I would say it’s ok, but since that wasn’t an option I went with bad.

i went with bad, posted some of my reasoning herecan't remember if this Wesley Morris piece has been posted here before, but it gets at a lot of issues beyond the handling of race, which some people seem to think is the only reason the movie is getting flak

I read your comments and that other piece. I viewed this movie as a somewhat borderline dark comedy, not too unlike Fargo, but with less overt comedic beats. Frances McDormand's character was kind of my spirit animal (for when I'm feeling angry and feeling like burning bridges). I also considered that Sam Rockwell wasn't very deserving of redemption, but we let people off the racist hook constantly in our society. I don't really feel like that's an actual problem with this movie, but like... different perspectives/perceptions. Not everyone is going to draw the same feelings from the movie. I'm sure some people were absolutely disgusted by McDormand's character and her actions.
Also, any realism kinda went out the window (heh) when that replacement police chief witnessed Sam Rockwell's character throw a dude out a window for absolutely no reason. There's no fucking way he would just get fired. He would be behind bars awaiting trial. THEN AGAIN, maybe that itself was an allegory for how police in this country seem to get off clean after murdering unarmed people. Maybe that new chief's inaction is another allegory altogether. TL;DR I never really consciously took the events in this movie too seriously.

When I first left the theater I'd have called this 8/10, discussions and stuff have dropped it to a low 7/10. I still enjoy this movie - my problems are not with the perceived racism but with the pretty scattershot way the movie's broken up. In Bruges is a more concise film with the same basic nihilist undercurrent. If Three Billboards was a novel or even a stage play I could imagine reading it and accepting a lot of its broadness as meditative.

3 Billboards is good. To those who haven't seen it, avoid the trailer at all costs.
Sincerely,

easily moty for me but certainly willing to discuss it.
would like a repeat viewing sooner rather than later to give it a more critical eye.

can't believe so many people here approve of the police force's shoddy work.

i'm gonna be so bummed when rockwell beats dafoe I see your point, but Rockwell's a fine actor. This isn't gonna be like Costner beating Scorsese for Best Director that one year.

I voted bad.
I just was unhappy with the vague resolution. I find the "the audience will decide for themselves how this ends" to be really lazy film making.

The latest episode of Still Processing covered this film and pretty accurately summed up my thoughts.
