I have tinnitus but it's mainly from listening to music to loud in earbuds for years and years, I think.
I've worn earplugs at every concert I've gone to for years, though. Just sounds better in general.

Just sounds better in general. see, i can't find earplugs that make the sound anything better than muddy. tried hearos, etymotic, dubs, and just regular old foam roll-ups.

Geez, I really appreciate all the responses. I didn't mean to turn this into an after-school PSA about the dangers of loud sounds but I definitely learned a lot here.

How many of you guys have experienced any degree of hearing loss over all of these shows? I'm beginning to think an investment into some nice earplugs would be a good idea. My hearing isn't particularly bad but it also isn't great by any means. I've got a mild case of tinnitus. Thankfully, it only is noticeable when there's no ambient noise, but I really miss being able to enjoy silence. I half blame my listening habits in high school, and half blame the Dinosaur Jr. show where I stupidly stood in front of the stack. I will also vouch for the Etymotics, no other ear plug has worked as well for me. I refuse to go to a show without some sort of earplugs now. I ended up listening to a show from the lobby after I forget them once, rather than risk any more damage. The show was so painfully loud that being the lobby didn't diminish it at all. That show? The Tallest Man on Earth. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've told the story on here before, i went to Soul Asylum/the Jayhawks/Matthew Sweet at the Aragon. I worked my way up front during the first two bands, and ended up in front of a speaker stack. While they were soundchecking Soul Asylum, the guitar was so loud and badly mixed, it definitely did some damage.
That was around 1995, I've been wearing earplugs since. Definitely wear them.

I actually wear hearing aids due to a congenital issue with my kidneys. They tune down volume if it gets too loud, and there's a special setting I can use when I go to concerts.
If I were to wear ear plugs, I basically wouldn't hear anything.

Have had a very mild case of tinnitus ever since Patrick Stickles & Co. shredded my eardrums playing "Battle of Hampton Roads" at Musica in Akron, OH. Have worn basic, disposable ear plugs at every non-acoustic show since - it really makes a world of difference. Sound quality def takes a little hit, but it's not so bad compared to the alternative.
Edit: the last 8+ years of playing drums haven't particularly helped me out on this front either...

I don't have any hearing issues but should probably use ear plugs. Unfortunately whenever I do I just spend half the show taking them in and out to see how different it is.

How many shows have you seen? 984, not counting friend-rock.
What band(s) have you seen the most? disappears and the national, 15 times.
How much merch have you bought at shows? 78 CDs/cassettes/records since 1998, not sure about before then. plus, maybe 20 t-shirts and 25-30 posters.
How many beers have you bought at shows? zero.
Do you think you attend too many shows? This is probably not the community to seek support for if you do. there were a few years when i went to 100 shows. that was maybe too much. but i'm at 40-50 per year now, which seems ok.

I couldn't possibly quantify with any accuracy, but while I'm distracted by Joe Kennedy's lip gloss I'm gonna try.
Ages 10-14 I probably saw 1-3 shows per year (4-12) (representative shows: Bob Dylan, Harry Connick, Jr., Willie Nelson) Ages 15-18, maybe 5 (15) (Violent Femmes, REM, Blind Melon) 19-22, ten? (30) (Phish, Dave Matthews, Wilco, Jayhawks, Old 97s) 22-29, 7 (49) (Madonna, Dolly Parton, Supreme Beings of Leisure, Ryan Adams) 30-present 40-60 (440-660) So like anywhere between 538-766? I have no idea how to count festivals.
I have seen MMJ about 45 times, Pearl Jam about 30 times and Wilco/Jeff Tweedy about 50 times? Phish probably at least 35 times too.
I have bought some merch. I try not to buy shirts anymore unless they have lady cut which a lot of them are starting to now. Favorite newer purchases include a Phish hoodie that is super soft, Angel Olsen super long sweatshirt, and a lady cut Slowdive shirt.
I will buy a beer occasionally but definitely not every show or even most shows. At Snail Mail I drank a Tecate and it was delicious.
In 2017 I went to around 50 shows and 4-5 festivals and that seemed about right. There was a while where I was going to too many shows and it stopped being fun.

Always impressed with the number of times jam band people have seen specific jam bands. I've gotta ask, for those who have seen an artist 20+ times, is it still fun? When do the diminishing returns hit?

It's still fun as long as they're keeping the setlists fresh. That's part of the joy of seeing a multi-night run (which most of these bands do) knowing they won't repeat from night to night and figuring out which songs you haven't gotten yet and can expect (or hope for) the next night. And, for the songs that they jam out, it's never the same song twice.

I really love seeing bands many times. It really helps me to appreciate the musicianship of a really good band. Even just seeing a band twice in one tour can be eye-opening. I can't remember who it was--either Beach House or The National--but I saw them once at the very, very start of a new album cycle and then I saw them again at the very end of the cycle. The new songs had become massive due to being played so much.

I have tinnitus from attending rock concerts and rehearsing/performing at loud volumes all without using hearing protection until damage had been done. Like Xam, I notice it most when the house is quiet - I literally can't hear silence since there's always a few high-pitched tones in the background. Get a pair of Etymotics and get used to them. I had been using the regular size until a few years ago and they would fatigue my ear canals after a while. The smaller size (now marketed as "standard fit") feels much better and they are just as effective. Live music is not going to sound exactly like when you're not using earplugs, but the Etymotics are 100x better than the classic foam plugs which ruin music. I'll even use them for certain acoustic performances if the guitar is particularly bright. Link

How many shows have you seen? According to setlist.fm, Ive seen 307 concerts of 226 different artists (Not including local shows and such)
What band(s) have you seen the most? Band of Horses at 6 times, with quite a few just behind at 5
How much merch have you bought at shows? Posters... all the posters.. a bit of an addiction
How many beers have you bought at shows? too many
Do you think you attend too many shows? This is probably not the community to seek support for if you do. Not at all... Wish I could do more.. Life, work, and family have definitely slowed me down over the years. In my heyday I was travelling to either St. Louis or Chicago at least twice a month ( I live basically right in the middle of the 2 cities)

Inspired by reading about this dude on my commute this morning: How many shows have you seen? What band(s) have you seen the most? How much merch have you bought at shows? How many beers have you bought at shows? Do you think you attend too many shows? This is probably not the community to seek support for if you do. -not as many as most of this board, especially the last year and a half. the concert scene here mostly blows, so an act has to be tempting enough for me to make 90+ min drive to philly or slightly longer drive to new york. -guerilla toss, downtown boys, animal collective -outside of the odd record, i don't think I've bought any merchandise at a show for myself since I was 18. I bought a Whitney sweatshirt for my fiancee last year, but that was online after the show because they ran out of her size -usually 1 beer per show when I'm driving, 1 beer and 1 mixed drink if I'm not -no, I'd like to go to a lot more
