Reminder that we're still doing AotW over on the old board for two weeks.

A massive ransomware campaign appears to have infected a number of organisations around the world. Computers in thousands of locations have apparently been locked by a program that demands $300 (£230) in Bitcoin. There have been reports of infections in more than 70 countries, including the UK, US, China, Russia, Spain, Italy and Taiwan. Many security researchers are linking the incidents together. The UK's National Health Service (NHS) was also hit by a ransomware outbreak on the same day and screenshots of the WannaCry program were shared by NHS staff.

Oh man. just did some reading into that and its kind of bad. Lots of hospitals can't get into their systems right now which means they can't pull up medical records and things like that. Could have pretty bad consequences. That's really shitty

We visited some of Mrs. DoSo's relatives in Buffalo last month and one of them works at a hospital that was hit with ransomware. They didn't pay, but it effectively shut down some of their systems for two weeks. She works in Billing and ended up getting sent home from work because there was nothing to do.

LA Reid is out at Epic Records, apparently due to almost constant employee sexual harassment on his part. He shaped so many artists that I've listened to throughout my entire life, really sucks to hear this. I guess they're right when they say never meet your heroes. EDIT: This is probably a good entry for the I Don't Care thread which I just realized we don't have.

Not sure if anybody would be interested in this but it's a super cool app id like to pass around. Have a friend that worked on it and it's in beta right now and I have some invite codes.
The app is called StationHead and it's basically like a plug DJ app. You create your radio station and can broadcast live. Also has the option to talk between/during the songs and whenever you like. Basically it's your personal radio show. There's also a chat room to interact with people listening to your station. The coolest thing is that it's connected through Spotify so if you have 6 people listening to your station, that song gets 6 streams so it's great for up and coming bands.
Think it's going live in about a month but like I said I have some invite codes to send out right now so shoot me a message if anyone wants to try it out

Pretty certain I've developed tinnitus. I've felt like I've had it mild for a while but after a long string of concerts over the past few weeks (two of which were incredibly loud) it's been much worse than ever before the past few days.
I'm really really stupid for not wearing earplugs more often to shows. really really stupid. This was a preventable thing. I'm not sure it's a fixable thing.

It's not fixable at the moment, but they supposedly keep having breakthroughs that might eventually lead to a treatment.
Start wearing earplugs now to just about every show. I've found that it even helps sometimes with acoustic shows, since they can be mixed badly at times. It's always going to be there, but you can at least keep it from getting worse.

I was going to say, invest in some good earplugs so it doesn't get any worse.

I've started wearing earplugs to every show, too. I don't know that I have tinnitus, but I do get pretty serious ringing for longer stretches than I'd like. Those seem to have decreased some since I've started wearing the earplugs.

www.getdubs.com/Get these. I get a clear sound when I wear these at shows - they've saved me from the terrible follow-up ringing the next morning after a show.

I find these to be more comfortable than than the Etymotic ones. These are easier to clean, too. I use them on longer flights, too.

I can't recommend earplugs enough. I didn't wear them for decades and now I have lost about 80% of my hearing in my right ear and about 40% in the left. Don't be me.*
*This applies to lots of things not just earplugs.

I've been using Etymotics for at least 10 years and I'm very happy with them, but for $20 I will definitely give the Dubs a try.
I switched to a smaller size Etymotic a couple of years ago and find them to be more comfortable than the old larger size I was using. But they do still have the tendency to sometimes feels itchy after 60-90 minutes.
I'll also second scoots' suggestion about wearing earplugs even for acoustic concerts. If the volume is high, the extremely high pitches from acoustic guitar strings can be pretty painful. I'm not officially diagnosed, but it's likely I've had tinnitus since high school or college. There's a constant high-pitched ringing that I've just learned to live with, but I'd certainly wear earplugs when attending show and performing if I could do it all over again.

I've used these for close to 20 years now, and really don't have problems with them. Especially nice that they're disposable and you don't have to bother with washing them. You can buy a big box from amazon for like $20

I'm the resident Etymotic spokesperson here, nothing but good things to say about them, though I can attest to a little irritation near the end of a long show. Haven't tried Dubs yet.
Going off of DoSo's point, and my continuing irritation with the Royal Oak Music Theatre, they had The Tallest Man on Earth mixed so painfully loud, that having forgotten my earplugs, I elected to listen to the set from the lobby. I'm still amazed/infuriated by that.
Also, any venue that doesn't offer to sell at least cheap foam ones at the bar is a disgrace.

It's cool to hear that Etymotics offer the smaller size. Ashley's been in the market for a new pair, and I think that'll do it. I might even pick up a pair of that size for myself cuz the ones I have are almost painful on occasion.

Most venues in Denver will give them to you for free if you ask a bartender. I've forgotten my Dubs a few times and had to rely on the cheap ones, and they work fine. Sound is a bit iffy, but they do the job.

NEW YORK (AP) -- A law enforcement official says a car that plowed into a crowd of pedestrians in Times Square killed one person and injured about 20 others. The official told The Associated Press that the driver was taken into custody after the Thursday lunchtime crash and is being tested for alcohol. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.
saying it was a "habitual drunk driver in his twenties"....

Dubs are cool but you can easily lose them. I've stuck to the Etymotics just for the string.
