Palm Springs was awesome. How has it not yet been mentioned in here? 🤔 this was fine. i don't recall one of these time loop movies having multiple characters all experiencing it. so that was a fresh take. the movie led to a strangely long discussion in my home about how we would handle such a scenario. we were hung up on whether or not you always wake up refreshed like you slept a full night.

was not expecting to wake up to Bond hot takes but hey
y'all should watch 'em cause they're generally very good films sans a few stinkers and also the Connery character doesn't really hold up in a modern context but then again neither does Connery (like, at all. the character is much more decent than he is.) most of the Moore ones are lighthearted good fun and the Connery ones are at least made very well and considered "classics." i dont think most of the Brosnan movies have aged well on a technical or writing aspect but the man himself has always looked and sounded the most like a novelized British spy. Craig is a badass and the most fun to watch and least sexist pig of any of them and as has been discussed ad nauseam, Skyfall is a legit work of art.
kinda been meaning to give Lazenby and Dalton another shot but then again, eh.
did these all get moved to HBO Max or something? looks like they're not on Prime anymore.

Lazenby is just OK as Bond but OHMSS is probably an upper half entry

I didn't want to see Palm Springs but now I see Connor O'Malley is in it he's in like two scenes for probably less than 90 seconds total. it's a fun movie, but if that's your hook you can probably skip it.

Also I watched Batman Returns last night and it ages poorly as a Batman movie but extremely well as a fever dream comedy. I long for the days when Danny DeVito planning to annihilate a city with an army of rocket-equipped penguins was considered ‘too dark.’

You Only Live Twice - it was hard to stay invested in this one. Not even the autogyro scene kept me engaged and I think its bc the formula is just so watered down by this point. Thing is, the novel is nothing like this save for a few bits. It takes place almost entirely in Japan which is odd for a Bond film. I do feel the intent was to honor and champion Japanese culture and not do pathetic stereotyping which seemed well accomplished.
Blofeld is a joke. Not sure why there's so much fanfare for this guy. Donald Plesance is always great but the character is flat. Did nothing for me.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service - so yeah this one sucks. So much wrong with it, and only a little bit of it right.
Pros:
- the last 2 minutes of the movie - the ski chase and the bobsled chases aren't bad - Terry Savalas as Blofeld
Cons:
- many inconsistencies (Bond meets Blofeld for the first time in the last movie but here he doesnt recognize him when he unconvincingly impersonates Bray) - terrible fight scenes. The film is sped up giving it a cartoonish feel - far too little action - Unbelievable relationship between Bond and Tracy. - idiotic and insulting storyline. in the span of less than a week Bond meets Tracy, then her crime boss father, montage of them falling in love and doing a bunch of cutesy couple things, dad gives him clues which leads to a search for Blofeld, meeting the 12 Angels, bedding two of them (despite being in love with Tracy), foiling the plans of Blofeld once, then surviving an avalanche, tracy gets abducted after he proposes, he and dad in law team up, foil Blofeld again, and finally get married (where everyone from MI6 shows up but not as the wedding party. Nope. Bonds groomsmen are a bunch of randos who just so happened to be available for this impromptu wedding they is somehow perfectly planned). How do I know the time frame? Well.....early in the film her dad mentions his birthday is next week and at the end he says "be sure to come back next week for my birthday."
Big mess of a film. Lazenby is not a good Bond. This movie had the balls to end on a downer which I dont think has happened elsewhere in the series. But it's long and has too far of gaps between action. When there is action it's the sped up fist fights where Bond has some leaping uppercut ala Street Fighter. Truly terrible stuff. Also both Bond and her father abuse Tracy. Bond slaps her around in their hotel room and her own father punches her in the face to knock her out.
Sucks.

Diamonds Are Forever - ummmmm I dunno. The concept wasn't terrible. Tiffany Case for 3/4 of the movie is one of the better Bond girl portrayals, then the formula sets in. Did not know Plenty O'Toole was A.) Natalie Woods younger sister Lana and B.) In it so little despite having such a memorable name. Her bit part was kinda funny too. Connery is just as bland as he was in You Only Live Twice.
There's no mention of Tracy or the wedding from OHMSS, and the Blofeld fake outs were obvious. funny to see a young Sid Haig tho! Speaking of funny, this one tries to be, and rarely is. Its goofy humor. The whole franchise is parodying itself and you can tell that the writing is getting lazy while the action gets more absurd.
Still, it's not a total waste of a movie. Better than the last few.

And thus concludes the canonical Connery years. We now move into Moore absurd territory.

Live and Let Die - it's been some time since I saw this one, and it's surprisingly better than I remembered. Solitaire isn't the most interesting Bond girl, but its Jane Seymour and she's always a delight. When playing Goldeneye back in the day my friends and I assumed Baron Samedi was a big time villain in the series. He's not. Dispatched pretty easily.
I've always liked Yaphet Kotto since I saw him in Alien, but he gets the short end here. He's barely in it, first of all, compared to other villains, and secondly he has the worst death in Bond history. He gives it his all tho and when he is on screen he's great. I like that the story isn't about world domination again, and while the stereotypes are all over the places its nice to see a POC as the majority.
It's not without its faults tho. JW Pepper is the dumbest and most pointless Bond character ever. All of his scenes could use been deleted. Moore is okay here as Bond, he definitely looks the part but he's sluggish when it comes to the fighting. The plot I'd fairly convoluted, and the boat chase is way too long. But for the most part this is standard Bond for better or worse and it does feel like an improvement on the last few. Plus the song is great.
