Ugh what.
Because that's what everyone has loved about the Joker for the past decade, his origin.

The Netflix Death Note was very bad. Sometimes in expected ways and other times in baffling ones. Like, the cast is bad. Even Willem Dafoe is wasted as Ryuuk is barely a presence and also way more of an asshole than his OG counterpart. Everyone and everything being white is bad. The dude is still named 'Light' and no one at any point points this out or makes fun of him for being named Light. It is less about detective cat-and-mousery and more about angsty teens murdering people in gruesome Final Destination ways - definitely not at all what the original manga was about. The last two songs that play - over a climactic, overdramatic setpiece and then the credits - are by Chicago and Air Supply. There is kind of a blooper reel.

A ton of fun. Sion Sono is my favorite Japanese live-action director at this point.

Saw three movies this weekend. Wonder Woman (finally), Good Time, and Wind River. I enjoyed all three of them to varying degrees. I can't say anything about WW that hasn't been touched on, I just wanna say that I'm interested in a movie that isn't an origin story for her. Good Time was fantastic, I thought. It was incredibly tense, and I enjoyed each step of the film, and each difficulty that arose throughout. Robert Pattinson was, dare I say, amazing, and I hope he gets an Oscar nomination. I just got out of Wind River a little while ago and while it was hard to watch, it was very well edited and put together. I loved the story, and I was happy that we didn't have characters over explaining grief to the audience. There's a lot that was better left unsaid, and it worked in its favor.
All in all, great weekend for movies! Probably need to register for MoviePass

I told my friend I watched it and his first response was, 'I heard Nat Wolff has a weird yell or something?' So its reputation is growing.

heh
yeah it was pretty terrible, i thought, even if someone hadn't seen the original series or the japanese movie.
but i've said to a few people who haven't seen either and they already told me they thought it was fine or even decent.
soooo fuck if i know anymore. i hated it tho.

We saw Patti Cake$ on Saturday. It was good, but in retrospect, I didn't need to see it in the theater.

I took my kids to see the Emoji Movie because they've wanted to see it for a while. It was even worse than I imagined. And I only got in a 5 minute or so nap, so that didn't even save me from it.

Saw It Comes At Night and it wasn't at all what I had expected. Maybe that's why it's a good film?
Any movie that makes you think long after viewing is good in my book.

Pulled center of 3rd row for the NYFF world premiere of Linklater's new film Last Flag Flying and had a 25% discount so went for it. Also got a ticket for a Japanese film showing at the festival because I'm me.

I'm going to see It tonight, and I want it to be really scary, but I also know that if it is really scary, then I will not be able to sleep tonight.
Also, I want to see Beach Rats again because it is awesome.

Wow, is It really getting good reviews? I've never seen the original or read the book but the trailer for the new one looked awful.
