This is so interesting and such slow reading. It is a great book, one of my favorites. But, yeah, sometimes he gets too detailed and it slows down. Gotten to the part where you learn the proper way to eat Cap'n Crunch cereal?

Heh, apparently not. Waterhouse just met with the Duke of Qwghlm, and Randy arrived on Kinakuta.

I have decided to embark on a reading project: I am going to read a biography of each President in chronological order. This will certainly take a few years but I have plenty free time right now. The only break will be for one of my fantasy novels here and there.
Here are my criteria: (1) As much as possible, I want an author with a neutral view point; (2) single volume biographies with the possible exception of Edmund Morris' Teddy Roosevelt books and Robert Caro's LBJ series (since I have already read three of them); (3) I will try to find highly rated/reviewed books with an emphasis on more recently published ones (because of the greater access to original sources that are available today) and (4) none of those "know your president" or type series for the "lesser" Presidents - real biographies even if it means digging into the rare book bin. Number (1) means I will probably end with Ford or thereabouts because almost anything on the more recent presidents is going to be loaded with partisan baggage. Anyway, maybe fun?

Sounds fun. I'm going in the opposite direction and trying to read memoirs/books by current politicians.
Just bought Ben Sasse's new book and just finished John Kasich's.

A brewery near my house just announced a monthly book club - first up is American Gods for June. Really good idea for a brewery (particularly this one, since it is appropriately called Fiction Brewing) to branch out beyond trivia and typical bar events. I've been meaning to read this book, anyway.

Been reading Meet Me in the Bathroom, I'm enjoying it. There's a lot of people interviewed and it can be annoying to keep track and go back every 30 seconds to the beginning of the boom to look people up.

Just bought that last night. I'm really looking forward to reading it, but yeah I agree that oral histories can be super annoying to read.

I'm about 200 pages through American Gods after about a week. I may make it to this book club thing after all!

I think I've only read fictional oral histories, but I've loved those.

I loved Please Kill Me and am pretty excited for Meet Me in the Bathroom. Didn't realize it was out already.

It is extremely good. I got about a third of the way through it last night and can't wait to finish it.

I'm listening to Remains of the Day as an audiobook and it rules but the narrator's voice for Ms Kenton sounds like Mrs Doubtfire

I started reading Prelude to Bruise by Saeed Jones. It's really rather beautiful though I'm not typically a huge fan of poetry. Some serious gut punches in there

Really quick read -- the first time I can remember finishing an entire novel in one sitting -- but super interesting. If "coming-of-age story in first-person narrative by a psychotic teenager conducting arcane rituals around a rural Scottish island" is a genre, I want to read more of it.

Might have to read that in full.

I just started Peter Hook's history of New Order book: Substance: Inside New Order. Not real far into it, but man is he disgruntled/bitter/pissed off at them. Should be interesting when it gets to the point that things start falling apart.
One of the cool things is it contains a history of their live dates, along with set lists, and sometimes, commentary from Hooky.

The Hooky Joy Division book was great so I do plan on reading the New Order one when I see it turn up in a bargain bin.
The endearing thing about Hooky is that he's kind of transparent about being loathsome, which kind of gets you on his side.
