason to see a show. And, from your comments, it seems that nostalgia has you on the other side of the fence, which is valid.
I wouldn’t buy a ticket to a Alanis show, but I really like the undercard that day and will probably enjoy her set.

I never said any of that was her fault. I know that's not her fault, but I also don't think that means anyone should have to like her any more or any less than they do. I also never said she had no cred at all--clearly, she does with some people. What I said was that she does not have cred with a lot of people who have been part of Pitchfork's audience in the past. If you're going to deny that and say that's "silly," then you're denying the experience of me and many others I know who feel the same way. Hell, my bff laughed when I told her Alanis was headlining this year.

I find it interesting that I’m the one denying the experience of others when you are doing the same thing on the other side of the debate. Clearly some of us here are fine with the booking. I guess I can’t argue with you and your bff who are clearly the entire target demographic for Pitchfork. Shrug

I guess I can’t argue with you and your bff who are clearly the entire target demographic for Pitchfork. Shrug LITERALLY WHERE?cpf asked how/why some people didn't like Alanis. All I did was take the time to explain the perspective some others--NOT ALL--have of her. As part of that, I said: 1. If people want to like Alanis and her music because they have fun memories of being a little kid and hearing her, clearly they can. A lot of other people [THAT DOES NOT MEAN EVERYONE] don't really share the same feelings, though, because we saw and experienced her music through a very different context back in the day. 2. she does not have cred with a lot of people [AGAIN, NOT EVERYONE] who have been part of Pitchfork's audience in the past 3. I also never said she had no cred at all--clearly, she does with some people. [some people = not everyone] Literally where at all am I denying the experience of others? I thought it was obvious, but if you're not on one of the "some people" I was mentioning, then I wasn't talking about you. If I wasn't talking about you, then stop making it about you. I'm not taking anything away from anyone. I'm not saying your experience is wrong or bad. I'm not saying you don't have the right to like her. I'm not saying other people didn't have positive experiences with her and her music. I don't even know why you're being contentious with me other than that you're misreading what I'm saying and then taking offense to things I didn't say. You say you can't argue with me, but I'm not even sure what there would be to argue about because I'm not trying to convince anyone else what they should or shouldn't feel. All I was doing was talking about how I feel and how others I know feel.

You claimd I’m denying others, but there is no evidence of that. I said your opinion was valid, so I’m confused.
Want to point out that my initial comment wasn’t directed at anyone. You pulled me in with your response to my pop star comment. So, it seems you were making it about you.
I’m not offended. I just want to stop talking about Alanis.
