I know the Landis segment is technically more criminal but the Spielberg segment of the Twilight Zone movie are the worst 20 minutes I've ever seen in a movie.

revisited Insidious for the first time in years and that movie still scares the hell out of me. everything about it just so good. crazy to look at reviews from the time that weren't into it at all.
and i really enjoyed Shirley. not an amazing movie on its own but Moss' performance is absolutely stellar and elevates everyone and everything around her. would watch another 2 hours of just her cursing up a storm.

Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble is on. Seems like a ton of titles are out of stock online already so I'm considering masking up and running through quick

Sucks that Beau Travail is not on sale Should be in the October flash sale. Of note, I think at Barnes and Noble they'll let you pre-order the item and pay in advance to get the discount. They at least used to, but they've changed policy like a dozen times since then.

Yeah I'm planning to mask up and hit up the store this afternoon.
Considering getting the Bruce Lee set online tho so I don't have to go back for it.

What did you think? This one didn’t hit as hard as Playtime for me

What did you think? This one didn’t hit as hard as Playtime for me It reminded me if Jacques Tati played The Sims and decided to make a movie about his Sim universe. The whole movie is like those ‘antique’ post cards you see in shops and just puts a smile on your face. In a time where we can’t enjoy going to the beach, it’s nice to see what 1950s summertime looked like in France. 3.5/5 stars

The Beach House was aight. really good first half of uneasy tension. second half has some good body horror and imagery but i feel like the budget stopped it from really getting to do anything fun for the finale.

Everyone else is doing it, so I figured I'd try it myself. I doubt I'll finish, and not sure how many of the one's I've seen I really want to revisit but we'll start from the beginning. Dreading the Roger Moore era.
James Bond films
Dr. No - First time viewing this one actually. The only Connery film up to this point that I've seen is Goldfigner and it was a long time ago. Considering this one has the second highest Rotten Tomatoes score, I expected...more? It's by no means a terrible entry in the series, and being the first I expected it to be a little messy. The action sequences are solid for the time, and Connery was born for this role. It's not very timely though in it's treatment of people of color or women. The villain is less than spectacular and dispatched way too easy, but he's kind of a feeble old man anyway so I shouldn't have been surprised. Total women bedded by Bond in this one is 3, with all of them being white, but one portraying an Asian woman which was I guess of the times but still sad. I mean it's no Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's but it's still sad. Also interesting that the classic Bond theme plays so often in this - like almost every time he enters the room. It still has it's moments though, even if it's outdated.

It still has it's moments though, even if it's outdated. Official Ranking 1. Dr. No By some magical twist of fate, I was able to watch two movies in one day. From Russia With Love - this is the 2nd in the series and second by Terence Young. Bigger production value. Bigger action and set pieces. First glimpse of Blofeld. And of course, the always wonderful Robert Shaw pre-A Man for All Seasons. Everything I've seen Shaw in has been fantastic, its truly a tragedy that he passed relatively young (51). Jaws, the Sting, and even the Deep are worth a viewing simply for him. As much as he steals the show here, he's in it far too little. But this is definitely a huge step up imo from Dr. No. A better villain that measures up to Bond in Red Grant. But its not perfect. Bond surprisingly only beds one woman in this, Daniela Bianchi as Tatiana Romanov. Despite being "in love" with her, resorts to slapping her around (because that's what real men do) when she doesn't give him what he wants. A more intricate narrative but slightly anticlimactic with the hotel room fight and then ending. Connery is more invested in the role here and several silly aspects from Dr. No are refined here thus making it a flawed formula but overall better film to me. But JFC is Ian Fleming a douche. Edit: forgot to mention seeing a young Desmond LlLlewyn was great. Kinda tall. Bond Rankings 1. From Russia With Love 2. Dr. No

From Russia With Love is my favorite.
A 007 binge is very ambitious, considering I think more than half of them are genuinely bad movies lol

Don't let this excite you, but I somehow managed a third film today. I don't anticipate this continuing but I'm gonna bask in the glory as long as I can.
Goldfinger - the quintessential Bond film. The laser scene that was iconically parodied in the Simpsons, the gold painted Jill Masterson, the gadgets, the Galore, and let's not forget everyone's go-to Goldeneye character on N64 multiplayer choice - Oddjob.
What did Fleming have against or for Asians? I haven't read the novels, far too misogynistic, but this film has Asian women as subordinates for Goldfinger and Oddjob is Korean. Let's also not forgot Nick Nack from the Man With the Golden Gun (look more gold). While I'm glad there's representation without stereotyping, it's odd to see so many Asians as henchman. 2 women presumably bedded, with a slight remorse for the Gold Girl, but Galores no pushover or even a poorly written character compared to say.... Solitaire in Live and Let Die.
Its necessary viewing to get the Bond experience. Bigger budget with better and more fast paced action. In fact the narrative pace is increased tenfold. We meet the villain early on, which makes for a fun game of golf. Its aged exceptionally well despite its shortcomings. I believe in the novel though the depressurization scene is more gruesome a la the hybrid hot dog stream in Alien Resurrection.
Still, it's a damn good Bond film for a multitude of reasons. Well crafted, well paced, memorable, and definitely the best so far.
1. Goldfinger 2. From Russia With Love 3. Dr. No
Next up, Thunderball.

The Spy Who Loved Me also isn't bad. But yeah, Moonraker and A View To A Kill are woof.

Thunderball was good but kind of a letdown after Goldfinger. The climax is very absurd and incoherent at times bc of how many stooges are engaged the underwater fight. Lots of explosions. Lots of action. Like...a lot. More than the previous films almost combined.
The formula, while still working, is getting old and the characters are still fun to watch but its definitely losing steam by this one. Sounds weird to say this but it's a good thing to change out the actor for this role every 4 films or so. I'm also glad they ditched the Spectre storyline later on the series bc it feels like there is no actual threat. These guys get dispatched easily and they repeatedly lose. Doesn't make them a formidable adversary in my eyes.

lol no I admit it's weird. Just never something that occurred to me until recently. Goldeneye was my favorite game as a kid, so I have no idea why I never sat down and actually watched that movie at least.
